Volkswagen 1.8t Techtonics Tuning Turbo Back Exhaust Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Check out the first Steve's Garage review! I recently installed a Techtonics Tuning 2.5in catted turbo back exhaust with the Magnaflow Muffler on my MK4 VW Jetta 1.8t. I decided to make a bit of a review so everyone can enjoy the nice sound of the Techtonics Tuning Exhaust. The exhaust has been installed for 300 miles at the time of this video and I recorded how it sounds under the following conditions:
0:00 - Techtonics Tuning Exhaust 1.8t Cold start
0:25 - Techtonics Tuning Exhaust 1.8t Warmed up
0:52 - Techtonics Tuning Exhaust 1.8t Slight Acceleration
2:06 - Techtonics Tuning Exhaust 1.8t Pulls
3:19 - Techtonics Tuning Exhaust 1.8t Neutral Revs
3:41 - Techtonics Tuning Exhaust 1.8t Interior sound
I bought the Techtonics Tuning stainless steel catted turbo back system for the MK4 1.8t and so far I love it. After 300 miles I have no check engine light, the car runs great, and I have no nasty smell from running a non-catted exhaust system. Until I made this video I thought the Techtonics Tuning Exhaust system was a bit quiet because I had only heard it inside the cabin, but it really does open up under hard acceleration. Outside noise is acceptable from what I can tell in person and after watching this video. I live in an area where I was a bit concerned with start-up noise in the morning, but once the SAI pump shuts off the system is definitely similar to stock level volume. Cabin noise is only slightly over stock, and from my experience drone is extremely minimal if not nonexistent, even with the turndown tip. I have installed stiffer engine mounts, so engine noise and cabin vibration is definitely more than a stock setup, but noise and vibration from the exhaust is minimal compared to stock.
I did install the Techtonics Tuning 1.8t Exhaust myself, but didn't make a DIY for it because of the difficulty of installing an exhaust when you don't have a lift. I think trying to film an exhaust instal video with the car on the ground would have done more harm than good. If you have any questions regarding the installation of the down-pipe and cat back system on a VW 1.8t, or questions about my experience with the exhaust, please feel free to leave a comment! I can also film other videos of different conditions or angles if you guys want! Thanks for watching!

I just installed a Techtonics system, 2.5", Borla muffler from the downpipe back on my B5 Passat. I'm very pleased with it. It is not a loud system, but my car is totally stock also. The install of the downpipe was the only real hurdle as I didn't remove the cat, the rest of the system was a breeze to install. I do plan on more upgrades, but this is worth the money as a great starting point.

Awesome! I've had mine on the car and still love it. Like you said, it's not too loud, but definitely a nice sound. Now that my car isn't a daily I'd like to make it a bit louder, but it's definitely not a priority. Glad you enjoy it and checked out the video!

i have their 2.5" downpipe and just it alone made a noticeable difference in the way the turbo spools; so much more room for gases to go through the turbine and waste gate compared to the smaller, cramped area on the stock downpipe...now I just need to get their true 2.5" (resonated) cat-back (either stainless or aluminized); not sure if borla or magnaflow muffler makes a difference other than in price...cheers, long live wagons...

K03sport I'd like to run an open down pipe just to try it. I didn't get the chance when I installed it. From my understanding the difference between Borla and Magnaflow is that Borla is slightly louder. I went with the Magnaflow, so I can't give you much detail on the Borla. If you live in a snow/salt state I would definitely go for the stainless over aluminized!

Is that Northern Green for paint? My Passat is the same color!😁 Anyways how easy was this to install? Thinking about getting these for (you guessed it) my Passat. Any recommendations? Can be as loud as can be, I got a couple buddies with straight pipe BUT this car is my daily so not a whole lot of racecar.

Good eye! It's actually Bright Green Pearl, which isn't offered on the Passats, and Northern Green isn't offered on Jettas/Golfs. It's definitely close though! The install was super easy. Getting the old rusted junk out was the most time consuming part. My Jetta is also a daily, and at the time I needed to pass state inspection, so my car has a high flow cat and resonator. It could absolutely be louder, but it also doesn't drone, sounds great at any speed, and doesn't make me go deaf driving it. I also don't get a check engine light if that matters to you. Let me know if you have any other questions!

What happen to the Borla muffler?

When I bought the system you could chose Borla or Magnaflow. Honestly, I don't even remember why haha. I believe I read Magnaflow was a bit quieter which I wanted at the time because of where I lived. I have no qualms with it, as a daily it was great. I wouldn't mind a little more sound because I no longer daily the car, but going louder is easier than making it quieter.

Did you have to TIG weld the SS parts together or just use clamps? Seems like clamps would be a bit janky.

I used the clamps that it came with. You can upgrade to V-Band clamps which are supposed to be better, but I didn't. In all honesty, I was expecting to need to the get the system welded, but it's held up great. Been on the car for 4 years now and I have zero complaints or issues.

Thanks my friend. Good to know. I am a welder, but have never TIG’d to this point. Good to know that it’s all DIY and pretty simple. I’m debating whether or not to wrap in heat shield type tape as well.

@@adamkorekach9936 Don't quote me on this, as I don't have personal experience with it. BUT, what I've read is that the fabric wrap is great if the car is not going to be exposed to water regularly. The wrap holds moisture, so light water or any moisture from humidity will get burned off, but regular rain or snow from daily driving your car will destroy the pipes.

Is this one resonated or no resonator?

  • @StevesGarage

    @StevesGarage

Resonated. I don't have experience with non-resonated, but this doesn't drone on the highway. I'm not sure how much sound you lose, but I'd rather it not drone than be a little louder.

ramses1775 Mine is resonated. I called Techtonics before ordering, and they said the non resonated is a little louder but drones more. I do a lot of highway driving, so I definitely didn't want that.

Steve's Garage I have a mk4 GTi that's in pretty good shape. I just want a little more noise and flow. Don't know which company to choose

ramses1775 TT is expensive, but to me it's totally been worth the money. It's not loud at idle, but if you get on it it's loud enough to notice but not attract cops. The fitment was perfect and install was easy. I also went with the high flow cat, and I don't have a CEL which is perfect for me because I have a state inspection where I live. The install was super simple, and I haven't touched it since which is what I wanted. I'd much rather spend a little more money to do a job once, rather than replacing defective parts and such. That being said, it all depends on your budget, and what will work best for you.
