Spider-Man: Homecoming was a ton of fun and the biggest fun surprise comes from the film's villain, Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes. And sure Toomes is something like his comic counterpart but the MCU version is also very different from comic Vulture. In this video, I take a look at five comic characters that in one way or another influenced the MCU's take on Vulture.

I’ll say it again, as long as the difference isn’t negative or terrible, comic accuracy doesn’t matter. The beauty of comics is that different people can put different twists on characters. If it’s an interesting character, it doesn’t matter.

Yeah, a lot of characters that are comic staples in team ups, can't really carry any sort of idealogical or emotional conflict for a feature film, so they get a nice overhaul. Vulture is a classic character, but he's never really had a massive story where he's central.

What I like about the the most recent MCU villains are that they are mostly slight re-imaginings of classic characters often for the better and can be mish-mashes of other characters, that allow us to find them likable and sometimes to be understandable as well, to a point that we could see ourselves sympathise with them and understand their motifs in some way, like Vulture, Mysterio, Ghost, Hela, Loki, Killmonger, Baron Zemo, Ego, and of course Thanos, not to mention most recently Agatha Harkness, who is quite fun.

Luke also collapses an entire hotel on Spider-Man and Spider-Man kinda does the If This Be My Destiny thing again. The thing is, in the comics, you don't really need really complex or deep or even layered villians all the time. The rogues in those days were usually only around for an issue or two at a time (not including arc villains), who only have to be an obstacle for the hero temporarily. But when you adapt them for a movie, especially since audiences want them more complex now, you have to go around and find several smaller character that have interesting peices, and throw them together to try and make a sing, but sometime more than a single, character that is multi-layered and interesting enough.

One of the things I love about the MCU, is that it's all very much based on the Marvel comics, but none of it is completely based one *one* comic. And the villains all seem like a slightly main-streamified version of someone who could very well come from the comics while not just being a character directly from the comics. I feel like MCU respects the source material while being different enough to make it interesting.

  • @tomtudorweaver1078

I think it's interesting to examine the MCU's depictions of Spider-Man villains since Vulture really only carries over one main aspect from the comic character, that being he's a guy who's driven due to those above him taking away his work, and even then in a very different manner. On the other hand there's Mysterio who unlike Vulture has most of his core characteristics carried over and fleshed out more, except Vulture's motive is fundamentally the same as the comics, whereas that's the biggest change they made with Mysterio, it wasn't just that he failed in other fields it was more about a lack of influence and attention. Vulture presented us with the most human villain in the MCU yet, and Mysterio was an incredibly smart but also petty individual who was a far worse human being than Adrian Toomes, but that I feel worked to emphasize the contrast between his 'cool hero' persona. Still in my book they're my two favourite Spider-Man film villains, Vulture objectively is a better character but Mysterio blew me away for how well they adapted probably my favourite villain from the comics. Here's to hoping we see both of them make a return at some point.

You're right, Vulture isn't Vulture...thank goodness. I've been reading Spidey comics, watching cartoons etc. since I was a kid and not ONCE did I care about Vulture (until Homecoming.) Old baldy was a boring character and chances are if he was in the issue/episode it was a filler episode - or it was a Sinister Six story and he was just there to soak up Spidey punches. Michael Keaton's version is my favorite comic book villain ever!

Not sure if you know this, but the purpose of the Ultimate Universe imprint was to try and see, in the wake of the leather clad X-men movie debut, if Marvel could reimagine the comic universe in the more grounded and “gritty” way that could possibly one day translate well to Hollywood films. Ultimately, this was a success and even led to much of the early MCU being based on the Ultimate comics imprint. Things like Sam Jackson Fury, the Triskelion, militarized Carol Danvers, several of Captain America’s early and more painfully nationalist traits, Iron Man’s early armors and how they were assembled, Hawkeye’s early appearance and attitude, the idea of Thor being a mental patient, Ned Leeds whose name comes from 616 but he is clearly Ganke Lee from the Ultimate comics, and much much more.

It is interesting, that they probably worked backwards. They clearly wanted a Green Goblin. They probably even built a lot of movie around having Goblin. The fact that Vulture harness is almost autonomous is a dead giveaway, as no other flying villain can separate themselves from what makes them fly (as in wings of Vulture and Beetle are integral part of the costume while Goblin's glider is not). And then they either realized that we probably won't be happy with second Goblin in 2 years and found another green aerial villain to fit in. And what a fit it is. To the point of having an obscure Vulture II. Blakie Drago stole OG's equipment and was a Vulture himself for a time, until the original came to take the mantle back. Almost like certain other colorful character

I always loved the Prowler! The Tinkerer is a villain I didn't know I needed. I remember that New Mutants issue, #86 as it's the book before the first appearance of Cable... That issue where Spiderman does the Hulk Hogan...I gotta do this for all the little Spidermaniacs, starts shaking and rises above the situation... I always hated about Spidey... How his stories seemed like an old school WWE wrestling match. How he would be losing a fight, being beaten to an inch of his life. Then with only one page left, he'd think of Aunt May and get a lucky shot and win the day. I always had to listen to a friend of mine growing up who collected Spiderman comics how Spiderman beat Firelord, or how he beat Iron Man 2020.... while my favorite characters like Iron Man or The Prowler would constantly get beaten in there on book Sorry... had a PTMCD (Post tramatic Marvel Comics disorder) flashback.

I really dig the idea of the Vulture functioning as the Marvel equivalent of Captain Cold in the film universe. Green Goblin almost has to be "Dennis Hopper/Blue Velvet" level unhinged, but Vulture as the guy forced to live off the scraps (hence the name) in a brave new world is a cool take

Legit from the moment I saw in the trailer of Vulture's wings detaching & knocking the pillars over I was like, "That's the Goblin Glider. That is a secondary airborne threat that Peter is largely unaware of while he is distracted by the villain. Vulture's wings have NEVER been a detachable unit like that, that has only ever been an aspect of Spider-Man vs Green Goblin fights."
