The US has tougher laws when it came to auto emissions. He was also one of the few executives who signed anything taking responsibility for the cars that failed. The others fell back on "We were too incompetent to know exactly how they did what they did" when it came to explaining how VW got their cars through US emissions testing and so many others couldn't. Mazda in particular couldn't get the numbers low enough despite years of trying to import diesels.

A lot of us couldn't afford our own cars so he was the go to guy!!. I remember it would take forever for the heat to come on in that vehicle and most times we'd have to wipe the windshield for him while he was driving because it would fog up on those cold days. One time we even tried to see how many people we could get in his car!! Don't remember how many and I'm sure we didn't break any records but, boy did we have a lot of fun in his car. He uses it for commuting and even for road trips too (thanks to the efficiency), and he even takes good care of it too. I honestly think the 2000s was the golden decade for Volkswagen. They had a VR6 R32 hatchback, a TDI V10 powered Touareg which is a family SUV, and a W12 Phaeton which was their flagship sedan. You should also do Nissan and Infiniti. Please do more car videos. I love cars. I had a 2018 Turbo Beetle and I loved it. After three years I got into a serious accident in it (my fault) and it saved my life. It was one of my favorite cars I've owned and it looked gorgeous. I even modified it a little so it was exciting to drive and made a lot of fun noises. The only issues I ever had with it were the result of sliding over some ice and damaging the transmission cooler which resulted in the trans being replaced under insurance. The whole time I owned the Beetle it was a reliable, fun, and attractive car. My only complaint is, I wish it had come with a manual transmission.

Very well put out video Company Man! As an owner of a (then new) 2021 Volkswagen Jetta R-line purchased for $25,800+tax in the US, having already driven 40k miles in less than 2.5 yrs, I wanted to share my pros and cons of my experience so far: Pros: 1. Very good fuel economy especially in highways. I've driven on a few road trips and I've got as much as 46-48 miles/gallon out of it. 2. Pretty good low budget driver's car. It gives good acceleration and it's helpful particularly if I'm trying to merge into highways or roads with more speed limit. 3. I do like the beige color seats (in contrast with grey interior) and the electronic display facing towards the driver. Heated seats come in handy as well. 4. Very good handling and also low turn radius. Cons: 1. Expensive car parts, easily much more than the Japanese and Korean cars. 2. Interior looks a little dated compared to other cars in the similar price range. I didn't mind though since I'm not really much into interior designing. 3. Like a lot of FWD cars, it doesn't perform well on snow roads, especially on ice sheets. I remember one time driving in 10 mph on an ice sheet road and I still couldn't stop the car even when I applied the brakes heavily. 4. I'm already feeling a bit anxious about my car's resale price since I still have more than 3.5 yrs of my car loan left. All in all, I plan to keep this car for at least about 125k miles and plan to go on multiple road trips again next year! It's really interesting that VW still hasn't gone for manufacturing hybrid cars and I feel they started focusing too much too soon on the electric cars without proper infrastructure (ala charging stations)

An aspect that made the 1960s era Beetles very popular was the fact that when it came to maintenance and reliability, they were _very_ forgiving. The air-cooled engine Beetle could be driven thousands of miles past its recommended interval for a tuneup. The '67 model I had never failed me, though due to lack of engine maintenance, it would run sluggishly. But, the engine never died on me. The car would have nickel-and-dime issues with worn parts over its 100K miles life; but at no time was it ever undrivable.

The failed takeover by Porsche, that ended up in Porsche being bought by VW, is probably a good video in of itself. VW and Porsche have been tied together for many years, not just becaues of the engineer of the Type 1 (Bug) who then went on to build a sporty version of that one post war in his own company, the Porsche 356, and the follow on car to that the Porsche 911. Ferdinand Piëch grandson of Porsche, worked as an engineer for many of Porsche's legendary racecars, as well as Audi's, and later made his way to VW and served as CEO, responsible for VW's attempt to become something of a more premium mainstream brand, like the New Beetle and other cars of that era. As a former VW owner, they're both wonderful and infuriating. Some get absolute reliable tanks, and others get borderline lemons that seem to have their own issues plus the reliable one's lumped together, most of the online discourse on this brand is very binary in that regard. In my case I got a very lemony scented car. I've owned many cars, some with more features, and more tempramental technology/drivetrains, but none have given me so many problems as my 2000 black New Beetle. The mechanical bits (engine, transmission, suspension, driving dynamics) where solid, but the electronics and quality of materials inside of the car? Horrible. Most everything that could be replaced electronic wise, was replaced at some point, and it still didn't work right. Good video.

Really dig your channel and good choice for your first car company. I knew the Nazi past, big fan of history, my first new car was a 2001 VW Beetle and it was fun to drive but very unreliable plus, I didn't really know what I was doing and neither did my folks because I needed a co-signer, and thought I was buying the car. Over the three years that I had the thing there were all sorts of issues. The CD player kept messing up, the driver side automatic window busted (they did a recall because they used plastic clips and where I live it gets very hot and caused them to fail), the automatic release for the gas cap died, but the real kicker was when I called to finish paying off the car was finding out that I, and my father, had been signed into a lease and that I would need to either renegotiate or pay an addition $15,000 for a car that had been nothing but a headache. I was married by that time and my wife lost it (didn't help that my mom and dad were less than hospitable towards her) but she calmed down and we opted to send the car back and pay the over mileage as well as whatever light wear happened over the course of driving it which came to a total of less than $2,000 and my parents refused to help on any compensation causing a break between us. I needed a car for my job and we lucked into the new Toyota line of Scions and I have driving a 2004 Scion xA for almost 20 years. I found out several years later from a friend of my wife's that she'd been suckered into a lease with VW too. That was a common practice with them but I think they dropped it after the great recession because of the U.S. government passing laws to protect consumers from such shenanigans.

I have been a loyal customer of VW since I bought my first Diesel Passat in 2002. I went on to have a 2007 Rabbit and now my 2018 GTI Autobahn. The Passat was built so badly that the doors wouldn't close in the winter. My Rabbit was perfect. Never had anything wrong with it but my parents needed another car so I gave it to them and got a GTI. The GTI is built so badly. The sunroof rattles constantly and the dealership doesn't want to do anything. The last straw was when I went for my first oil change and the dealership crushed my rocker panels. The dealership was so rude that they tried to find ANY excuse to brush me off and ignore my claim. Because of those reasons, I will NEVER buy another VW. Dieselgate ruined them IMO. To add, my dad has had 3 Beetles (65, 70 and 72) then a hippie bus. He also agrees that after the Rabbit, it will he his last VW.
