As someone has already written in the comments, Damiano declared a few days ago that he has "special" vocal cords: they never close perfectly, always some air passes between them and I think this allows him to obtain the "roaring effect" more easily. But he doesn't always use it. In ballads you can often hear him without the effect (almost always at the beginning of the song), for example in the cover "If I can dream", which they recorded for the movie "Elvis" or in "Coraline" or in "The loneliest" and many others. Maneskin are now 21 to 23 years old, but they started in middle school. Thomas and Ethan (guitar and drums) were still 14 when the group started busking in the streets of Rome, in 2017 they participated in X Factor Italia and since then Damiano has been followed by the same vocal coach. The songs have always been written by them (Damiano the lyrics), so they know perfectly well what to do in order not to have difficulties.

That's right. I saw the Italian interview where he revealed that he has a congenital malformation of the vocal cords that makes them not open and close as they should. An Italian voice coach went on to explain that what happens in this case is that the person has to compensate in order to perform and Damiano has managed to do this compensation exceptionally well. This is what produces this raspy/distortionary quality/texture when he sings. I believe that, as he acquires more experience and gets older, he'll be able control and polish this technique to be an even better singer.

Also actually he modifies some parts of this live vs the recording where it goes much higher at times, and I think it's actually really, really cool that he modifies this live in a way that still sounds great, fits the style, probably helps with his vocal sustainability and provides an alternative for people who wanna sing this thing but can't make the high stuff well.

It's a good display of his vocal intelligence. There's nothing wrong with leaving out some high notes if doing so allows you to survive an entire tour. Freddie Mercury did it throughout his entire career.

When they came to Argentina they played I wanna be your slave TWICE, and the second time was after his body pack fell and got lost in the crowd, and he sounded different but more natural. It was 10/10. He played over half an hour without it, till the end. Top quality, no doubt. Ps: After they finished the fans found the body pack on the floor and gave it to the security guy

They are still very young. They busked on the streets of Rome from 15-17 then on XFactor Italia 2017 until Eurovision 2021 where they won. Damiano is 23 and the band members 21/22. They formed in Middle school. They are all exceptionally talented. He doesn’t force his range in live shows, but does have greater range. Try La Paura Del Boui from Radio Italia Live.

Great to hear an expert’s analysis on Damiano’s voice! He recently told in an interview that he was born with some kind of malformation in his vocal cords and that’s why he has this unique sound. The interview was in Italian but I understood that instead of being closed together he has a hole in between the vocal cords and that’s what creates the sound. Somebody correct me please if I’m wrong - I’m neither fluent in Italian nor do I know anything about singing 😅 He also has a personal vocal coach so he is training all the time.

I just heard a similar thing when I watched the Try Guys Broadway video lol. The actor who plays Beetlejuice on Broadway has a vocal cord malformation that allows him to sustain a raspy voice like Damiani without overstressing himself. I dont remember if it was a hole or just that it didn't close all the way or something but it was similar

Yes, basically when we talk the vocal chords open up and then close to let air out. I think Damiano's chords don''t touch completely when they close, so there's always a little air coming out, which allows him to sing like that without damaging the chords.

By the way, the song Beggin was first released in 1967 by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. (don’t know who wrote it). It was the song that someone (not the band) posted on I think TikTok and it went viral, much to the band’s surprise. It helped kickstart their international career and touring. Yes they are young. They starting busking in Italy when in high school at the ages of 15, 16,16, 17. Damiano is now 23 (and band mates are 22, 22,21: They are finally all legal🥰

So glad you react to some Måneskin! I would really love to hear your opinion on some of their Italian songs and his performance on those. For example Zitti e Buoni, Coraline or Vent'anni. They are more rocky than their english ones and also more complex (at least in my opinion^^). With Supermodel you picked probably their most poppy song. So maybe the Italian songs are also more up your street musically😉

