Vox amPlug Review - The Vox AC30 Guitar Headphone Mini Amp Features

Read more here:
amzn.to/2D6bo8O
In this vox amplug review we discuss all the features of the popular Vox amPlug AC30 Guitar Headphone Mini Amp and how I use it for practicing purposes without annoying the hell out of my family.
Well what can I say: The Vox AC30 is handy and affordable. They kept the functionality easy and straight forward, no unnecessary knick-knacks. As mentioned in the video, I haven't used the AUX input too much but I can see that being helpful especially for playing along with backtracks that you keep on your I-Phone or other compatible device.
The Amplug is powered by two AAA batteries, they come with the device (at least that was the case when I ordered mine via Amazon.). I still have the first set of batteries, so if you make sure that you always switch it off when done playing, they last for a long time.
Okay, the following question seems to be of huge interest: can I use the Vox amPlug AC30 with a regular amplifier and can I also use the device with effect pedals? Well, I haven't personally tried to connect it into a regular amp, but based on the comments you see below, that seems to work for the folks who actually did that. As far as pedals are concerned: yes, you can use any guitar pedal in combination with the AC30 amplug. I tried it with my BigMuff Pi and it works perfectly fine. So, to be clear: connect your pedal to the guitar -- then plug the Ac30 amplug into the pedal. You can then either connect you headphones or PC speakers to the device and let the sound flow..;-)
The best part of the Vox Amplug ac30 Guitar Headphone Amp is the price, and well, what you get for your money, meaning the quality. I don't think you can beat that with any other comparable device. I also really like the fact that they kept things very simple and easy to use. Oh, that reminds me of another good point: the case/frame is made of plastic and the device is very light. It already survived a couple of accidents (dropped to the floor), a testament to a sturdy built.
Again, it comes highly recommended. A surprisingly good sound coming out of that little thing, in my opinion. Ideal to practice and getting an amplified sound. Works well with any type of regular headphones of PC speakers. Definitely a good investment.

Hi Ana, it's not a stupid question at all. So, the sound you hear in the video was recorded via a condenser microphone and a program called Mixcraft. But I did NOT enhance the audio in any way, shape or form. I simply produced a .wav file which I then added to the video. I hope that answers your question - if not, please let me know.

BTW: Gain is always "some kinda volume control, too"! It in fact is a primary volume control (which on the AC30 original and any other tube amp will level the amount of pre-amplification). The namely Volume control is a "master" volume to select the power amp section output - so far for the original tech concept. Thus, pre-amp Gain usually is the main control over your amps basic tone, selecting between low = clean output and high = distorted output. The power amp section tubes will only begin to break up (i.e. distort) at rather high levels of amplification (i.e. high volume). So if you want power tube distortion tone at civilized volume levels you will have to leave the pre-amplification (=Gain) set very low. (And yes, I know, that equation leaves out the plucking and strumming, the volume control of the guitar etc.). It is just that it really is no surprise or news at all that turning the gain all the way down will mute the thing completely. Just sayin'. :-)

It does way more, there are tons of effects settings that can be set on 3 differant channels, press the power switch up to 3 times for either a red, orange or green lite, and there is a button on top for all kinds of effects like echo, the thing is really great , be careful when buying one though some are just 1 station for just metal, another is the one you showed and also the one I have which I like best it has Metal plus clean if you play blues, country , metal etc, than get this 1 it will say it on the box, it cost about $30 here in NY

No problem I just ordered my ac30 amplug after watching this video :) Another great thing you can do with this, is that you can go to an open mic and bring just this little thing and a 1/8 to 1/4 adapter and you can plug into the PA system so you can play without having to bring a large amp.

Got my amPlug a few days ago, largely based on this review, so thanks! For others thinking of buying, the gain is a generic "tube" crunch, but thinner, and I just keep gain and the tone at 10, volume at 5. Not something I'd ever want to actually sound like, but for practice, it's fine. The mp3 player input is pure gold. Very helpful and fun. With a few cheap adaptor cables you can run it into an effects board and out into headphones or small speakers, which helps a lot. One issue is that it tends to slip around a bit, and fell out of my guitar's output once, so no jumping around like a rock star.

