Leave or starve. That has been the motto of many in small towns in Montana USA for several years now. It is uplifting to see the spirit of the people of Vorkuta.

I remember flyng from Tokyo to London and flyng over Siberia and wondering what it would be liike in one of thoese remote towns where I could see some light from the darkness and the snow. Now I know! The people seem really warm. And that more than compensates for the harshness of the environment.

I am Native American, watching from the State of Arizona. You have a very interesting culture and your cities are beautiful. I'm fascinated with the Russian culture. I WILL KEEP WATCHING.

I was born in Vorkuta and lived there till I was 3 or 4 years old. I have very few small memories of loving there like the childcare centre. My family and I moved from there down south closer to moscow, then we imigrated to Australia when I was. I love watching these videos because it feels surreal that I lived there. I was Vit D deficient as a baby because obviously there was not enough sun there. A distant relative of our still lives there. I dream about visiting Russia and especially Vorkuta one day. Thank you for the video.

Hello, I was born in Vorkuta and lived there until I was 19, coming back to visit my family once in a while until my grandparents died and my mom and my other close family moved to Syktyvkar. I love Vorkuta and miss it dearly; it’s really nice to see that at least someone showed positive vibe and not only ruins of the town. Vorkuta is definitely in my heart forever and it’s so heartbreaking to see how vloggers only trying to show how abandoned and depressing everything is in there. Thank you for your video it really brought good spirits to my heart and I am thankful that you had a wonderful experience and showed others how things are there. I live in USA and often watching videos about Vorkuta because I miss it a lot. Thank you again and best of luck with all other videos.

I can't imagine the lives of the people who built Vorkuta- the roads, buildings, power, sewer lines, etc. Incredible.. Anyone who contributed to the creation of Vorkuta are heroes!

I have lived in Russia from 1993 to 1999 .As a student of Samara state engineering University, I love this country its people are kind friendly and helpful they are farmers at heart they don't lie and hard working real people

In the future I hope for friendship and co-operation between the west and Russia . Being from Canada and having grown up in a dying former coal mining town have always made me feel a kind of kinship with the people of Russia . The climate in Canada is very similar and when I see videos of small depicting small town life and village life and close knit communities is very familiar looking I have seen the consequences that De-industrialization has on a town first hand bit everyone who has chosen to stay are all very happy and can't imagine living anywhere else . The dissatisfied leave and rhe rest happily stay. I choose to leave due to lack of enjoyment opportunities but I would have stayed in a heart beat of there were decent paying jobs to have.

@@adamwatson6916 A nice heartwarming comment. Populations are friendly between countries, it's a very small group of powerful people usually those running currency and banks and the military industrial complex that push for war between countries and don't fight them themselves.

Although many portions of the city are abandoned, the city center is quite beautiful with vibrant culture. The other side of the river is scary. You should not be walking around there alone. What a brave girl!

@Nihilist Atheist Yes ghosts are probably there. Also polar bears, Siberian tigers, wolves and escaped mental patients. I would prefer if Eli did not cross that river again. I stopped visiting ghost towns because so many crazy things happened that cannot be explained other than I should have never gone there in the first place.

I have been living in a town 70° north (Vorkuta is 67° north) and the reason why people want to move is the polar night. I remember the night lasted 3 months and so many people found all that darkness very depressing. I just took a job there for a year, and I'm happy I experienced it. I found it to be beautiful, but many of the locals I met there sounded like they wanted to get away due to the cold and darkness.

Thanks so much Eli; your efforts to make Russians human and normal are very much appreciated.

I was in the US Army stationed in Anchorage Alaska and the weather is similar and so depressing the army actually suggested during the winter that soldiers go to tanning booths so they can get the vitamin D needed to keep you healthy and happy. Thanks for making this video I’m so interested in every culture in this world and I love your energy by the way

Only base I hear of is Air Force. You say you're Army, my grandad was Navy during WWII, stationed in Alaska. He mentioned I think a grizzly charging him and others. Then he said they were shooting at him, he kept coming. I assume they were shooting, .30-o6. He said they hit him many times and he kept oncoming. Then said eventually he fell. I kind of got the ideA he didn't go for killing the bear. Maybe the others antagonize it or something. It could have been a polar bear. I can't remember. I don't know and doubt a bear would handle .50 cal bullets. But, I do not know how tough they are. 1000 #'s is a lot of bear.

I grew up on the base in Anchorage and have some very fond memories from living there. But yeah vitamin D deficiency was a huge thing and also unfortunately alcoholism. Very sad. But a truly interesting place to live and I hope to visit again one day.

Interesting place. I like to visit places like that. You appreciate the small things in life more. I have a sport house above the arctic circle where it can get below -50 Celsius. Also very peaceful place with friendly people.

The one thing that i have come to understand in the last few years is that people are incredible…I don’t care what country you’re from, I don’t care what religious beliefs you may hold, I do care however that we must be respectful, responsible and not to be judgmental when seeing other countries behaviours. The polititians are somehow a mirror of their people. It is easy, but apolitical to just blame "the polititians" for all the evil ignoring that we are political animals ourselves. Without ordinary people polititians cannot do anything. That does not mean that I agree in every aspect with political leaders and want take all their responsibility. They have duties, but their failing is also partly failing of their societies.

I remember a pedestrian bridge with "max 1 person" sign in France - not very relaxing... With this kind of adventure, I would be very careful. It could be the last mistake to try it.

Strong black tea with vodka is called "Siberian grog". The taste is very controversial, but it warms and tones up perfectly

OH!Sorry(forgot to say where I was from,in a "shoutout")...I'm from a different sort of cool climate,(just not NEAR as cold as Russia's(Portland,Oregon).At least here,we can fly,or drive,to the MUCH hotter Desert climate,a day's drive away,if we need a change of temperature.

I'm a single 63 year old woman living in Florida. USA, and that darkness for 22 hours a day would be hellish. I would however love to visit as any foreign city is an adventure. Much too far away though! Keep up the good work and by the way , you're right, those little cafes look ultra modern and very cozy.

The coffee shop is absolutely beautiful and the goodies look delicious! What a gem!

This is one of your best Eli. I've always loved abandoned places. And the idea of so many desolate buildings above the Arctic Circle is just too enticing. And the fact that I'll probably never be able to visit there myself really makes your video a window into another world. And I can believe that the people who live there appreciate it. I lived in a small town in Alaska for 22 years and I loved it. We were at the same latitude as St. Petersburg and we did get around 6 hours of light in the winter, but I loved the darkness. And since the bears were asleep it was a great time to walk along trails by the fjord. Keep going Eli, don't let things stop you.

But the more you explored the emptiness began to show- especially when you crossed the bridge into the deserted part...creepy. I would never have known this place existed if not for you!
