Volkswagen "Mk4" Jetta VR6 - One Take

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Fourth-Generation Volkswagen Jetta was the first total overhaul of the Jetta's basic design in nearly 20 years, and it was immensely popular when new, and now with the Waterfest crowd. Most were sold with 1.8L four-cylinder engines, but what about the VR6 version? Could it be a bargain on the used market?
Check out the Jetta on WheelWell!

Just happy in general to see a mk4 video. Without a lot of hate. Respecting it for what it is. I will always be a mk4 guy. Just something about em. I prefer the 1.8t platform, but respect the vr6. Crayon smell has become a way of life lol. Real strong during a humid summer.

I have a soft spot for the MK4 and am glad that Japan also got the 4-motion VR6 version of the Jetta (or Bora is it is called in Germany). It is basically an R32 golf chassis (4WD) with 6-speed manual under a Jetta body. They are stupidly cheap in Japan too.

The VR6 has to be one of the coolest engines of all time. Its literally an Inline and a "V" configuration engine at the same time. only problem is because of this engine displacement has to remain small.

Ah the crayon smell in mk4's. I had two and one of them had it. Its the wax that holds the carpet in place, and in hot climates, the wax melts and then forever lets off it's scent. Hence the crayon smell.

Great cars, especially for their time, and even now! The 2.8L VR6 had 2 incarnations. 12 valve, then 24 valve. The 24 valve is better made, and more reliable, with much better self adjusting chain guides that give you much longer timing chain life. I've had my '03 GTI VR6 for 19 years thus far as my daily driver, and it's been more reliable than any Japanese car my family has owned, and still fun as heck to drive! The 2.8L 24v VR6 is a great, bulletproof engine that just feels inspiring to drive.

Coils with upgraded swaybars and getting the right wheel/tire combo is paramount on these cars though. They handle REALLY well when the suspension is overhauled and tuned properly. Lift off oversteer is fun as hell when you get used to it. Stay away from the poly rear bushings, breaks my damn back when hitting quick impact type bumps

Hmmm I'd say a Unitronic/C2/GIAC/United Motorsport chip. Race pulleys, 10lb. LFW, and a header(yes The 24v's actually have headers that make power lol). TT or Schrick cams and you have a fun little 24v VR6. The problem being it's quite expensive but if you're going to drive it for bit bit before you get an AWD conversion and HPS Set I'd say go for the N/A set up. The only thing that might take some getting used too is the LFW and Race pulleys but once you get used to them they are a lot of fun. Oh and Stage 4 Race Motor and Transmission mounts. The suspension seems sorted well and the suggestions Matt made seem good as well. I know this is a year old but hell if I had the money and another VR6 but this time being a 24v instead of a 12v I'd do it. The sound of an N/A opened up VR6 weather 12 or 24 is classic and what gives it the sound(if you read this Matt or you might know)is the shape of the VR6's cylinder head. It sounds great and breathes much better up top than the 12v does but even with the 24v the draw back for N/A applications is that the 15 degree angle engine does not breath very well, even with a P&P, BVH, or both a P&P+BVH and bigger cams. Yet despite the drawbacks an N/A VR6 weather 12 or 24 maxed out are really fun to drive. The engines are bullet proof(well maintain oil)and almost nothing you can do will destroy it. So they are great cars for people who want to learn how to drive manual to start with or people who want to really drive.

Hey Matt, it might be important to note in the title that it's a 24v VR6 being a 2003, and not the 12v. The MK4 Golf/Jetta got both the 12v and 24v. The 24v gets the better 6 speed o2m transmission, as opposed to the 5 speed for the 12v, and also more power out of the box. Every VR6 after 2002.5 got the new engine, which is *almost* mechanically identical to it's big 3.2 liter 24v brother in the R32, besides the obvious differences like displacement. Can you tell i'm a vr6 fanboy yet? =P Love this segment on TST. Cheers. - Danny

+Els we Be mine is a 2000, 196k miles, 12v vr6. Services all done myself and bought it for 900$ as a gamble+project w/170k. Got myself an enthusiastic, happy revving, confident handling Jetta after some elbow grease and being thrifty with parts.. This car has been a great daily driver!! I drove it really hard though to begin with and I destroyed the transfer gears. I did the transmission swap in the driveway and it was a great experience to do the work. After that swap I've driven it about 2 years through delivery jobs and daily life. LOVE IT! It feels spirited even when your going slow and safe when you're going fast.

sounds nice but not worth spending any money other than tires and wheels and maybe suspension parts. I don't know the price for the 4wd conversion in the US but it isn't cheap because you have to change so many parts (gearbox, fuel tank, brakes, whole rear end and much more stuff) AND you loose so much power, especially the small vr6 would feel much slower. I converted a MK5 GTI Pirelli Edition to 4wd but i had a blown MK5 R32 to take all the parts from and didn't have to spend any money for labour or tools. With the 2.0 turbo, especially with the Pirelli Edition, it was relatively easy to compensate for the extra weight: carbon intake and bigger downpipes and intercooler and an ecu tune -> 300+hp. That was 3 1/2 years ago and I learned a lot.

don't forget there are 2 VR6 engines offered in the mk4 chassis 1999-2001 was the 12 valve then 2002-2004 was the 24 valve engine if i remember right its 20 more horsepower but some say the 12v is a stronger design. I used to have a mk3 vr6 about 10 years ago and I loved that thing! they do sound amazing with intake and exhaust.

bought my son an 03 VR6 GLX with 165K. The car was Arizona for the first 100K so it's very clean, rust free, and has lots of new parts courtesy of the last owner. Only thing I'm really concerned with is the short timing chain life, and the brittle plastic connectors for the cooling system. Otherwise, the car is LOADED, drives great, has plenty of power, and looks sharp. $3500 doesn't buy much nowadays but it will get you a sweet Mark IV.

Finally some VR action! Matt is this a late model 24 valve or is it an early model 12v? I'd love to see a one-take of a MK2 VR6 swap of some sort (golf, jetta or rabbit) just so you can see the difference in power:weight compared to MK3's and MK4's which are all heavy turds... I have a 2.0, and I actually moved into it from a 1.8t mk4 (I don’t drive anything besides mk4s or mk1 jettas/golfs) and tbh I’m more in the game for reliability and vanity than horsepower, and I’ve never loved a car more than I’ve loved my 2.0. One time my fuel system had a short, so I replaced the fuel system relay under the dash, (after replacing crank and cam shaft sensors, fuel pump, all new spark plugs, new gaskets on exhaust) which mind you it didn’t even need, I literally just needed a new relay. The car has 205k on it now, and ticking, and even though it’s dented, and scratched, rims covered in brake dust, I’ve never loved a car more. It’s like an extension of my personality, and I’ll probably just keep swapping out vw’s for the rest of my life lmao