Well, like demonstrated in the video, you can use PC Speakers. It depends what you mean by "public" - if you want to use the amplug on a stage to entertain an audience, you would have to connect it to a regular amp. While I personally haven't tried that yet, it seems to work well based on what the other folks shared in their comments here. Was I able to answer your question?

  • @mickeyobrien8415

Well IMO I don't think that it would be that bad for a beginning player, but for a more experienced player it comes down to you and your headphones that can make or break it for you. Definitely try it.

Stephen, okay, here is what I just did: I connected my I-Phone via the AUX input with the amplug. The sound quality is great AND you can mess around with the dials of the amplug as much as you want, it DOES NOT affect your aux signal in any way. Whatever you do on the amplug in terms of adjustments, only affect the guitar signal, but not the aux device,. I hope this helps.

Very nice looking SG. I just recently got the classic version of the AmPlug 2 and these little units are sweet. I think my next will be the ac 30 as I would think it be different from classic whereas the blues one I’m also considering is probably fairly similar. I really like the tone on your ac30 when the tone was about half and gain was on the higher end. That was nice sweet. Got a little brash for me with tone too high. I’ve found I can even get a nice clean tone that gets a little grit when I dig in on the green channel on my classic. I am going to get a 6’ extension cable so that I can have the amp where I want (on table in front of me with my IPAD) and not flopping around on the guitar. Thanks for review and good job.

Is there any problem using this as your primary learning device? I don't want a speaker unit at the moment because it's too loud. I just want to use my monitor headphones.

Hi! I'm wondering if I should get this unit IF I aleady have the TasCam GB-10 trainer? I feel that TasCam GB-10 can do the same with a lot more features. Or, is it still worth buying in your opinion? Thanks!

I'm actually about to do a review on the Tascam GB-10..;-). Well, I think the two devices have an entirely different purpose. But I see your point, the GB-10 has much more functionality. An while you might not be able to emulate that AC30 sound with the GB-10, I don't think there's a point getting the amplug if you already own the GB-10.

Ulrich Peise Thank you for the quick response! I think I'll get one after all, because I hear so many good things about it. Have you tried the other tone-models as well? There are so many: Metal, Classic Rock, Lead, Joe Satriani, Night Train. Are they very different? I wish VOX made only 1 unit with all features of the different models.

Purchased the AC30, not sturdy housing at all. The first one I purchased, the jack shorted out within a couple of weeks. Purchased a replacement, the axillary didn't work at all after three days, and I'm just a lap picker. IMO the sound is great but the price should like a $10 - $15 considering the plastic parts and fairly easy breakage, again just my opinion.

Adding new batteries, what a typical duration of a session would be?

  • @GuitarIngenuity

    @GuitarIngenuity

    7 жыл бұрын

Carlos, that strongly depends on how long 'a session' is. The newer amplug versions have an auto - power off function, in contrast to the this particular device I demonstrated in this video. This one has a switch and if you forget to set it to "Off" when done playing, then you'll drain the battery. However, if you only power the device on when needed and shut it off when you're done, the batteries last quite a while. But I can't give you an exact metric.

Robert, I appreciate the comment. But it's always a little tricky - some say I provide too much detail, others complain that I should spend more time on explain all the little features. You can't please everybody. But anyway, I'm glad you found the review somewhat helpful. Thanks again.

Thanks, great video. It fits a strat better than Les paul. My aux doesn't work on my metal Vox, but it cranks. I recently bought a Bose color 2 and it it awesome to practice at the river or on the fly wireless. I might buy another one for fun. Thanks again.

Hey nice gibson, I started at a late age playing the guitar. Learning notes, chords, songs, I started at 25 years old. Now I'm 32 years old, got some free time lately. Hope it's ok for late bloomer to learn and play guitar. Also what type of head phones would you recommend.

Does the device have to be connected directly to the guitar ? I mean, would it still work if there there was an extension cable between the guitar and device - I've currently got my guitar on eBay because I don't practise due to living in a shared house, but I'd really prefer to keep it, I'd like to learn to play, however basic/beginner I really am. This looks like a great solution. Thanks for teaching us all something new :)

I honestly never tried that - and I don't think I have a guitar-extension-cable (does something like that even exist?...it probably does, but I live under a rock, lol). Hopefully the others here can chime in!
