Do you know why the oil pan doesn't have an access port on the bottom? to avoid that due to a simple failure of a gasket, several liters of oil do not spill on the road and because of that people die due to an accident due to oil on the asphalt That is why I am impressed by all the people who like this video and comment positively. you can tell there is very little common sense. And for those who want to answer me with some stupidity, I only say that I have been a car mechanic for 25 years and I have never seen stupidity like this and even less of people praising it

One quick note. Someone commented you may be able to remove front motor mount and slightly jack up front of engine to get access to rear bolts. Haven't tried however if this is true probably best to do it, as you would on just about any other vehicle that allows full access to all oil pan bolts.

You made my day. Done this work today at my daughters 1.6 Passat. Saved a lot of money at the stealer.

My car, this situation is not the first time, the mileage has changed over 150,000 kilometers, and the oil pump has been replaced. Then the mileage is 250,000 kilometers and the oil pressure is too low. I think of the owner of the repair shop. I told you that this has to be changed every 100,000 kilometers. I didn't believe that the oil pump was so easy to fail at first, but today I believe that this problem is very troublesome. If it is not handled, it will cause engine damage.

Wouldn't it be easyer just to remove the oil pan, remove all the parts (without unscrewing screws thru the cutted out buthole in oil pan), and put it all together? I mean, you spend more time creating cover, letting to dry sealer, and we are not even talking about metal filings in engine after cutout and drilling....

Hello, you probably don't even remember making this comment but I might as well answer the question for everyone wondering. The Audi's and VW's of this generation with the 1.8t's were built in such way that the whole subframe had to be dropped just to remove the oil pan. Checking and cleaning oil sludge in the oil pan is a huge hassle with these cars. Making an access port on the bottom of the pan isn't such a bad idea.

Great idea I did the golf gti easy remove sump however nothing in way but screen was Full of plastic and metal rings!!! Yes Actually -from severely smashed dipstick tube a rite dope had done rammed and rammed at .But that cut method on that motor is the best 👌

This is the stuff, you typical see at junk yards... mind boggeling.

Maybe somehow leaving in the oil, and using your mini hacksaw as much as possible, using the messy oil to pull away the shavings out of the engine as it dripped through, would have been a nightmare but maybe saves your engine long term. Any problems you've encountered so far?

I disagree. Oil pans have magnets in them that will attract any metal shavings. Also filling the emgine then draining it and refilling will wash any thing that might be there out or to the magnets cleaning it up.

diabloein thousands of micro shavings will not all be picked up by a sump magnet. Maybe the risk is low?

Kind of reminds me of my 95 cougar xr7 when the fuel pump went out 2 minutes after i filled the tank. I wasnt about to drop the tank so i pulled the back seat, used a cold chisel to cut a hole in the sheet metal, peeled it back and gained access to the pump. Replaced the pump, folded the metal back, put the seat back in and was going down the road within 20 minutes.

That's definitely a lot more practical then doing what I did here lol. I did however do something similar to what you did when I had to replace the fuel pump on my Chey Astro. There are several videos on KZread for that one. Thanks for your comment, and thank you for watching!

Works good did it on a 06 I used gasket material . The screen had to be 2 more times about 65k miles between each cleaning . Great fix .

I once had a similar engine consuming too much oil. Ended up cutting a hole through every cylinder bore to gain access to the piston rings. I put some gasoline and WD-40 to them and tried rocking and turning them in their gaps. All the shit that came off, I drained through a similar access hole through the oil pan. Used the same sealant to reseal the cylinder bores, but used more screws to attach the cover plates to each cylinder. Compression test only showed about 5-10 % leakage! Made the engine great again!

As others have commented about the gasket maker coming off internally, I would suggest anyone doing this to purchase a thin sheet of cork or rubber and make a gasket. I've even used thin cardboard to make gaskets in a pinch.

Ignore all the negative comments. You saved the car from the junk yard, and saved ur wallet. Good for u. I almost did the same thing on my 05 Chevy trailblazer. Dropping the pan is near impossible on that truck.

Magnets in the pan will catch those shavings. Then there are at least 2 filters anything would have to get through before ever seeing the motor. Really not much risk as long as the pan was the only thing he touched with the drill, saw, or grinder.

Greetings. I'm 99% sure you don't have to mess with the frame to gain access to the bolts (on the oil pan). You simply need to move the sway bar down a little bit. Once the clamps/bolts on the sway bar are loosened you can move it down and away to gain access to the oil pan bolts.

After I posted this someone from another country commented something similar to what you are stating here. However he said I could have just removed the front engine mount and jacked the front of the pan so the 3 bolts would be exposed. I did this out of frustration (the car is literally falling apart inside and out) and out of curiosity to experiment. Also at the time there weren't great videos on this however I did find a guy who posted a 2 minute video doing something similar (I linked his video in the description section) and got inspired.lol Thank you for watching and for your comment. It really helps the community to get the most information as possible before taking on certain projects.

