The drunken sailor is Matthew "Bucky" Buckner, a member of the group back in the 4:2:Five days. He also appears in the minis I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) and Candy Caravan Escapade. He was also the choreographer for Geoff's Monster Mash video. Fun (or creepy) facts: The lyrics for Drunken Sailor have a darker meaning than what they appear to be. Putting him in the long boat can either mean sticking him in the boat lashed to the side of the ship until the swaying and heaving causes him to be sick and sober up, or to actually put the longboat into the water with the unfortunate pirate inside, having it trail behind the ship at the mercy of the ship's wake. Shaving his belly with a rusty razor might induce tetanus or at least a nasty infection. Sticking him in a scupper (the drain holes on a ship's deck) with a hose pipe on him means to lay him, face up, with his head in a scupper, then to hose him down with cold, disgusting bilge water from the bottom of the ship, Putting him to bed with the Captain's daughter actually means to tie him down on the deck and lash him with a cat-o-nine-tails. Geoff's lowest note is that lovely D1 subharmonic at about timestamp 1:25.

Such a fun song. I had never really paid attention to the lyrics other than “ what do you do with a drunken sailor” until college when my roommate provided some very suggestive lyrics. So when I heard they were doing this I was a little concerned. I was relieved that there are traditional lyrics and they used those. Geoff wrote the bridge which really provided a nice change of pace. When you watch again, watch Eli while Layne is playing with his toys. I believe that the whale and the boat are a reference to the Wellerman which they put out as a mini not too long ago. That would explain Eli’s frantic head shaking and desolation when the whale 🐋 ⛴️🐳 finally catches up .

I remember telling you that they obviously need a wench in that tavern, and you are the perfect candidate. Jennifer! Oh this is a fun one! Sub-harmonics from Geoff and a few extra lyrics thrown in for good measure. So many amazing and fun moments in this one, they just always have fun with their songs don't they? The performance almost distracts you from the music it's so fun and entertaining! And at 17:56 they appear to have broken you a bit on this a prelude to a Voiceplay focus week! 😂 Oh and that half pitch change from "morn" to "ning"! What an interesting chord change! Followed immediately by a key change and a pace change to the song! Wow ... deep breath ... I do think you needed a pint for this one! Oh and you could have been an "accent consultant" on those spoken phrases! 😁 Great reaction and analysis as always Jen! 😊

Bucky was a member when VoicePlay was known as 4:2:Five. He currently works at Disney World as a voice actor. He did the choreography on Geoff's Monster Mash and he was in one of VPs recent minis - 500 Miles. I heard you when you did that subharmonic in Folsom Prison Blues. Congrats! Loved Geoff's "I'm Gonna Carve His Heart Out" (with a wooden spoon no less) who did this in tribute to Alan Rickman in Robin Hood. Eli followed that with his British accent with the VoicePlay line.

Holy crap that last key change is something else. Adding the raised third to turn the key with half step increments, while almost impossible to tune (they did an admirable job, but the balance of the chord was off so it sounds a little flat.) - pure genius on Geoff's part and a gold star in the arranging column.

I think that's fair. Ptx has evolved but very much stuck to their wheel house. If you watch their top 5 you will have heard most of what they got. HF is always interesting and mixing it up a bit with lots of patriotic stuff of late but, again, pretty consistent. I feel like VP are exploring more and, maybe due to focusing on online, have time to mix it up and kinda compete with each other to come up with new and interesting stuff.

Oh, Jen, have you seen the film "The Fisherman's Friends"? Based on a true story. A bunch of fishermen from Cornwall are collecting and performing sea shanties. They end up in a pub in London (don't ask) and manage to get the entire pub to sing "Drunken Sailor." So fun! (One of the other fun parts is when they agree to sing the national anthem for the late Queen's birthday. Only they sing the Cornish National Anthem ... "I guess that's buggered our chances for a knighthood..." lol)

One of the trickiest is "put him in a leaky longboat and make him bail her". At this tempo I am not sure it is doable at all.

It is. I sing it at about this tempo. It takes practice, but it can be done.

A nice reaction. There you can see the difference between score artists (music theater and others) and free live performers. I've been playing and singing the "Drunken Sailor" for over 35 years {solo and with a shanty choir}: dm (D minor) - and the last harmony in the finale D (D major). Unfortunately there is no record of this, that was all before! KZread and all that social media stuff. By the way: I would really like you "reactors" to simply let a new music video run through it in order to get a first, unadulterated "reaction". Then - in a second run - you stop in between to point out and explain details. Would be worth a try, right?
