    This is a hidden detail, but if you notice kageyama's serve routine at 29:30 it has started to resemble like oikawa's serve routine when in season 1 and 2 he spins the ball before starting his serve. Kageyama is incorporating more and more elements from Oikawa after going up against him.

    he's actually been doing this since the beginning of the anime I think, it's clear he looks up to oikawa a lot as his senior, and he learned how to jump serve from watching oikawa (since he refused to teach him) so he kinda follows a bit of his mannerisms ^^;

    He's already better than Oikawa at this point. He knocked off four service aces on a better defensive team than Karasuno, sets better and learned how to elevate everyone. - Forced Tsuki to hit higher. - Forced Tanaka to angle harder. - Set Asahi perfectly to let him unleash his hardest hit. Higher quality sets, better serve, better leader. Kageyama became what Oikawa dreaded.

    Kageyama talking about "prickly air" is likely him being at least partly in the zone and really into the game, especially given how well he's serving. Thinking back, I remember how Ukai described Kageyama being in good shape as "calm before the storm" in 2x10, which I think also parallels well with "prickly air". His serves sure struck down like lightnings here!

    Another possible factor, the Japanese equivalent to “reading the room” is more accurately translating as “reading the air”. Kageyama’s “prickly air” could be a way to say that the mood on the court is tense and exciting.

  • @gachagenie

    It's actually just one of those phrases that's hard to translate. Kageyama says "空気がひりひりしている" which depending on how you translate it means "this atmosphere is tingly", "the air is tingly", "I can feel the tension in the air". These are all valid but from the context of the scene and the way kageyama says it, it just basically means he feels the tension but he's also excited. kind of like having goosebumps.

It's the second watch of the show that really made me understand how brilliant the writing is. And no you're definitely not being overly picky about the animation in this episode, I'm not usually too picky about that stuff but it definitely looks bad in certain scenes. I think the studio got hit with the roughest part of covid while they were animating this. Up side is that I think this might be the worst episode, animation-wise.

    Going to say yes yes y e s to rereacting before watching the rest of this reaction - one of the very special things about Haikyuu is its absolutely insane reread/rewatch value. While the author often claims that they basically "wing it" with writing characters and deciding on the development of the plot, they're stupidly good at setting things up, foreshadowing, nurturing nuanced developments and leading them to amazing climaxes and feel-good paybacks. I've been into Haikyuu for over 7 years and I still discover new things for myself from time to time, be that in other people's reactions, while doing translations or just rereading/rewatching casually. Definitely excited to see your experience with it, as well as that special Haikyuu content! (Also hope that you will give the manga a shot eventually, even if it's just on your own time~)

    @@kunterborn1 yes Foreshadowing is a good point. But you can absolutely catch analogies at first watch. I've re watched Haikyuu multiple times (in fact read it more than once), so it's not that I am speaking out of my ass or to put down the piece of work, but my re reading value came from the motivation Haikyuu exuded. But thats personal to me. And not a general value to be gained from a re-watch. Imo, a good rewatch is supposed to unearth important details. Like Attack on Titan first 2 seasons, or the TV show Wire or Game of Thrones when it wasn't bad. Important details necessary for the plot you miss. Haikyuu isn't that, what you might have missed are gag elements, that's about it. And Foreshadowing, which is neat, but it's the only value imo. Too little for a rewatch reaction.

    I interpret the “prickly air” as it feeling electric or alive. Also, if you remember the grid lines from earlier in the season, it seems that Kageyama has a really strong mental image or intuition for his whole environment. So maybe it’s another way of indicating that he is so dialed in that he can even describe exactly how the air feels. For me, when I was in a good serving rhythm, I felt a chill on my neck, right where my hairline ends.

    just a little side note, but I really appreciate Haikyuu and how they depict Aran! He doesn't look like a minestrel character, he's got exaggerated features like every other character but he still looks like a human and not a caricature. he's so beautifully drawn and you can really see the care that Furudante, the author, put into designing Aran. it's the bare minimum, especially when there are Japanese born black people, but it's appreciated nonetheless.

