VW 1.9L TDI engine - NO ELECTRONICS

TDI engine project build running by its lonesome, diesel and air only. 12 volt source just to get it started. It eventually will be going in a Toyota trail rig build.

The previous iteration of this engine the TD (no i) was particularly bomb proof. I had one in a Passat, I only filled up once a month, like this one it had no electronics at all. You could pressure wash the engine bay whilst it was running and it wouldn't stop.

A dinosaur engines, one of the best diesel ever made by VW, there are really popular here in EU, a lot of people still have them even it turned over 400.000 kms. Skoda (one of the concern's makes) sold them with 66kw and 81kw, finally 96kw this one already have PD injectors. still doing service. I would assume the one shown would have 74kw or even 66kw if it's from golf. Super cheap parts, really reliable engine with low consumption!!! my 1.9 TDi 77kw 2006 Octavia II. and my wife's 2.0 TDi 103 kw facelifted octavia II 2009 we curently drive could not be ever compared, both complicated PDs injectors....full of electronic devices such a pain...miss my old octavia 2002 I. 81kw!!! or golf IV 2001 74kw

Indeed. Stepping down two cylinders from a AKE 2.5 TDI (also a decently reliable engine) to this as my winter daily. A buddy drove his 1.9 TDI past 600k kilometers just recently, it even seem to have retained most if not all the horses too.

The 96kW doesn't have PD injectors and the 1.9 TDi 74kW is a PD. Only engines with the simple fuel pump were 66kW, 81kW and 96kW

Best engine 1.9TDI 90hp, till now 2.5 milion kilometers in 20 years. No big problems, regular oil change and time belt. Only bad spots are: electro magnetic ventil on bosh pump(fixed by direct connecting wire on ventil from light position) and intercooler pipe always blow(fixed with duck type).

I know this is an old video but for anyone wanting to make a similar modification you can get a fully mechanical p-pump from an older rabbit or golf 1.6 and it will practically bolt right in to where the 1.9 pump sits and I believe uses the same cam belt gear but could be wrong. The only thing that you have to look out for is injector / pump tuning. Ideally you'd use the 1.6 injectors to start off with to make sure the conversion works as they will match how the pump is tuned, but could go back to the 1.9 or bigger aftermarket injectors that way you can lower the overall duration of the injector fire, and therefore you can reduce egts and up the power, but that is if you are trying to really tune it to how it should be, a 1.6 pump and injectors will make this 1.9 a dog but usable, but there is a plethora of modifications you can do to tune the pump with bigger injectors. Buying an old pump is risky, but an old pump can almost always be rebuilt and retuned, as long as there is a parts market, or you can learn to resource and reuse old parts, but that requires having a good amount of space for an abundance of good and bad parts to salvage from, which can turn into a cluster-phobic headache or an eyesore for most who don't see the value.

Do you guys have a part number for the VE pump? I’m looking to do the same for a build I’m doing. Also How does the pump know to deliver more fuel with it being turbo? Does the VE pump have a boost refrence take off?

How did you set the initial timing for the fuel injection pump before the engine timing belt was installed

  • @bisket2003

I don't exactly remember... I did have to buy a timing tool for the injection pump. But there are timing marks on both the injection pump and the engine.

Thanks for taking time to make this video. I have a question for you, if you can please answer, just your thoughts. I have an engine 1.9SDI, mounted on a Skoda fabia, 2004. I want to use this engine on a mobile saw mill, unfortunately the injection pump it is electronic controled. After several days of fails I manage to start the engine and accelerate it up to about 1200RPM with the electronic pump, just by opening the pump and making some changes. If I buy a Injection pump from, 1996 , same engine but with TDI, the pump is mechnical, can I install it on this engine? it will work?? I am not concerned about lossing few HP, but it needs to run shooth . Just let me know what you think. I contacted several companies experts in Injection pumps and they told me they have lotd of work and they dont play with this stuff Thanks again

The electrical system on the ALH can be made to stand alone using the stock injection pump and ECU. The ECU does need to be re-flashed though. The ALH never came with a mechanical pump as far as I know... You're probably referring to the 1.9L AAZ. I have no idea how different that platform is...
