VQ40DE COMMON PROBLEMS // Nissan Xterra Frontier Pathfinder NV
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Even the best vehicles have their faults. Luckily the VQ40DE had some pretty common issues that are fairly easy to resolve. Tom takes us on a deep dive into a few really common issues that haunt the Xterra, Frontier, Pathfinder, and NV Vans.

I’ve owned my 2016 Frontier SV 4.0 for a month at the time of this comment and like the truck a lot. I found this video on a KZread search. Great info and glad you included the prices!! Thanks guys

Congrats on the new rig! Thanks for checking us out.
I suggest doing coils packs as well if doing valve covers since it's already tore down that far. As for common issues 05-early 10 timing chain guides they were even recalled for the issue
See a few exhaust hangers crack around the Converter area. But That's a smoking deal for some parts! Seems like a no-brainer to throw it in while you're in there 🤙🏽
I need a 2015 Xterra pro 4x. Waiting for Tom's pathfinder video.

Me too Edgar! I love Xterra's!
07 Xterra, lost compression in cylinder #1. Figured it was her time at 280k. She is being retired to a derby car 😢 but the 13 xterra is taking her place.

В мене Nissan Xterra 2014 року 170 000 миль ніяких проблем. В цього двигуна 2 проблеми 1 - каталізотори 2 - перегрів двигуна.
I've run my 07 Xterra bought in 2011 from 80k to 240k. Just replace a couple of plugs and coil packs after reading a P0300 code. Still running smooth. Haven't done timing chains/tensioners yet but maybe this winter.
Any chance we can get a d21/wd21 instrument cluster or full interior bulb kit?
Other fine job enjoy them all

Thanks Vic!
The OEM prices for valve covers and exhaust manifolds is low. I have some leaking into the spark plug well and a P0011 code recurring with an occasional O2 code and misfire code. My 07 Xterra six speed manual is fast but needs some tuning and possibly timing. Reinstalling factory upstream catalytic converters is my next step after replacing some sensors.
You guys are motor-heads? I assume his name was "flying brick," and I would assume they had a turbo volvo wagon or a bmw k bike! But seriously great work guys. Just bought my first vq! Low mileage frontier 6 speed. Actually that's my first Nissan, but I assume my 240z, 280z, and 620 L20b, 5 speed count. I mean, they say Nissan on the valve covers, right!
Cam position sensors, one on each side went out on my 2007.
I’ve got a 2011 frontier S 4x4 CC. I’ve replaced the valve covers, two mass airflow sensors and two evap solenoids. Up next is O2 sensors ($$$)! It shudders at idle even after a new MAF sensor.

Do they make metal valve covers for the xterra 07.
Having an issue with my 4.0 in my 6MT Pro-4x. Every now and then around 2500-3000rpm I hear a noise just as I’m about to shift. Sounds like a top end noise like a collapsed lifter. Treated it with Seafoam in the oil and through a vacuum line and it’s definitely gotten better/happening less often but it’s still there. Any chance y’all have an idea what this may be? Do these motors even have hydraulic lifters? Am I chasing the wrong issue? I’ve listened to videos of the timing chain noises and it doesn’t sound the same. Thanks for any input!

If you haven't figured it out, check your intake plenum valve. These are known to come loose and rattle like crazy at times. Couple of really good write ups on club frontier about it and how to fix it.

Never owned a 4.0 but I've worked on a few and have way too many 3.5's running around the shop on track cars. Really love the vq family. It's a shame the g35/350z valve covers aren't the same as the truck motors. I'd kill to be able to get OEM covers for $55

Damn drift tax
I've got a 13 Frontier with the 4.0. I have done the rear axle, crank & cam sensors, and timing chain and VVT assemblies, which cost almost $4000. Also, broken exhaust manifold, which looks like the one you have there. I have 125K miles on it presently. It runs good now. I guess that I can expect the valve covers to go next. I'm hoping that the transmission holds up. I don't abuse it or take it off road. This seems to me to be less than reliable.

@@mcelroystube Nail painting is such an exclusively feminine aesthetic thing to do, that I can’t comprehend why any man would do it. The kids can paint mommy’s nails. Biggest issue: cracking radiators that mix the coolant and ATF. Also, oil pressure sending units.

@@nissanpartscc I just picked up a '06 Pathfinder with 68k miles on it and the part number on the radiator matches one of the 'bad' ones. I think my plan is to just install an external cooler for the trans and bypass the radiator.
@ItchyKneeSon
Жыл бұрын
@@JTube571 The issue was fixed in 2010, if I remember correctly. If you replace the radiator with a new aftermarket one, the issue is solved. The heat exchanger, that corrodes and causes the SMOD, inside the radiator is also there to heat the trans fluid up to operating temp. It's a bit of a pain to replace, but arguably better than adding an exterior cooler. With that said, others have done an exterior cooler. I just don't know what kind of detrimental effects it's had on their transmissions. Maybe none...
