Absolutely. Marco is a surprise. Especially if you weren’t familiar with him or that familiar with his voice before watching this performance. Tarja, you’re kind of expecting to sound amazing even before you hear a note. But that doesn’t mean that Tarjadidn’t do an amazing job. Both knocked it out of the park!

He's amazing. I find amusing how he is taken as "just a screamer" until they actually listen to him and are surprised and amazed at his voice quality and performances. And his adaptability to perform with 3 singers with such different styles and enhance their voice to make the combined effort a delight. He's the best male voice match nightwish could have find. Although Troy is not that far behind. Can this band get any better?

Marko's high scream is amazing. Tarja has such a lovely sound but the way this duet plays out they both seem superhuman.

‘Superhuman’ is the exact word I always use when telling people about this performance!

Marko is one of the greatest frontmen in metal, he just had to duet with Tarja Turunen and Floor Jansen, which are different but possibly two of the most powerful, technically gifted singers alive.

Welcome to planet Tarja...she's been in my blood for over 2 decades and now she is in yours...Tarja started singing and playing piano at age 5 and had 7 years of pro level classical/operatic training...her enormous voice is what launched the industry...

It is 7? I guess it depends how one counts, because I don't know exact dates, only years. 1993 - 1995 Savonlinnan taidelukio (Savonlinna highschool of arts), specialized classical the last year. 1996 - 2000 Sibelius Academy, university level music school 2001 - 2003 Karlsruhe Hochschule für Musik.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, have mentioned in an Interview (several years ago), that he loved this version. I can't remember his exact words. And this is what I love about Nightwish when they do Covers, is that they put their own spin on it while being true to the Original songs because if you make an exact copy, whats the really the point. They do the same thing in High Hopes also from this Concert, and its great Cover.

This version of Phantom of the Opera is forever my ABSOLUTE favourite! The grit and primal voice of Marco combined with Tarja's colorful voice. They changed it up SO much, but still kept the soul of the song. This is a TRUE cover, they took it and made it their own. I love the total chaos in the end! It so fully embraces the mindset of the voice, and the haunting nature of it. I was lucky enough to see them live 2 days before this concert was recorded, and when I heard that this song started, I can not express the emotional reaction I had. I had NEVER thought I would be lucky enough to hear them play this song live. Thanks for the reaction! #WeWereHere

Yeah she had, but she didn't quite manage. Maybe in Phantom of the Opera. But when I listen her other songs they are better in other concerts. And as she wrote in her open letter after the concert that she was just so happy she could pull it through despite of her flu, and told in an interview she couldn't sing in the morning rehearsals at all, then there probably was difficulties. The 2nd half of Ghost Love Score her voice was spent, it is the clearest case for me, I noticed her problems when I was comparing the background singers in EoaE GLS, two other live versions of GLS and the album version, and found that there are two different versions what comes to the background choir. First half she could still sing, but second half no...

Right. I like the way he can Look at the keys to "see" the notes... Many musicians can do that. When I look at a keyboard, I can see the Fretboard. I sing but I have yet to be able to see vocal notes on the keyboard so clearly...

What a great reaction! As an old NW fans, it really warms my heart to hear positive comments about Tarja's vocals, because I have always loved them. Too bad so many new fans can't really appreciate her era, and some can't stand that operatic sound (and it's not even full opera, she can go full opera-mode when needed). But, Nightwish has many great cover songs, like "Walking In The Air" (Snowman by Howard Blake) from their "From Wishes To Eternity" Concert-DVD. Then of course "Over The Hills And Far Away" (Gary Moore Cover) and "High Hopes" (Pink Floyd cover, with Marko's vocals). Both from their "End Of An Era" Concert-DVD. But both of those two DVD's are full of great original NW songs, so I'm not sure what I'd like you to watch next. All of their live DVD's are 100% golden, with Tarja and with Floor. So I just hope that you continue doing these NW reactions, because there are dozens of songs you need to hear.

