VOR Navigation Made Easy + ADF & DME
Many of you have asked me to create on a video on how to track a VOR. So this video utilizes a VOR simulator, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and an aeronautical sectional to help you understand how to use VOR navigation. I threw in some extra info on ADF and DME as well. Hopefully after this lesson you will have a much better understanding of VOR navigation and can have some fun with it in a real airplane or on Microsoft Flight Simulator. Thanks for stopping by!

I’ve struggled with vor for God knows how long I finally understand how to use a gazillion thank you to you good sir
As a budding student of aviation, this was the best tutorial on VORs and their practical use. Thank you.
Commercial Multi-IFR pilot. One of the most straightforward, easy to understand explanations on these items I've come across. Nicely done. Great refresher. Thank you.
Nicely paced, and focused, easy to follow tutorial. Thanks.

I’ve watched a bunch of VOR videos and finally one has left me with not 2, not 1, but 0 questions. Well done and thank you! MSFS makes a great tool for real time modeling and practice as well
Thankyou. Your tutorial video's are the the best I've seen and I especially liked the part about using the VOR to line up with the runway near the end of the video.

Great tutorial thank you. Nice to know how to line up with a runway by turning the OBS to runway heading and follow the needle. Pretty cool.
@ElkoBarbell
3 жыл бұрын
Just realize that'll only work if the VOR is located on the airport property (and generally close to the runway in question). Plenty of VORs aren't located on/at the airport - in those cases (or if the VOR is at the airport but far from your desired runway) this trick will not work to line you up with the specific runway. You would need to reference the appropriate VOR Instrument Approach chart (if one exists) to know the appropriate OBS course to select.

Thank you.
Long ago I would go into flight similar and just put in some numbers that it understood as a location. And start it. Then use the VOR's to find out where I am! With 2 VOR'S I can draw lines out from them and where they meet is where I am. I did that for a long time before I started flight training!

All it does is change the ADF frequency.
This is pretty cool! Do people still use VOR in practice today, or have GPS devices taken over at this point?
@BradySkye
3 жыл бұрын
People DO still use VOR but yes, GPS has definitely taken over. You still have to learn VOR for IFR training. And VOR knowledge is just great to know, especially in the event that a GPS isn't working for some reason.

Great vid. Where can i find vor in the game or is there a website for
@BradySkye
2 жыл бұрын
Certain airplanes already have it equipped like the Cessna 172:
So if you were to plan a flight from Jacksonville FL to Memphis TN, you would need to plot out your route, knowing the direction of travel to the different VORs and all their frequencies.
@BradySkye
3 жыл бұрын
Correct. At least have some VORs in mind in case your GPS failed ... but really you can just use a GPS. VORs were made before GPS technology. ForeFlight is a very popular app / subscription many people are using. I use it when flying from point A to B as well.
Omni means omni! It does not mean that the VOR transmitting station is transmitting discrete beams. Your airplane's receiver can calculate what radial it's on (or trying to find) and can calculate to/from info and it does so by receiving signals that are broadcast in all directions from the VOR transmitting station. Here's the best vid I've found on how this works: kzread.info/dash/bejne/po5myalqppy-l5s.html
How would you find the airport you are looking to land at that’s not right near the VOR ? As you as you did for St Augustine. Cause I would think if you put in the runway heading you would just fly parallel if you don’t visually see it
@BradySkye
3 жыл бұрын
You would just fly toward it until you see it.
I’m still unsure how you used the VOR to line up with the runway
How to use vor if we need to fly not directly to a vor station, but between two stations (next to a station)?
@BradySkye
Жыл бұрын
That is more advanced and would be good to cover in another video. Unfortunately, VOR technology is becoming increasingly obsolete.
Do you know if the DME works? Especially in the 172, there seems to be no instrument specifically for it and on the display it doesn't look like it's working

@@BradySkye I was at 5500 feet over the sea and the main VOR I was intercepting was HTO (H) 113.6 on Long Island heading from West to East however I looked up my problem a little more, turns out its a glitch that happens when you start the simulator without the planes engine on.