You do have to lower the sub frame. I'm literally changing the oil pan on the same car right now. I started with the sway bar and jacking the engine up. There's one bolt that comes down and is completely blocked by the sub frame. Also the sub frame blocks the two bolts between the oil pan and the transmission. It's a pain in the ass and I'm not a professional mechanic by any means but I'm getting it done slowly but surely. I already have the sub frame lowered. Just need to get the last couple bolts and then swap out the pan and gasket and put it all back.

This is brilliant! Looking at doing this on my Passat. VW makes the oil pan removal so onerous, even if you have all the tools and shop equipment. It's just not worth doing it on an older car, the repair would cost more than the car is worth. Best part is you can perform periodic inspections of the pickup tube easily. Someone should make an after market kit for this.

I actually followed this and did it and all but one screw sealed perfectly and one baaaaarely drips and nice or twice every 20 minutes or so. Good enough till my next oil change👍🏼 fixed the problem too

I think vw knows this is a issue with the pick up tubes. They should have been the ones to install a inspection port like you did. But with vw, its always about charging and ripping off customers. I like your idea so pay no attention to those who criticize. Let them do all that extra work pulling that sub frame. Believe me, its not an easy job

Impressed with how you went about this you took a chance and made it work.

Next time reach through the drain plug hole with a 90 degree pick and poke holes in the screen ....the stuff that goes through the pick up tube goes straight into the oil filter so it's getting caught in there. This is a lot of unnecessary hacking ....

Wouldn’t recommend this on something newer, but a good result for an old, high mileage car that’s on borrowed time 👍

Not a bad idea. I have had several passats, don't ask me why. They all do this eventually and it really pisses me off. I can see how you said screw it and just went for it. The only German car I have that I like is my 74 bug.

Good idea, but your gonna have silicone plugging up your pickup now. I would have made a gasket instead. All that silicone is a bad thing. Idea was good just tweak the procedure to include gasket instead of the goop.....

Conceptually its a great idea and every car manufacturer that has sadistic design engineers (I'm looking at you Germany) should take note. However, the fact that you did not clean out the metal shavings from the pan after the drilling and tapping, plus your use of silicone gasket maker (part of which will break off and clog the tube again, are a serious cause for concern. A+ for concept though.

Thanks for the comment and this was an experiment. An isolating tool would have been a better option, and the 5 year old in me took control over the amount of gasket maker that was used.

work smarter not harder, if the sump was blocked by the frame and you couldn't access it, then just pay a mehcanic to sort this for you. You just created a whole world of problems for yourself. A mechanic might look at the hack job and charge you more to work on your car becasue he's going to expect more hack jobs to get in his way.

Putting that much gasket paste could cause the filter to block again.

honestly I cannot understand, why the hell did not you screw the sump off from the bottom of the engine, swap that part of the pump with a new O ring and srew the sump back??? why was neccessary to cut off a part of the sump???

That is so crazy you did that .. but this is really cool how you thought about this this is a big commitment but shit it works great job

I wonder if he realizes that all you haft to do is take loose 4 bolts and 2 nuts then lift the motor 4 inches and you can pull that oil pan super easy🤔

I have the alarm for low oil pressure on my 2004 Passat 1.8T. I had the sensor replaced so now it goes off sooner, LOL. After you completed this clean out, did the alarm stop going of AND more importantly did that top end noise stop?

Didn't have an issue with low oil pressure after this. The top end noise wasn't present however some of the debris that got clogged the filter were definitely pieces of the chain guides that had deteriorated. I'm not recommending anyone does this I just wanted to share my last ditch effort on this VW. Thanks for watching!

ECS do a shallow sump conversion where you can just remove the bottom half of the sump. It makes life a million times easier. I wouldn't recommend this video at all. There will be shit loads of metal filings inside the sump after drilling and tapping it.

I have a 1999 Passat fwd 1.8t aeb. I've never had the oil light come on but I was hoping to clean the pickup tube on my next timing service. Never look carefully but, you cannot drop the pan in the service position?? Not even if you loosen the motor mounts and Jack the motor up a little bit??

Of course you can. You have to lift it from above and drop the subframe. It's not hard. The written procedure sounds worse than it is. But doing this every 100k can be a pain. I understand his approach. Knowing what I know about metalworking and engines, I would have done a few things differently. But I don't see it as terrible as some comments say. Any large shards will be picked up by the pickup screen. Small ones will be picked up by the filter before it gets pumped to critical clearance engine parts. The oil pan is aluminum which is soft metal. I was cringing mostly from the grinder wheel. They are, by design extremely abrasive. I would have probably drilled each corner and used a hacksaw blade or mini recip to cut the rest if I had to. With that kind of work though, I'd drop the pan and cut the access port on the bench, making it super easy the next time.

