    Saved me!!!!! after trying to do it by the book and broke the cheap "tool" working on the right side exhaust cam. The tool set seems to be more for DIY uncertainty. The main thing on doing this job is to MARK EVERYTHING even the things that don't seem to matter and probably usually don't. It will at least make you feel better. For mine there did seem to be a difference in the phaser bolts(I didn't mark them but did remember which one I put where). Had trouble getting one started and tried the other bolt, the one that came out of that side, and it almost threaded itself. For those saying the right bank is the hardest I would have to agree when it comes to my Grand Caravan simply because you(and especially "I") can't see and to do so requires at least 4 hands to hold the flashlight, mirror, tools, and the phaser. Even with my 60 year old arthritic hands I somehow managed. Using a short piece of 1/2" PVC pipe in the phaser hole made handling it and lining it up much easier. It would help having someone around holding the wrench on the cam while breaking loose and torquing the phaser bolts. I used a ratchet strap connect to an opposite side cam to hold the wrench while breaking loose and a short piece of 1x2 lumber under it while torquing. For those of you that haven't started on your FWD a 36mm combination wrench would come in handy for the phaser bolts after breaking them loose and before torquing as space, especially on the right bank, is limited. Go ahead and move the power steering reservoir out of the way too so you don't risk breaking it while torquing. Now if you could save me from having to buy a new left side exhaust cam! There wasn't a worrisome amount of noise and I didn't drive much after it started but 2 rollers were completely shot, no sign of needle bearings anywhere, and those two lobes were about 20% more narrow than they should be. One was no longer egg shaped unless you consider snapping turtle eggs. You should call this video Don't Panic If The Tools Don't Fit And/Or Break. Thanks for the great video and tips! KZread wasn't around when I had to deal with the same type locking tensioner on a 1977 Ford Courier with a 1.8 Mitsubishi overhead cam

    I dunno who you are outside of these videos but I wish I did. I’d hire you in second if I could. As a technician turned team leader turned foreman who’s been doing this for over 20 years now, my rule has always been that flat rating a job is perfectly acceptable so long as it absolutely does NOT compromise the integrity or longevity of the repair or vehicle in any way. Also it absolutely CANNOT cost the customer more money then if the repair was done strictly by the book. If you take a shortcut and break something then that’s on you not the customer. Additionally all other consumables, seals, liquids, and fasteners that are required to be replaced and or torqued per the manufacturer must still be done. From many of your videos I’ve watched it sounds like you have a lot of the same beliefs in proper automotive repair. Much respect!

    JT, you gave me the confidence to tackle this. Order four cams and 48 piece rocker and lifer set, intake and valvetrain cover gasket set, chain tool and paint pen all under $1,400 bucks ! All OEM. I drove 3 k miles with the bad tick and not willing to push my luck. Even dealer service guy pulled me aside when I had a headrest recall done. He said “off the record, that can cause catastrophic failure at any time”. Maybe I’ll get lucky and will find one or two serviceable cams and can return what I don’t open.

    Got bank 1 today. bit of a struggle getting the slack to put the intake phaser on after doing the exhaust camshaft but I kept jiggling the shafts and had to haul up on the phaser to get the oil control bolt all the way in! I used the special tool but it didn't give me all the slack I needed without shifting the cams back and forth I wouldn't have got it and did it the way you did it and it worked in your other video with the special tool! Second time I tried the right bank, last week I was afraid to take the chain off one of the phasers and let it lay. After this video I figure I should be able to get it with the special tool today cause last week I seen that by shifting the camshaft(intake) provided slack in the chain with the tool in place. I have a 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan. The actuators were in a tight spot along with the intake oil control bolt with the silver cylinder in the way of the wrench, I need a new breaker bar lol. Everything pretty tight in this vehicle, I'd image it's the same with the others. Bank 1 your doing some blind wrenching, feel for this and that 2015 dodge grand caravan. Have a good one. Cal

    I need help, man. I pulled and replaced all my rockers myself, no problem. Drives fine for a while, then rattles again. Then I pulled and replaced all my lifters. Drives fine. I finally found some camshafts to replace my nasty ones, so I pulled and replaced the right bank exhaust camshaft. Put it back together and it wouldn't start. I messed up the timing, so I opened it up and lined it back up. Great. Starts and drives fine. Time for the intake camshaft and here's my problem. I'm at the finish line. Got the intake camshaft in and I'm at top dead center with the crankshaft. My phasers are perfectly lined up with the dark timing chain links, exactly the same as the left bank. My cams are all at top center. I put it all back together and try to start it. Clunk clunk dead. Won't start. Any advice on what to check would be great. Appreciate it.

    I have seen other mechanics take the cam sensors off the valve covers before removing the valve cover. That may help with removing the valve cover. Make sure to replace cam sensors back to the same cam phaser. I haven't heard of cam phasers malfunctioning, but I do know that material can get stuck inside the cam phaser and that you could clean it out instead of replacing with new cam phasers. Also, I didn't see you use any tool to depress the tensioner, but I didn't understand how you still had all that slack. Must not matter so much, but correct me JT.

    Awesome video. Can you explain about how to time a 2010 Mazda CX-9 3.7 duratec engine. How would you verify the engine is in TDC on the compression stroke other than relying on the timing marks?

  • @garyr7027

    @garyr7027

    Жыл бұрын

    One simple way of verifying any engine TDC on number 1 cylinder. Remove all the plugs except for number 1 cylinder. Rotate the crank shaft by hand while looking at the timing marks. Once you feel the compression on that cylinder you know it's close to TDC, then simply line up the timing marks, as by then you're right there at TDC. It works every time, can't go wrong as long as the crank shaft timing marks are there.

    Ford tech here. the dowel for the crank gear should be pointing at 12 oclock. that will be close enough and when you put the chain on just use the colored links to match up the dots on the cams and crank gear and you will be fine. cant mess it up that way. just make sure to crank the crank pulley down tight or you will have trouble later

    lol, no witch craft sir. Thats why i just let the camera roll and did not chop up any part of that clip. So you can see that it do not take a lot of slack at all to put them on. Its all in the positioning of that camshaft that you turning with the wrench an slightly lifting up on the chain/phaser to create even more slack.

All other cam lobes look fine on left head. Have not looked right head yet but engine ran like it had 1 cyl dropping out. Question is - why did both these only lobes wear away? Was there a blockage of oil supply or thats just the way they fail?? Also, how do you know that the phasers are bad on the engines you service?? If you're replacing the right bank 1 side valve train, is it necessary to remove the left bank 2 valve cover? I have heard to remove both side valve covers, even if working on only one side, but is it for ensuring that all four phasers/cams are aligned perfectly? Or can I just remove right valve cover? Thanks.

    @@OnlineMechanicTips so long as you know a trick then go for it. I discovered a short cut to my 4.6 timing chain without locking the cams down by rotating the crank a few degrees off from TDC that lowers all the pistons down far enough so no valve will interfere. A little tougher to line marks up but still doable when double checked. Once timed up then it's good to rotate. In fact I got that method straight from a Ford repair manual timing section... trick to the trade.