Some people onlu like rock and pop (contemporary style). It's not that they are only against Tarja (although some do that to boost their idol). The Latin Americans are more used to operatic and classical vocals than North Americans. I read from Wikipedia that in the USA opera singers that had vibrato were disliked, although in Europe vibrato was considered beautiful. There's plenty of Tarja's fans who speak Spanish, many North Americans don't like her. Edit: made clearer use of America, North America and the USA.

I love this, Floor and Tarja are both excellent in their own way.

I recommend more Nightwish with Tarja: - Swanheart, Walking in the air, Dead boys poem (very emotional songs), Pharion sails to orion from the concert DVD From Wishes to enternity. - Planet hell, Wishmaster, The siren from the concert DVD End of an Era - End of all hope from the Summer Breeze festival 2002.

I love Tarja's voice! Nightwish has 9 studio albums, 5 with Tarja (first vocalist and co-founder of the band), 2 with Anette and 2 with Floor, the current singer. Most of the most beloved songs were originally recorded with Tarja. It would be nice if you checked the original versions. As a first suggestion, an analysis of "Slaying the Dreamer" or "The Siren", both recorded on the DVD "End of an Era", would be good. The differences between Tarja's belting and lyrical singing give a very beautiful color to these songs. Thank you!

Amazing reaction video! Thank you very much Mike Goodrich! Tarja Turunen was the original Nightwish vocalist for almost a decade, defining a big part of their sound with her classically infused vocal techniques which combined perfectly with Nightwish's inicial power metal and later symphonic metal sound, and also with Marco's vocals, as you noticed it was a perfect match in every way! The great thing is that Tarja has been having an amazing solo career in the last 15 years... I knew a couple of Nightwish songs from my "pre-kids" period. I just discovered this song a couple of weeks ago and it touched my heart so much. I saw a lot of reactions and this one might be one of the of best. I mean, say nothing read body language to feel what he's feeling. You can't be enjoying and analyzing at the same time. And you did it first with feelings then with skills. Best way to enjoy it. Great

Absolutely the BEST version EVER!!!

But since he (Andrew Lloyd Webber) wrote Phantom of the Opera for his wife (Sarah Brightman) , he can never confess this is his favorite version.

I actually don't care what videos you are reacting to. It's your genuine and honest emotions and enthusiasm that we can see radiating from you with every second and every note played. It is soooo amazing to see passionate people do what they love. Please, don't ever stop being that awesome = )

Compare with the version by Floor and Henk Poort from the Dutch TV show Beste Zangers. Similar, but different (NOT "better", though). Just another version to enjoy. Btw, it's pronounced Tar-ya...

Gonna nitpick here. You can't really compare them. Here's why. Both this and what Floor and Henk did on Beste Zangers are the Nightwish arrangement of the song. To really get picky, you could call them 'similar' Nightwish arrangements. The arrangement done on Beste Zangers is the arrangement that Nightwish did on their studio track for this. Everyone seems to forget that this came out on their album "Century Child", which came out in 2002. that arrangement is slightly different than this one here. Beste Zangers went straight with the album track, while this one is caught in the moment, live.

I like to ad something very importante remark for the male singer: the composer Mr. Andrew Loyd Webber said after seeing the Dutch version of the musical the Phantom, mr. Poort is the best Phantom I ever heart. There is an other remark to make on these 2 renditions : Marko and Tarja sang the part, but Henk and Floor played the part.

@@hansevers6407 Marko absolutely played the part. A darker, grittier and more animalistic phantom than most do, but his performance is just as theatrical. You can't compare to Floor when it comes to acting a song though, she outshone Tarja in that aspect.

Lots to discover, The Nightwish Army suggest the Wacken Open Air 2013 concert, which is absolutely amazing for a live concert. But Buenos Aires is so much fun!