Very happy to see you react to maneskin, although supermodel, a fun song, but you could had chosen torna a casa the unplugged version for a masterclass performance. La.paura del buio, zittie e buoni, coraline, la parole lontanne, the loneliest are power songs. Damiano is such a vocal powerhouse,.such a distinctive voice, raspy, powerfull, clear. I saw him on interview and he said his vocal chords are curvier i think hence the distortion. The raspiness is not an effect, its just his voice and considering he is singing professionally since 2015-2017 and that voice sounds intact, actually even more beautifull it means his technique works. Please continue the Damiano videos and go for torna a casa the unplugged version...you will be mindblown

He seems to be just a natural talent, he developed his tecnique by himself. He also mencioned that he has a congenit malformation in his vocal cordes, like he has a space between them or something like that. You could check out some older videos, there is one very interesting of them performing a cover of "Back to Black" by Amy Winehouse, from 2017, were you can hear his raw talent. Another recomended performance is the cover of "Pyro" by Kings of Lion, from 2018, i think you"ll find them both interesting. Helo Sam, thank you so much for your professional analysis and reaction to Maneskin. I read below that many fans suggested you to check several other songs so I an leaving you below links to live performances where you can more properly watch Damiamo singing and check out some of the beautiful lyrics of their songs in Italian. I am a fan who prefers their more rock rawer-sound songs rather than the latest "Supermodel" or "The Loneliest" a bit overproduced for me but I love them anyway, they're fun and they pour such a positive energy. I know Damiano began singing at a very young age not sure if he took lessons in any case nothing at professional level and when they started busking or auditioned to XFactor Italy in 2017 what he had was all based on his personal effort and you can hear since then he's come a long way. During XFactor he got in touch with an Italian singer and vocal coach, Danial Satragna, who started educating him in a more professional way which I believe she is still counseling but from what I heard aroung nobody is training him daily. In certain performances is pretty obvious is tired altough in time he's become more able in handling the performance and he's also very careful in keeping a healthy lifestyle as long as their job allows it... live @wiwijam I wanna be your slave+zitti e buoni kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIp8l8anYcbecbQ.html la paura del buio live @radio italia kzread.info/dash/bejne/l3thxKSSmbm9h7A.html coraline - live with orchestra@ sanremoo 2022 kzread.info/dash/bejne/qqWTqNprmM2aeLA.html vent'anni kzread.info/dash/bejne/rHxns8ygn8uWYqw.html for your love live @1LiveWDR kzread.info/dash/bejne/fZmEvNGdeNHIc6g.html the loneliest live @ chetempochefa oct2022 XFactor Italy 2017 . first audition kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGGNtrivhbHRfqg.html

the thing with Beggin, it's that they did that cover as teenagers. Even before thy did it on X-factor in 2017. And they'd pretty much stopped singing it on their tour for years. And then after they won Eurovision, it somehow went viral. Honestly, Måneskin is my fave group, and I utterly adore Damiano's voice. But I'd much rather singers sing in their own style, and do what they like, rather than just try and have everyone copy the same style. It keeps things as a whole more interesting.

It's the equivalent of instant mashed potatoes. Bland and there is a thousand different brands making the same thing.

But ,millions fans loves only Damiano,Maneskin, not "thousand different groups" 😏... And many "age-old " fans just "lost " their playlists after Eurovision🏆🇮🇹, and we are really happy about this😁🤟...

So fun that rather than ignore & move on when you personally don't care for/about something, you went out of your way to be a negative nancy about it. You can, of course, but it's an... interesting life choice, let's say.

@@VocalAttitude yes. It's call engaging and having an opinion. Isn't personal, although you seem to be taking it that way. Not a good place when you try to shame people discussing art on its own terms.

@@adamcboyd yep, and you're free to have it in the same way that I'm free to wonder whence the dire necessity to do some drive-by negativity about something you clearly don't care for on a video that isn't even by the thing you don't care for. Weird that you have to come here, watch someone's analysis of a thing you clearly don't give a shit about, & then be a debbie downer about it. If you think Måneskin is bland unimaginative shite, that is entirely your perogative. No idea why, if you're so desperate to spread ugh in the world, you're not commenting on *their* videos about how trash they are then, but go off. I'm just, you know, engaging and having an opinion. 😩
