Omg, just the little comment on the begging about "voice dysmorphia" is gold worth... That's one of the things I love about this channel, here we are constantly reminded that we are only humans and should not be so harsh while comparing one another because being different does not mean it's worst...

your point about being conditioned to how a human voice sounds and comparing it to filters etc is so trueee it's helpful to be aware of this

The thing about putting reverb on an (let's use untrained rather than "terrible") untrained voice is that now you've gotta hear that note you were flat on for the next 3 seconds while you sing over it.

I think this is the first time I've seen a voice teacher analyze Hozier. Thank you for that! I've been obsessed (in a completely healthy way, of course 😀) with Hozier for years now. He's a brilliant songwriter, musician and singer. This was a fun analysis.

I just want to say, it’s so amazing to see how much more comfortable you look in your videos since your first uploads. I remember when I first started watching you, and it felt like you were restraining yourself a little bit. But now you move so much more freely and express yourself in what seem to be really authentic ways. And the amount of joy you show when you see people singing in interesting ways is very contagious!

Omg I love how meta your jokes get in this video. I appreciate how you can maintain the same quality of educational substance but have increasingly gotten better at being entertaining in your videos. Side note the whole vocal dysmorphia thing is why I’m trying to learn how to do production and even with a dozen filters on, 90% of how good I sound comes down to how well I sing into the mic.

Man, I've not even passed 3rd minute and I was going to say about the same as already Bruna below/above did. Please don't even stop going freeily into unknown territories of philosophy of culture, psychology of perception, epistemology - or whatever it is really - as you did in the first minutes, while reacting AND ANALYZING, because you have honestly interesting and enlightening things to say. This, along with sense of humor, great balance of basically everything, that makes difference in your videos comparing to other similar channels, and wants me to come back to your channel. Just go with your flow and don't look back, please. PS. But still all this past content led me today to checking quietly - with an app on the phone, in the office room at work, with few other colleagues sitting in the other room behind mine with the doors open - whether I reach E5 with my head voice, or not, and wondering if my voice would have sound smooth enough between registers. True story. And I don't even sing!!

Having had a lesson with you and asking about singing with your own voice vs doing an impression, this is such a good example for me to hear. Especially given that Van Morrison is a really easy impression for me to do that is very distinct from my own "natural" voice. This sounds like Hozier. Singing a song by Van Morrison. And it's great. Good stuff, Sam.

I was shocked to find a Hozier reaction that I haven’t seen yet - until I realised this is new! Yass. 😍 Love your commentary and style… I hope you’ll do an analysis / reaction on one of his own songs sometime. I know you’ve done the TMTC Subway performance but like another one. There’s one really ferocious performance of To Be Alone that I’d love an analysis of (even though it’s fan filmed, the sound is not that bad) or maybe Shrike (Recorded live for World Cafe). Ps. I kinda want a shirt that says “Better vowels” with a nice graphic to go along with it.

Great point about the reverb - and not hearing the real voice because the mic and the sound production can change sound so much and we don't hear the true voice and then get angry when people sing without it and judge them about how terrible they are. Also, enjoyed the baiting to write comments.

Informative and entertaining analysis as usual ! I think his accent does help him with the more round vowels. I grew up in a town close to where he’s from in Ireland and I have also been told that I tend to lean more towards the ooo sound rather than aaaa. Would you think he’s singing those A flats in full chest or more of a mix? It’s interesting to see that some people seem to say it’s better to show more teeth on higher notes and bring the sound more forward where as others say it’s better to drop the jaw more and bring the sound back a bit so as to avoid pulling chest.

As a member of the listening public, I hate the sound of auto tune, just in case you think everybody loves it for some reason. Good Luck either way.
