Vulnerable Narcissism vs Grandiose or Malignant | DIANA DIAMOND

Pathological narcissism has multiple faces and presentations, but according to Diana Diamond they all share an inability to regulate normal narcissistic needs, and this causes distortions in personality.
Three variants of narcissistic pathology are high-functioning (grandiose), vulnerable & malignant. Diamond explains the difference between them in terms of level of personality organization.
We interviewed Diana Diamond about narcissism and its prevalence in our society today, all the way from healthy traits to Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).

    We should measure our politicians on such findings BEFORE they get into power....don't you think? That would be the most significant improvement to democracy.

    @@hectorperez1380 lol! That was a very thought provoking question. JLO strikes me as a classic,shallow, pitiful narcissist. Just blatant. So, I guess the answer is... Dr. Diamond would be uniquely capable with her. It's interesting the mix of compassion and toughness these doctors must have, dealing with jerks like that. I think of it as a kind of secular, slow burn exorcism. It's more than I could do.

    Does anyone know, how "compensatory narcississtic personality disorder" fits into this? Is it just a diffrent name for one of this, or npd in general? I've tried to look fot it on my own, but can't find clear answer, oe at least one that I understand, Because of english being my second language, I do not always get it.

  • @rfwoolf

    @rfwoolf

    I believe pathalogical narcissism is considered a compensatory disorder; the patient compensates by developing a grandeur / impervious / invulnerable false self. During times of extreme failure or embarrassment, they are said to 'decompensate', the false self is temporarily dissolved and you'll see extreme rage or extreme collapse. After some time (usually a few days) the narcissist figures out a way to resolve the mortification (it was someone else's fault, or it was their fault and they made it happen and therefore they are still in control) and he rebuilds the false self / re-compensates .

    "Co-occurring" means they really don't know what they've got.

  • @user-in1ev1sp1k

    @user-in1ev1sp1k

    3 жыл бұрын

    Co-occurring means the patient has more than one symptom or disorder. For example, substance abuse and mental disorders tend to be co-occuring because substance abuse damages the brain and can cause mental disorders such as anxiety disorder, mood disorder etc. Inversely, people with mental disorders also tend to have issues with substance abuse because they might have low impulse control or they self medicate in order to deal with their pain. Borderline and narcissistic personality disorders co-occur because of the common factor in the cause of these disorders, abuse, neglect, etc.

  • @havadatequila

    @havadatequila

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@user-in1ev1sp1k I know what "co-occurring" means clinically. The definitions of personality disorders are at about the same level as Aristotelian astronomy, where elaborate explanations are needed to explain processes that aren't understood. "The glass spheres move thusly" is the same as "BPD and NPD share many co-occurring symptoms." Psychologists don't know what they have on their hands, thus, the constantly changing definitions.

    @@havadatequila as I understand it, these labels don’t serve to define a person because the function of that is null. Rather these diagnostic labels better serve to prescribe an effective treatment. Of course, there’s the rub, I believe in one of the other videos (Dr. New’s I think) they explain that these definitions are changing. Diagnoses are a construct in the end.