Interesting seeing your reaction to this song being so favourable - this was actually how I found Nightwish way back in 2003/04 ish. I heard a more classical version of the Phantom of the Opera song somewhere, then tracked down a couple of different versions. Had no idea why one of them was labeled with Nightwish - keep in mind this is before modern incarnations of KZread and Wikipedia made it easy to find out things like that, listened to it last of the versions I found and had my mind absolutely blown by the piece.

You should listen to NightWish - Planet Hell [Live]. I believe it's from the same concert as this one. It's one of my personal favorites mostly because of the drum solo in the beginning.

It's a very difficult song for a spinto soprano but Tarja sang it like a light soprano every day in gigs and she never fail the high and perfect notes!

I love this cover, prefer it over the original. Please check their cover of High Hopes by Pink Floyd from the same concert.

This is def. my favourite Tarja live performance, and most likely my favourite from Marko as well, but he does have a lot of great ones like high hopes and the Islander, so maybe def. top 3 for Marko

Love Floor, but Tarja cannot be touched on much of the NW catalog.

Now you need to watch the version with Floor and Hank Port on the show Best Zangers, it is so good as well.

If you want to react to Tarja you should react to her singing Ave Maria. She has a whole album of Ave Maria the video is the with Paolo.

The Phantom is a psychotic killer... a serious madman. Marko nails that better than anyone I have ever heard sing the song. He sounds unhinged and he should. This was my introduction to Nightwish. I've been a fan ever since.

I believe there was a paper written saying that modern metal/rock relates closely to classical/opera. It’s kinda cool to see how they can mend together with covers like this!

So you don't know if you can't handle a whole emotional show of Nightwish? Don't worry, it's normal. Crying with Nightwish is not a crime. :)

Performances like this show you why the versatility of Nightwish is so legendary. Exquisite beauty wrapped in metal and sprinkled with pure emotion. Nightwish may have a new queen, but long live queen Tarja. Gone but never forgotten!

I cannot put my experience of this song into the words as well as I would like to, but the way Marko's and Tarja's voice compliment and contrast each other at the same time in this song is really something I do not really experience much in other songs... there is also this kind of contrast in other songs, but The Phantom of the Opera takes it to completely different level somehow.

Even though I might be a bit late 'to the party' as they say, I want to point out how good it is to 'see and hear', that Mr. Goodrick did not pause the video in between hearing it! Cause it potentially cuts people off, who also hear it 'for the first time', when the music is constantly disrupted. There is no problem in turning back to critical parts of the song afterwards. But hear it first and foremost in it's full flavor, before you pick it apart, when analyzing it! Thank you Mr. Goodrick for your input and the way you presented it!

Another great song with the two is The Siren from this same concert. I find The Siren more mesmerizing than The Phantom of the Opera, but we all know Phantom is more iconic and therefore more well know. Still, it would be awesome if you could analyze the performance. Tarja produces some chant-like sounds that always sends me to another world. The performance is on Tarja's channel, btw. Cheers.

I love how Marko sounded like a mad phantom. Tarja actually conveys beautiful terror/possession as she is singing with action and her voice.

Oh man, just because you added that "whooo o o you're in the army now" quotation I hade the thought that I would love to hear how Nightwish would cover that song! I mean it could be the Nightwish Army's theme song.

Definitive Rendition. Tarja of course nails it, but honestly Marko is crazy good. I always get chills at the end when he says "All Rise".

When i first herd Nightwish (with the exception of Sleeping Sun that i knew it without knowing its Nightwish ever since it went live), Tarja was gone, but it was her song (or her version) that i 've seen first. It was right around 2013-2014 when Floor became a member of the band. Tarja was so beautiful and the fact that she was removed from the band made me like her so much. But even her parting from the group helped the group evolve and deliver some great music! In the end Floor became a bless for us that love Nightwish music. More versatile but so skilled and talented as well, to the point that i prefer her take on most of the band's songs. Tarja is always there though, and she will always be, with her precious voice becoming a Nightwish for so many of us. If you wanna listen to more of her songs with the band, i would love it. I suggest Nemo, Wishmaster, Ever Dream and ofcourse the Sleeping Sun!