    (My take on Coach's take on the amazing animated sequence at 10:24) 😄 The animation didn't lower in quality here and, yes the animator changed. That 1 minute and 12-second sequence was animated by one of the best animators in the industry (Takashi Mukouda). Not many productions let animators draw characters to move/look the way they want to. Nowadays, it's rare to see animators taking so much freedom and going this wild, especially in an anime like Haikyuu. He draws characters with exaggerated expressions and proportions, that's what makes his style so eye-catching and unique. If you scour through the whole season for great moving animations you'll find that more than half of the most amazing animated sequences were done by him (and the majority of those weren't liked by the coach lol). Variety is not a bad thing and every frame does not need characters to be on-model. Stretch and squash is literally one of the first things animators learn so, why can't animators apply those rules to the characters? Less detailed linework gives the animator more drawing milage to draw even more ambitious sequences. Coach stating he has some experience animating and, then him saying that this cut (14:07) is better than the previous AMAZING looking Mukouda cut is just so bizarre to me... (Not anatomically correct) =/= (bad drawings/animation) No disrespect to Coach but, it's just ridiculous to me that somebody who says that they have dabbled in animation themselves can't recognize well-animated sequences. [The Booru link (check out the comments!): www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/136758 ] Edit: Yes, the episode has some rough animations as this episode was partially outsourced (some of it had been done in-house and some of it was given to another helping studio).

    What I love about Karasuno’s game plan is that not only are they chipping away at their opponent and doing just enough to throw them out of rhythm or to make uncharacteristic mistakes, but they are also actually playing to their strenghts. They are used to switching things up, making adjustments and working with what they’ve got because they have been going up against better teams and improving by doing so. Karasuno is able to stay calm, adjust and often capitalize when things are out of system or slightly out of rhythm. Of course, they play best when all the pieces fall into place, but of all the teams, they are the most resiliant and adaptable.

    I didn't know Suna's torso trick was a real technique in pro volleyball. I love learning new things like this.

  • @lfigure1718
    @lfigure17182 жыл бұрын

    13:15 what suna basically does is he leans his entire upper kind of horizontly and uses his upper core power to swing the ball with his arm. For example, if a normal hitter's body is up vertically when they spike, then sunas body is slanted because it gives him more reach and more power because he is using his upper core body to swing

    The reason they "missed" that ball compression, and they did several other times in this season, is because they're not actually drawing the ball by hand, but using a 3D asset and just squishing it for a few frames. Back in the other seasons, while most of the time the ball is indeed a 3D object they're moving across the screen, at the time of serves or powerful spikes with Oikawa or Ushiwaka, when the ball hit the floor, you could see it properly compress, with it being drawn in 2D. But due to the usual production issues they had in Season 4 pt.2, they decided to cut back on the times they drew every individual frame of that compression and used the 3D model (which they dont need to draw but can just move) for times where they would have otherwise gone 2D in other seasons. There's an even more egregious example of this in a later episode with a line shot, where the ball compresses but the wrong way around, meaning the ball hitting the floor remains a semisphere while the above half compresses down concavely. Though I dont remember if in that case it was some 3D+object warping or straight up animators not knowing how physics work or having somehow not seen the previous 3.5 seasons

    When it comes to the midpoint animals, the birds are crows for Karasuno and are specifically Hinata and Kageyama, the foxes are for Inarizaki and are Osamu and Atsumu, the cats from last episode are for Nekoma and are Kenma and Kuro, and in an earlier episode the owls are for Fukurodani and are Bokuto and Akaashi. This is because Karasu means crow, Inari is the name of a god of foxes, neko means cat, and fukuro means owl. I will say I do miss the older midpoint moments with them serving and hitting at the water bottle, but I hope this explains the different animals being used.

    Kageyama’s serving routine has slowly become more and more like Oikawa’s! It’s my favorite detail but no one talks about it. I also think it’s such an excellent detail because of course a first year doesn’t have a routine figured out yet and keeps mixing it up.

    I can’t tell you how many times it’s a struggle to do overhand passes. Especially when the ball slips through your fingers or you mis position yourself too much under the ball instead behind. Lots of mental stress when you fail your teammates on the serve receive, but when you managed to get a good up with your overhand, definitely a rewarding moment like nishinoya!! (And not breaking your fingers) Being scared to try new things makes the journey not fun at all!!

  • @hokshii

    the puffy cheeks before a hard hit/serve are likely to communicate a sort of "brace for impact" moment, since obviously you have to be conscious of clenching up other parts of your body. but keeping the air sucked into your mouth to the point that your cheeks puff up feels almost like they're almost straining to keep all of that energy locked in for that moment they make that super powerful contact with the ball. so excited for you to meet the inarizaki captain next episode!! pls feel free to take as many pauses/rewinds as you like to discuss any details that interest you, coach! hoping it's not too much hard on your editor, but it's always wonderful to hear any and all commentary you have! that's why we're all here :)
