thanks for the video, mine is definitely doing this, 2016 R w/ 37k on it. could you tell if the case was cracked? not looking forward to replacing it, lol hopefully there will be a full aluminum option like the mk6 upgrade

Case didn't appear to be cracked but unfortunately you have to purchase the pump as a single unit.

Worst design on earth. Then they place it under the air intake.

Yeah, I had 2 more of these fail in one year.

There’s a warranty extension for these. Call the dealership. They’ll replace it but you have to prove you’re part of the class action claim.

Make sure to remove the 'teabag' from the coolant expansion tank. If that thing splits, all the silica crystals escape and its bye bye heater matrix. The tank will have 'mitt silikat' written on it if has the 'teabag' fitted. This is jerry for 'with silica' possibly?

Yup mine just failed with moderate overheating with 57k miles

Same. My 2016 Golf R has no coolant leaks (yet) but as this issue is not just a couple of people on a forum, I feel as if a failure is only a matter of time.

I couldn’t find one but what I did find online is you have two choices....pull your front bumper or remove intake manifold. Which means pulling air intake and a few cables/lines. I think an amateur would take 10 hours for DIY.

tbh, my dad's ocd made me think that my 2017 1.8T could last a bit longer than 120k (75-80k miles) during summer inside a garage, i pop the hood latch so heat can come out faster instead of being stuck inside engine bay. I used to open the hood all the way but i dont want to replace the "hood strut", with this, im ganna do it again for quicker heat dissipation

Hmmm, I have a 2017 Audi TTS. Might just have the same pump. Maybe THATS why I keep getting those “Not too late to purchase our extended warranty” letters from the dealer.

Very comprehensive tutorial on another VW/Audi engineering failure. The German geniuses at VW keep spitting out ridiculously stupid (vital) parts that any third grader would deem un-workable. The only saving grace for German cars is that they preform second to none. (when they aren't in the repair shop)

The labor book shows 5 to 6 hours to replace that part in a VW

MK6 GTI’s are also notorious for water pump failures. I’ve had two replaced under warranty. Luckily no further failures. Not sure if the water pumps have changed between the MK6 and MK7’s.

They have but only slightly. The actuator is now built onto the the pump

I found out mine was leaking 2 years ago and but its such a slow leak that I haven't bothered replacing it. I've only ever topped off coolant twice in 6 years since new and both times it was less than 100ml. The dealer quoted me 2 grand, but I'm assuming thats to replace the pump with another one that will eventually fail the same way. I'll probably just DIY it if it gets any worse or at next coolant flush since the pump is only 400 bucks and it seems easy enough. Hopefully by that time there will be revised version that actually fixes the issue permanently.

There are a few how to videos online. Ours was pretty bad and we’re on our third water pump. It keeps leaking within 12 months to VW keeps replacing it for free

​@@AdamChandler86 Well that sucks, at least you're not paying for it. I was unlucky and the dealer scheduled me 9 days outside of warranty expiry for my powertrain. I am running APR software tho so they probably wouldn't have paid paid out anyway. I had read sometimes the new pumps leak because of poor install at the dealer but it seems like it happens way too often for it to be an installer issue. I'm sure the dealers are pretty practiced by now at installing these. Either way I'm sticking with my WAWP for now. Maybe someone in the aftermarket will make an all metal unit or something that doesn't leak.

A slow leak will potentially cause the oil pan seal to corrode. How do I know? Because I have a leaking water pump and a leaking oil pan.

similar spot in my case where the coolant was coming out (Seat Leon ST 290, 2.0 TSI, it had probably some 27 000km or ~17 000miles, when that damn thing broke), the thing is, in my case it took 1000km to lose some 15~20ml of the coolant, that being said, the warning appeared on my dash when the sensor inside of the coolant reservoir was not touching the coolant while i was driving downhill; and since no coolant was anywhere to be seen, i thought i would bust the engine somehow; ... well, no engine oil in the coolant, no coolant tin the engine oil, no leak visible anywhere....and so i continue to drive like that another 2000km, until i found out where the leak was, since the amount of the coolant that was leaking was ridiculously tiny - the water would be gone by the time it touches the engine itself, but after 2000km, it made it's way to the oil pan, so that i could actually spot it; ... i ordered the OE part and replaced it, it takes some 3hrs to replace it, it's a pain in the a$$, but most ppl could do it themselves, the amount of tools to replace it is very small, and maybe someone who did that few times before, could replace it within 2hrs, of course i am not including the time needed to put in the new coolant.

