(VoicePlay) Has Geoff Castellucci's speaking voice changed?

Ойын-сауық

[REACTOR SAFE, CONTAINS NO MUSIC VIDEO SPOILERS]
One of my viewers ( @LS-vz6nk ) asked if I would consider comparing Geoff's speaking voice from early to now, which I thought was a fun idea, so I made this little short to see if there was indeed a difference!

A major difference here is the type of mic and distance from that mic. His primary vocal frequency (called the F0; a term of denotion, not a musical note) is about the same; we just don't hear it the same because of the difference of how the sound was captured.

His natural resonance also is better due to his age but that’s most guys peak vocal age where resonance and power is the easiest but I love Geoff and he is THE BASS❤

You can hear a pretty big difference on certain words. The more vowel-like (open) the overall word is, the more he tends to slip toward subharmonics

@@fainfawn7641, Geoff's voice is quite unique in how when he hits the fry points (we all have them), it sounds like a midpoint between mode 0 (vocal fry) and mode 1 (modal voice). It's like even in talking, he has trained himself to go into a hybrid between the two modes of speech. He does it singing, too.

His voice still isn’t finished maturing as a bass, he doesn’t reach his peak until early 50’s. Which for a soprano we hit ours at 32-34 and we hit then start losing by late mid to late 40’s depending on menopause. Never thought that was fair, a bass stays strong until late 60 or mid 70’s.

Oddly enough (I learned this from a pro singer) tenors and baritones tend to get HIGHER with age, but basses tend to get LOWER, not reaching their full depth until they're in their 40s. The reason has to do with testosterone, which thickens the vocal chords. After 24, a man's testosterone will gradually decrease. As it does, the vocal chords are less thick, and their voice gets higher by 1-2 whole steps. Of course, this varies on the man, and guys who take hormone supplements might not be as affected. However, a bass singer relies on not just the thickness, but also the length of their vocal chords, which will loosen with age. A lighter bass (bass-baritone) will go up with age and may end up being a solid baritone by age 40. However, a true bass will go DOWN. As much as Geoff used to insist he wasn't a "true bass," classically trained bass singers like Peter Barber insist... YES HE IS! And his lower range after 40 proves this. Although a man's natural hormone levels will not be what it was at age 24, and thus the vocal chords may not be as thick, a bass singer's vocal chords were already very long, and age loosens them. (The guy I learned this from called it "old age sagging in the best way possible.") This allows the man to get even deeper. Similarly, women will gradually have less estrogen as they age, so their voices get lower. I definitely see that as a contralto. In high school, my lowest note was E3, with maybe C#3 in the morning. Today at age 43, my lowest comfortable note is C3, with G#2 in the morning.

@@rhov-anion hmm, I've always heard that ALL voices get lower with age, including tenors and baritones. because as you mentioned, vocal cords will get looser with age, meaning higher pitched voices will loose control of their highest range.

a few reasons for the difference: mic difference, distance from mic, personal setting vs. public speaking. I have a fairly deep voice and when I am speaking to someone face to face like the later video, I speak in my normal voice, but when I am speaking in a more open environment or with multiple people, I will raise the octave of my voice a bit to cut through ambient noise. A very low, especially soft-spoken voice, doesn't cut through noise very well.

Its slightly deeper. But it's more to do with distance and quality. Obviously talking in a studio with a good mic directly Infront/near you is going to capture alot better than in a room with the poor/mid quality mic away from you. And if the mic recording is far away you may even raise your voice higher to be louder and clearer for the mic to hear better.

I remember my voice as I kept growing up. It just kept getting deeper yet more refined. My voice was always raspy when I was a kid and it kept going lower but smoother. The best example I can for this is like melting metal. It’s rough and jagged, but it gets melted and refined into a smooth sheet. That’s the best I got. Geoff’s voice has definitely gotten lower over the years which is how he keeps hitting lower and lower notes. I think back then the lowest notes he got was like G1 area and now he’s hitting E1’s and B0. That’s how I’ve been recently, only being able to hit B1 back then and now being able to fully chest a B1 and go fully down to A0 (and up to G4 chest and G5 falsetto which Geoff can 100% do but better than me). I love voices :)

It's not gotten a lot lower, that's true. A little bit, but not much. The difference is more that it's gotten a bit fuller and resonant. We notice it better on his livestreams, as they are recorded through a laptop mic (which has VERY little bass), and you can really tell that his voice has changed. It's not a huge difference, but it's quite noticeable. I can't show patreon clips on YT, so I just had to post what I had available 😅

Geoff doesn't use vocal fry for singing in general, mate. He only uses it to add effect for something. You should have in consideration the fact, that Geoff is almost half the age of this Beast Deep Bass!!! Every voice is unique. It's true that he always had this deep voice, it's has just gotten fuller, smoother, more ressonant and darker. Every single human goes thought this phase. His chest register actually goes under what you have mentioned. He steps at F1/F#1 area without chest-fry, to be specific. Although his every day range is G1-A4.
