This material needs high tonnage press which is not feasible. Hence they go for hot forming.

When the sheet is hot, it needs less tonnage, because it is soft. At hot forming, when the steel cools, it will be heat treated, the same way as would be in an oven. The forming tool has a lot of cooling channels, and after forming hot, cools down the steel, which gets the desired strength (hardness, ductility, tensile strength), which is precisely tuned by both the material selection (chemical composition) and the process, i.e. the cooling process (speed). So it is a forming and a heat treatment in the same step, where the steel will be strong after the forming. The laser is used afterward because clipping is not feasible in this state of the material. (the clipping tool would need resharpening after 3-5-10 pcs)

I'm guessing this is for a low volume production car like an R8, hence hot forming over a progressive die and laser trimming over a trim die. VW didn't get to be big by wasting time.

No this is also the process for high volume models. The marerial is to hard to trim with a trim die. Thru the hot forming process the sheet metall is getting hardened. The reason to use this kind of material is to reduce the weight of the part and get the same or better strenght as the same part made out of thicker material produced in the conventional stamping process. The inner "A" and "B" pillar are other typical hot formed parts.

Can anybody tell which is the make of that laser head mounted on the robot end??

Trumpf Laser (not plasma). You can not buy the head separately, it is completely integrated with the 5+ axis CNC machine (not robot). For example, you can buy laser heads (for fiber or beam) from Precitec. They have the servo motor system built into directly the head, which allows to follow the sheet at the precise height (which is needed for laser cutting) Very pricy.

I don't see how this makes any sense. Take forever to make a panel.

i know im replying to a 2 year old comment but i cant resist You see that is the difference in through-put and speed Speed is how long it takes to make a single unit, weather it be a car panel, battery, etc if the factory can go from a sheet of steel to a car in a few minutes, the speed is high and the throughput low. But Throughput on the other hand is how much can be made over a given time, the factory might take a month or two to go from a sheet of steel to a car. but if they can have that same process going for lots of cars at once, sure it take awhile to get one car out. but there making so many at once that it is worth the tradeoff Because why go for speed and make 1,000 cars a week When you can go for throughput and make 100,000 a year?

The point here is that the material is not a simple sheet of steel, it is high-strength steel. That is why they form in a hot state. Once it is cooled, (~hardened), it is almost impossible to cut with die tools. They use laser instead because for laser it almost doesn't matter the hardness. So it does make much sense, currently, this is the only method to manufacture high-strength formed body parts, which increase the strength of the car while lowering the weight, which is a trend I assume at any modern car manufacturer.

Yeah, read some other comments. It is high-strength steel, no way to cut it with a sax. It saves your life in a car accident.
