    Yes, the Gjallarhorn. In Norse mythology Heimdall holds the Gjallarhorn at the base of the Rainbow bridge and when Ragnorok befalls Asgaard and the giants armies approach Heimdall will blow his horn that is heard throughout the cosmos announcing doom. Also potentially used as a drinking instrument.

    I particularly like that they took advantage of Geoff's unique low bass sound - which was perfect for this arrangement. I've heard this dozens of times now and I still laugh at Geoff's initial low F near the beginning. (And it's reprise for the credits!) I still get chills at Eli's high snarly, heavy metal sound at the piece reaches it's climax. And the ending - quiet, fading away as if they were sailing off into the distance. But knowing Geoff, they're off to hug many foe-men, not hew them.

    ok I can't comment on the music but on the origin of this "song". The original is a "poem" by Egill Skallagrímmsson, found in "Egílls Saga". The saga sais he wrote this at the age of 7, after killing a 10 year old boy. His father wasn't happy about it but his mother gave him praise: Þat mælti mín móðir, at mér skyldi kaupa fley ok fagrar árar, fara á brott með víkingum, standa upp í stafni, stýra dýrum knerri, halda svá til hafnar höggva mann ok annan. I spare you the translation because most of the translations which are out there are wrong and there is ongoing debate among linguists on how to translate old norse. The context of it however is right. Egill's mother is proud on him and she told him that one day he will steer a proud ship and sail forth with the raiders to slay many men... in the very entertaining but historicly very aweful series "Vikings", both actors did a great job on the pronounciation: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Znqr3KuOlKncYbg.html and no, this is not a "viking battle song". There were songs for everything but they are all lost, we know none of the old songs, sadly. Skål :-)

    There's a Russian musician (Alina) who also has a very popular KZread video compilation of this song . At least four vocal tracks and eight tracks of her playing older musical instruments, including the hurdy gurdy, while dressed as one scary Viking. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fYalq82NnKqvf6g.html The Hurdy Gurdy, an ancient droning instrument (like bagpipes) adds a haunting quality while allowing the player to also sing.

    Because I'm a huge nerd myself, I feel compelled to point out that viking is primarily a verb. You don't *be* a viking, you *go* a-viking. It means to take a trip abroad with the aim of coming back rich. This can be done via raiding or trading. A merchant taking his knorr to sell a load of furs in France is viking just as hard as the warrior in his drakkar going to sack an English abbey.

  • @Markle2k

    @Markle2k

    3 жыл бұрын

    Viking er ikke et verb. Viking har altid været et substantiv. Hvad du siger er en myte. Man går ikke "viking". Der er en fast udtryk, der betyder at tage man sig på vikingetur og være viking: "i viking" Viking is not a verb Viking has always been a noun. What you are saying is a myth. One does not go "viking". There is a fixed expression that means to go on a trip as a viking and be a viking, "i viking". This is a clue as you don't use the indefinite pronoun in front of most occupations. "Han er læge" means "he is a doctor". I think that the notion comes from English speakers seeing what looks like a gerund with the "-ing" ending and forming a false association. But that isn't how you form gerunds in Danish. It uses "-en", or "ende" for the adjectival form: "Det er hans skriven" or, "it is his writing". "Why is the child screaming?" is "Hvorfor skriger barnet", literally "Why screams the child". The answer is "Det skrigende barn er syg", "The screaming child is sick". They don't really exist in Norwegian or Swedish. You swim or go "to swimming", you don't go swimming.

    This was fabulous! I'm so glad you analyzed this video, as it is one of my favorites of theirs. Eli really shined, and his rock voice quality is phenomenal. I'm glad that you called his skill out, his talent is so good and he has such skill with manipulating his voice it is amazing. Did you know he was the voice of Santa in Oogie Boogie and the voice of the Grinch in Mr Grinch? They had him do a bit of his character voices in an AMA on patreon because people can't believe it. I also love that you focus on Layne a lot. I love Geoff, of course. His vocals were what got me interested in VP. But people have a tendency to overlook the others, especially while reacting. And Layne is hands down the best beatboxer I have heard in acapella. I actually was weirded out by vocal percussion until I heard him and have come to appreciate it. And he's got a great singing voice - I love when he has a chance to solo - as well as being a visionary when it comes to arranging. I get so excited when you point out specifics of what Layne is doing. Here are some recs - for more Eli being a rocker check out Carry On Wayward Son. For ridiculous harmonies, cool Geoff vocal play, and a dang fun song, check out Bang!. For the core group alone with no collab partner and some treats of classical music included, see Eleanor Rigby. And in honor of J None leaving the band :( you should check out Man In the Mirror. It is beautiful, showcases J and Eli, as well as their collab partner Deejay Young, who is amazing! (He's also with them in Bang! and his high notes are ridiculous!) Honestly, if you could react to every VP song they have, I would literally watch every single one! Lol. Please make VP reactions a regular thing!
