I've been watching Chris (Battery Life) since the early days of the ID3 - he does 'in depth' reviews rather than just regurgitating the press release, well worth checking out 😁. I looked at an ID3, but thought nah, the interior looked cheap (for £36k at the time), and the exterior colours were not great. So eventually, I went with a Cupra Born, looks good (inside and out), and drives really well - very pleased with it. VW as a group make really good, if slightly expensive cars (driven 'GTIs' for nearly 25 years) - software it seems not so much 😂. I hope VW watch this video and take heed - or else they will find themselves in real trouble.

I think one reason why many things take so long is that they have contracts with suppliers and purchase commitments for certain quantities. Volkswagen is known for more or less blackmailing its suppliers in price negotiations, but also has to make commitments in return. If they want to change faster, it will be more expensive and they try to avoid that. That is probably the reason why the change of the steering wheels to buttons takes so long or also with the new infotainment hardware. They want to use up the quota first before changing to the new system, also with the ID.3. If that is true, it is a mistake because the cost of the ruined reputation is much higher for VW. This is shown by the fact that people still claim that VW's software is crap, even though the new one is not bad at all. To get rid of this bad reputation costs them a fortune.

I’m glad they didn’t change more than they did - it means my 2 year “old” ID.3 aren’t too outdated yet. 😁 In all seriousness though, it doesn’t mean too much to me, since I really like my car and have no plans to change it to another. Despite its flaws, I’m happy every time I get behind the wheel, it drives really great.

The explanation that Chris gave is the correct one. We know for a fact from Auto magazines that VW started working on the "facelift" of the ID.3 about two years ago. Back then, they didn't have the new motor, the new 4.0 software, the new bigger screen that's now in the ID.4 / ID.5 since the end of the 2023 summer.

I'm definitely a VW fan boy and have been fortunate enough to be able to get new models recently but the ID.3 and Mk8 Golf were an interesting step sideways after my mk7.5 golf. I really like my ID.3 but I'm not blind to it's shortcomings. I just hope VW figure out how to progress in this new era - I'm planning to get another ID.3 after the finance period completes - hopefully I'll have a choice of trim and colour this time.

Really intersting video. I liked hearing about press car availability. I have always thought GM did a great job of getting the Bolt into the hands of as many reviewers as possible. I saw channels with less than 1000 subscribers showing off press cars when I was shopping for a vehicle. The best part for GM was that the reviewers were mostly giving positive reviews because they were so excited to get the cars (not to mention as I have discovered that the Bolt is a great value).

I believe it's a bit smaller, and it probably has less features, being an older platform. I would love to see a small hatch like this in Canada, the Volvo EX30 looks interesting, but Canadian pricing is much higher than the US. eGolfs were popular here, but they had limited range and were hard to find new, used prices are still quite high as people love the car!

Great video. Explains some of the issues with VW and their slow development to change things. I have a 2023 ID4 Pro S AWD and really enjoy it. The ONLY thing I really wish that VW would do is to refresh the software. I hate having to touch the screen EVERY time I get in for my profile and I'm the only user. And I would like if they would put a drag and drop icon bar across the top for things that you frequently use. That would be a big improvement for the 'older' ID's. VW managers just ordered new software to be added on to the existing control unit concepts, the. The managers decided to buy slow equipment, probably with unreliable intel hardware, no GPU, bad connectivity, but it was cheaper. They were saving money. Facelift literally means aesthetic changes. This is what the id3 got without technical update. The id4 got technical update without aesthetic changes. So I think Volkswagen used the terms. The same thing that makes them slow to adapt, is made German manufacturers the Image that German cars are well designed well-built good quality products. Vw just announced that they cutting the Time takes to bring a new model to market into half, by replacing some of the testing with simulation, test period or a model will only last one winter instead of the current two . I'm afraid that chasing the Chinese and Tesla in this will result in Tesla and Chinese Quality . And I am afraid that people won’t accept this from a German Company.

Good comment. Sounds very plausible.... they tried and pushed too hard, with big and powerful internal depts, not quite ready for this time to market. The Tesla's, rivians, CN companies have almost all started from scratch, with no derivatives. They probably have 10000 parts in their systems in total. VW has that in maybe 2 cars. And they have 20 cars every three years for the last XX years. Gazillions of parts. It's just a totally different world.

While you're in Europe, Kyle, can you dive into why WE CAN'T HAVE AFFORDABLE BATTERY ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN THE UNITED STATES? Quite obviously, manufacturers are making them. Heck, Toyota -- the EV fanatics' favorite whipping post -- even has a Proace Electric van over in Europe. So, why can't we get affordable (under, say, $35,000) battery electric vehicles in the United States? And yes, you can point out one or two or three examples with fairly severe limitations that are available here, but THERE WILL BE NO "ELECTRIC REVOLUTION" if 80% of the citizens in this country CAN'T AFFORD to purchase battery electric vehicles. I'm certainly in that boat. For instance, just about every day, I drive past our local Nissan dealership, which is just a few blocks away from my house, and see the same eight (8) Ariyas (and 5 Leafs) sitting there, as if they were firmly bolted to their parking lot. As it seems that the "early adopters" are getting their vehicles, especially the CCS world is just utterly moribund. I sure don't see any ELECTRIC REVOLUTION going on anywhere near me.....

I think the ID3 is the perfect city car, the problem a few years ago was that a lot of people wanted a Tesla and couldn't afford it so bought a VW and complained a lot because the software wasn't great on the ID3 on the first versions and because they really wanted a Tesla. To be honest, most people who drove EVs, in the beginning, were either driving Teslas or wanted to drive Teslas, now I think as more and more issues arise with the software on Tesla, such as phantom breaking, self-driving software not working, sat nav problems, build quality issues no speedo, silly things like glove box , wiper stalk and the way Tesla sell cars, really very bad trade-in valuations, so much so, that most people sell their own cars, and the lack of service centres and no nationwide dealerships. And now of course when you buy a Tesla you are making a political statement you probably support Musk's stance on Ukraine, and Musk's support for Putin and Musk is a Magahead, these are now serious downsides to owning a Tesla if you like Democracy and support Ukraines fight for democracy. Tesla in my opinion is a Political brand.

Tesla has shown the other car companies that you can shaft the customers and still sell cars. That was unheard of in Germany, now we have got used to handing over 55000 euros for a Tesla at the press of a button, as if that amount of money raises no emotions. Unfortunately the new M3 facelift looks quite lovely, but still with all the sh*t things you just mentioned..

Yes Tesla has proved you don't need an expensive nationwide dealership ( actually worldwide ) , you will buy online and book a ranger service online and there will be no competition between dealers because there will be no dealers, you want a Tesla sell your own car and pay us upfront, and it will spread as you say all manufactures will get rid of their expensive dealer network .This is the future @@jellyd4889

To much money for this car. VW needs to get over it's self with it's over priced cars that usually have a ton of proplems.

Legacy automaker BS, this is why they can’t compete with Tesla. Wishing them the best, but good luck Tesla and Chinese makers disrupting these whales

When EX30 will come to the market, no one will want to buy an ID3.