@@alanw5812 on a Seat? bcoz some Audis have the engine turned by 90 degrees, and the access to it is way easier, i am not even sure if you have to remove the manifold in there, well i had to, alone to remove the coolant hoses was like half an hour; but i did not remove the big fans with their housing from the radiator.

We just had another failure last month. We're on our 4th now. Just sold the Sportwagen today because we're tired of replacing water pumps every 10K miles so I think not.

I have replaced this 5 times on my audi a4 b8.5 . It leaks at that same square thing there, why did they put it there? What is its use?

The MK 7.5? yes it does. It's still a Gen 3 EAAA motor.

German cars have had water pump issues for decades but this issue is only MK7 Golf platform vehicles from what i can tel.

The updated waterpump/thermostat are no different to the original. I had mine done on my Leon cupra four years old with 30k on the clock. Fitted with the updated one and just over six months later it failed on me again. So the updated one is still shit

@@AdamChandler86 I love the car and it's only an Auto because of the wife. That said I'm not alone being on the third thermostat, another guy recently had it replaced at 39,000 on SHOP Dap comments. Otherwise, sunroof was completely replaced June 2018 under warranty, as driver side frame was lifting (bad glue or application, there is a TSB). Seems "tight" now but did have one leak last year related on driver side to possible drain channel being blocked something about a "spider filter/cover" removed, but since then very heavy rains and it's been tight and no leaks. No other issues to report but I would like to get the auto trans fully serviced with fluid and filter as I do drive it "German-ly", but that remains a mystery. Plan to keep maintain properly into the ground, if that makes since for now.

Just got my 2017 GTI back from it's service and M.O.T.... 26000 miles and mines got this issue.... back in the shop on Tuesday to get it replaced :(!

@@AdamChandler86 i'd feared the worst when I had to top up the coolant already, unfortunately my warranty ran out yesterday 😂 but the good eggs at VW said they would pay for parts and ill just have to pay labour fees...

Mine just started last week, I fill coolant and 20 minutes later there's nothing in the reservoirs, I think it's the same problem, and the coolant was boiling today.

At the 3:35 mark you can see this is an H revision part number... if you (or anyone else) would like to comment on what versions are still failing would make things interesting. I believe they are up to revision P (06L-121-111-M, 06L121111P). Maybe they fixed it by number P ;)

New version of part out

My MK7 says P00B7 code “Low flow/performance”. Im not loosing coolant. My coolant temp gauge goes all the way to red line after a few minutes with engine turn ON but the car is not really overheating. Car goes into “limp mode”. It could be this waterpump/thermostat kit?

Hard to say. That's totally different than what I experienced where coolant was leaking. But being a Gen 7 Golf, I'd start with water pump.

@@trineshgovender3796 Thermostat/Water pump unit. Apparently valve get stocked open and engine doesn’t really overheat but water temp indicator in the dash marks like the motor is gonna blow away anyways. So, change the hole unit, (water pump, housing and thermostat). 1 pice.

yep and the failures are all over the place. Our vehicle, 80K miles which I hear is at the very upper end of the failures with many happening 40-60K miles and some edge cases at 10-40K miles. $400 in parts, 4-5 hours of labor. Sigh. Hope this one lasts a lot longer.

I have a Golf Mk7 2.0 TDI from 2013, which Started overheating. The gauge goes from 90 to 120-130 in just a few seconds and then goes back down as fast after staying there for a while. There's no pattern to it, it can happen after 3 hours of driving like after 4 minutes of standing still. I have changed thermostat and coolant temperature sensor but the temperature still rises to 130°. No white smoke from the exhaust and no bubbles in the coolant container. I read on the forums and people have the same problem as me, and they changed the water pump but they still have the same problem. So it's stupid for me to change the water pump and the problem won't be solved. Has anyone had the same problems with the Mk7 2.0 TDI? Thanks in advance for any help.

It won't hold long though. Coolant is flowing fast and is quite hot. I wouldn't trust this for more than just getting me to the shop.
