Volodymyr Zelensky and the Spirit of Ukraine: TIME Person of the Year 2022
Zelensky’s success as a wartime leader has relied on the fact that courage is contagious. It spread through Ukraine’s political leadership in the first days of the invasion, as everyone realized the President had stuck around. If that seems like a natural thing for a leader to do in a crisis, consider historical precedent. Only six months earlier, the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani-a far more experienced leader than Zelensky-fled his capital as Taliban forces approached. In 2014, one of Zelensky’s predecessors, Viktor Yanukovych, ran away from Kyiv as protesters closed in on his residence; he still lives in Russia today. Early in the Second World War, the leaders of Albania, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Poland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Yugoslavia, among others, fled the advance of the German Wehrmacht and lived out the war in exile.
There wasn’t much in Zelensky’s biography to predict his willingness to stand and fight. He had never served in the military or shown much interest in its affairs. He had only been President since April 2019. His professional instincts derived from a lifetime as an actor on the stage, a specialist in improv comedy, and a producer in the movie business.
That experience turned out to have its advantages. Zelensky was adaptable, trained not to lose his nerve under pressure. He knew how to read a crowd and react to its moods and expectations. Now his audience was the world. He was determined not to let them down.

Also, by your logic no person should ever be nominated for any award or recognition because no one single handedly can achieve anything significant. Ukrainian people weren't any less brave or courageous 8 years back so what's different now ? Make no mistake, had Zelensky fled, we would not be having this discussion right now.
He is a man who rose to the occasion in an inspiring way, a true wartime statesman and leader. May he lead his people to victory and a freed Ukraine.

Zelensky and the spirit of Ukrainians are the reason I support Ukrainians wholeheartedly. I donated $200usd through UNITED24 fundraising campaign created by him to save his country . I will donate another $200 this Christmas. The only ways to show our support to these incredibly brave Ukrainians people is through ACTIONS: Donation,Volunteering or Speaking out against the brutality of Putin and his regime. Unarguably he is TIME Person of the year !

I did the same when Russia started terror bombing the infrastructure, I donated 200 euros to united24. The bombings didn't discourage me, even though I know my country could be next, it made me want to double down, help Ukraine even more to win and I boycott everything that is made in Russia, not because I believe all Russians are bad, they aren't, but because I feel stained, tainted, from having consumed something Russia. It disgusts me. I feel like part of the disgust that is the Russian state (not the people) spreads into me. I will keep donating regularly until this war is won. Then I will start to invest part of my savings into Ukrainan funds. I want my money to be part of the rebuild of Ukraine. Knowing that my pension came from investments in the rebuilding and prosperity of Ukraine will make me endlessly proud.

When the enemy is at the gates, no way. I served and on more than one occasion Soldiers did their best to get out of deployments. I saw it firsthand from enlisted personnel. Hello from Canada! I already knew it, but watching this reminds me of the fact that this one amazing man changed the course of history. I believe that if he had left Ukraine, it would have been a totally different story; I believe that many people, from ordinary citizens, to war photographers, to government officials, to doctors, to utility workers helping to keep Ukraine's lights on.....I believe a lot of them stayed because of Zelenskiy. He did what true leaders do - he lead. And that's no easy feat. I can't think of another leader I have ever seen that has done something like this. Certainly no war-time leader. He lead, in the true sense of the word; he lead by example, not by theory. And that's what made all the difference - that he is so obviously genuine, and so obviously living what he believes, living the words he speaks. This isn't just leading in theory, this is leading in practice.

@@daksh3061 well that's why the Time's Person of the year is Zelensky AND the Spirit of Ukraine. our incredible soldiers are fighting the hardest fight, yes, but they wouldn't have means to fight with without Zelensky and his strong position. as a Ukrainian, i can tell you with a 100% confidence that Zelensky has done a tremendous job at making sure that Ukraine is supported by the world and other people don't forget about us. he is doing what he can and he's doing it brilliantly. hence, deserves the recognition for it.

I live in the Pacific too. A world away one might say, but the world is a small place and if Russia wins then the tsunami of oppression will fester around the world. Yes, he is not perfect (no politician can be) but a damn sight better than what Russia could ever produce because Zelensky is inherently an anti imperialist, as opposed to Putin's 18th century imperialism.
He will go down in history as one of the greatest leaders of any country ever. I love this guy and the Ukrainian people. They are showing us what it means to live in a free country. We in the US and also in other western Nations take so much for granted. We need to look and the Ukrainian people and learn....

It's great that he and the Ukrainian people have been formally recognised, however, I think he and Ukraine is much more than an award oftentimes given to people who have done much less, celebrities, basically. Zelensky and Ukraine will be inspirational for generations to come. Their struggle against a much bigger and mightier Russia, their bravery is so humbling.

@@daksh3061 i agree they are heroes too. it is a waste of time to say who is true, truer, truest. the Ukrainian military is fighting with weapons that are not all Ukrainian. Zelensky communicated to the world what Ukraine needs/ed/will need. He has real charisma, one of the best leaders alive today. i'm happy i am living at the same time he is.
That man will be in future history books as an example of amazing leader. Amongst the greatest.

He also changed how leaders engage with the populace. Politically he is revolutionary in a world of 'blah, blah, blah' nothingness. Democracy more direct even if flawed. POLS science students will study him.

I didn't vote for Zelensky in 2018, and was upset when he won elections(I knew the big war is comming and we elected a comic guy, bruh...) . But now he became a leader that listens a nation voice, he's a perfect match fo this tough situation. You never know what can happen...

@@dor4376 Я тоже, не голосовал за Зеленского, и был расстроен, когда он победил, я думал, теперь мой президент клоун, но кто бы мог подумать, что клоун станет настоящим лидером, а все остальные "президенты" будут на его фоне клоунами, очень горжусь Зеленским и очень рад, что в 2019 году ошибся и слава богу был в меньшинстве)

I'm not for this war or either country but u need to be real with yourself.. the fact is Russia now controls 25% or more of Ukraine. And people are still dying on both sides. Zelenski and Putin could've had peace talks and then maybe Zelenski would deserve man of the year, but instead he sacrificed more of his land, people and infrastructure just for his ego and all the western aid.. BILLIONS

One of the greatest leaders in history, not bad for a comedian ;) We are lucky to have Volodymyr Zelensky in such a time when the world needs to be shown what a real leader and humanitarian is, brave, decent and a hero to his people, cant say the same for a lot of so called leaders in the world, hopefully they can learn from him.