I'm dropping the oil pan as we speak, But while I have it out, I'm very seriously thinking about modifying the oil pan with an access opening, I'm going to look at the oil pan very closely before temping it. @@simplestatic3751

I wish I had an easy solution for the issue your car is having. The Passat in this video had soooo many issues, including shutting off at a street light and needed to push it off the street. One cause for me was the fuel pump shutting down ( this gave the feeling of a misfire) after I replaced it the car ran fine for a while. Then the car got to a point where it wouldn't start. I would turn the key mother would turn but no start. I would turn the key the following day and it would start up no problem. I replaced the spark plugs (Passat has plug coil combo) and I would still get misfires. You may find some useful info on VW Forums. Slot of ppl ask and answer questions about their VWs and you may find some helpful info for your make. I really wish I had a better response for you, I know had frustrating this situation can be.

I bet your car has a worn upper cam timing chain tensioner guides. This causes over advanced cam timing and loss of power. Just tear down the whole thing and do the head gasket, timing belt, and cam chain all at once. These are not hard to work on

Why doesn’t some design a sump with an access panel on it and market it? The VAG group cars all suffer at some point with this problem!

Man ppl have posted I could have removed front motor mount and jacked front of engine enough to access the rear bolts. Apparently I was supposed to lower the subframe and support the engine from the top to my knowledge at the time and I just didn't have the tools to do so.

This works perfectly. I did it and also with the hole i cut out i added more clearance for the pickup tube so the suction neer the bottom of the pan wouldnt be close enough to pick up shit. VW had a shit design to start with this guy just made it better.

Top tip change the oil pressure senders first. Check the wiring. They have a two tiered system. Low oil pressure below 2100rpm and low oil pressure above 2100rpm. Sometimes the wires will come off or become corroded check those. I don't recommend anybody do this. Just drop the pan.

Thank you for sharing. If it's possible for someone to easily drop the pan on this model I agree with doing that rather than what's shown in this video. This model has many steps and one needs many tools to properly drop the pan. If you read a comment below someone mentioned how to access the 3 rear bolts (those are the ones that are not accessable) by removing the front motor mount then Jack the front of the engine giving just enough space to get a wrench in there. I would have done that over this if I'd known. Bit this car has been such a pain I threw the dice and it worked.

Unorthodox you say? How about radical! But roughly brilliant! That was very enjoyable. Now, the orthodox method of gaining access ,you said, was to drop the frame. That would also be interesting to better understand and see done. Poor access design, you said. Millennials would have designed it differently for sure. There would be an access panel on the pan that opens with a phone app. The app would also monitor the pick up volume and pressure. LOL. After reading all the comments I don't think they understand you searched for metal shavings with your finger. The liquid gasket is designed to use with oil so it won't disintegrate. PLus they forget you are not working on a $40,000 new car. There was a valid comment about how they would have cut the metal differently by drilling four holes and using a saw instead. I would also suggest you change the oil filter more frequently after a job like this. The Passat is an awesome style. Now put some racing decals on it!

Its not the surgery that killed the patient. It's the staff infection. All those metal shavings. I don't think he addressed cleaning that stuff out once. All that gasket maker didn't help things either. Good idea, bad execution.

I have had no issues with low oil pressure with this car since this video. I threw my hands up to make this video. Lol. FYI someone posted in the comments, in Spanish that the front motor mount can be removed so the oil pan can be jacked up a bit, giving you access to the 3 rear bolts. I didn't look but it sounds like a possibility. You may be able to find some info on Google. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching!

This is the complete wrong way to do this, take the cover off properly, what you have done is lower the life of your engine because there is no way you got all the shavings out, special award for award though, you just love grinding, must feel like a real mechanic, what you should have done is grind the shit out of the pickup too why not

This was nonsense. This is great for people saving money. But after the time and energy and possiblity to screw up you wouldve already had the oil pan off even resealed the oil pan and service your part. You found debris and decided oh yes lets go. Obviously theres failure and for the people saying that its not worth paying a mechanic well it is to do the job the right way.

I agree if you have the money to pay a professional it's a better route. This car had soooo many issues that I fixed probably but I didn't think I could do what I read was the correct way to do the job (lower frame) safety. Not to mention the interior of the car was so screwed. And after all was said and don't someone commented that you can remove the front lower motor mount and jack the front of the pan up just enough to gain access to the rear bolts....smh. live and learn. I understand what you mean based on your comment, however this is what I did and it is still working just fine. Definitely not recommend for anyone to do just wanted to share what ended up working for me. And I did get a comment about removing the front motor mount, then jacking up the engine to gain access to the rear bolts but didn't know that until I did this or else this would have been an extremely different video.
