Ok... he never actually explained the most important aspects of an illegal back row attack so here goes. The first property of a back row attack is that the ball must be completely higher than the top of the tape at the moment the hitter contacts the ball. This means that any back row player is allowed to 'attack' a ball from anywhere on the court as long as any part of the ball is below the top of the tape at the moment of contact by the hitter. If a back row player attacks a ball that is entirely above the tape at the moment of contact, then their last step of their jump must have been completely behind the 10 foot line (cannot even touch the line) but they can land in front of the 10 foot line after hitting the ball. What makes the hit in the video illegal was the fact that her left foot was over or on the 10 foot line as she jumped up to attack the ball that was entirely above the top of the tape. If a back row player is tall enough to reach up and hit a ball above the tape (and in front of the 10 foot line) without jumping to hit it, that would still be an illegal back row attack. Jumping has nothing to do with it. What matters is whether the ball was entirely above the tape at point of contact. The back row setter who decides to dump a ball instead of setting it to a hitter can do so as long legally as the ball is not entirely above the tape at the moment she hits it. In the video, it looks like the ball was not entirely above the tape so that looked legal to me.

Indeed "A back-row player may also complete an attack hit from the front zone, if at the moment of the contact a part of the ball is lower than the top of the net."

mhawke So by tape, you mean the top of the net? I'm a back row setter and I really want to dump the ball, so could you elaborate more on that part. I want to jump when I do it, too.

Franscine Garcia The ball can't be over the top completely. I don't think you can jump to dump it since you are backrow.

Yes. Yes. The entire ball needs to be completely higher than the net. Anybody can jump from anywhere on the court all they want and hit a ball that is only 7 feet off the floor.

mhawke what if you were setting back row, and when you run up to the net to set, is it okay to do a little hop for extra power or is that also illegal?

Please read the rule about the fault of the attack hit: 13.3.3 A back-row player completes an attack hit from the front zone, if at the moment of the hit the ball is entirely higher than the top of the net. This means that a back row player can attack a ball in the front row if the ball is not completely higher than the net,it does not matter if the the back row player jump in the front row, as long as she contact the ball when the ball is not completely higher than the net.

This is incorrect. Any player can attack a ball anywhere on the court. However, back row players cannot attack on or in front the 3 meter line iF the ball is completely above the height of the net. Liberos cannot attack a ball anywhere ONLY IF the ball is completely above the height of the net.

Typically the tournament director will clarify what the rules are. I've seen it go all sorts of ways (max 2 front row players, all players can attack, only 3 can attack, etc.). Things can get even goofier when you play co-ed. You just need to ask for clarification before playing because I don't think there is any set way to do it.

Can I just say what a reduction to search out someone who actually is aware of what theyre speaking about on the internet. You undoubtedly know the way to convey a difficulty to light and make it important. More folks have to read this and understand this aspect of the story. I cant consider youre no more well-liked since you undoubtedly have the gift.

Well intended video but unfortunately continues the misconception that a backrow player on or in front of the attack line cannot jump and contact the ball. Jumping has no bearing as to weather the contact is legal or not. The key is whether the bottom of the ball is completely above the top of the net at the moment of contact.

not only does this video not cover the fact that the ball must be hit OVER the plane of the net to be considered an illegal attack, but didn’t explain any libero rules. Liberos can’t hit but ALSO cannot set a ball with their hands when in front of the 10 foot line. the second the hitter jumps and hits the ball it is called for an illegal attack. a libero must jump set from behind the 3 meter line for it to be considered legal. a hitter can also recognize when a libero sets in front of the ten foot line and stay on the ground , contacting the ball under the plane of the net to avoid being called for an illegal attack.

Ugh, I don't want to be a back row setter. I'm perfect for a front row setter because I'm ambidextrous and would be able to dump the ball pretty well.

  • @deasttn

Yes, a back row setter has to be careful about jumping up to contact a ball that is higher than the net (attacking, dumping, blocking, etc.). The nice thing about having a backrow setter is you will have 3 front row hitters, so the defense has to work a little harder.
