Most of my issues with this video are because I do not believe how they described resonance leads to good singing. Pedagogically, asking people to open their throat leads to pulled chest, not a resonant and full sound. I believe that the video I am reacting to has confused open and resonant. By learning how to utilize different resonance strategies, I believe people can have more control over their resulting sound. Because my focus in these videos is on technique and pedagogy, not on critiquing sound choices, I favor the physics definition of resonance: "the reinforcement or prolongation of sound by reflection from a surface or by the synchronous vibration of a neighboring object." The problem with singers simply asking for a resonant/full sound by consciously trying to open their throat is that our sensory awareness is misleading. If you don't already know how to make that sound, you will probably add tension and inefficiency just by trying to open your throat. As a teacher of vocal technique I believe directing singers to a focus on good vowel choices and relaxation is a much better choice for finding an efficient and full sound. My entire focus is trying to help singers find easier ways to express themselves. Because of this my focus is on WHY sounds happen, not exclusively on the artist's interpretation. I consider myself a singer, but I am a teacher first. Singing and teaching are completely different. They help each other, but brilliant singers are often not the best teachers. Here are a few excerpts on the topic from Kenneth Bozeman in his book "Kinesthetic Voice Pedagogy" "Others echo the concern that a throaty, swallowed tone can result from attempts to open the throat. Some speech language pathologists are leery of open throat directives as being contrary to the frontal vibratory feedback typically sought in resonant voice therapy." - Kenneth Bozeman, Kinesthetic Voice Pedagogy "The principle challenge to effective throat opening is this: our kinesthesia (sensory awareness) of throat space is misleading--in fact, it is exactly backward. If you ask a group of people which vowel feels the most open throated, most will cite /a/, or which vowel the most closed-throated, most cite /i/. This is indeed the way it feels. If asked to inhale through their most exaggeratedly open-throated sensation, most people will make a yawny /a/, which upon inhalation will be accompanied by a moderately loud turbulent noise and cooling in the laryngopharynx (perceptual throat). Paradoxically the throat is rather narrow in the /a/ and at its most open posture with the vowel /i/, primarily due to the difference in tongue shape and tongue fronting of those vowels." - Kenneth Bozeman, Kinesthetic Voice Pedagogy Fight me

Thank God! Someone with REAL credentials and knowledge. When people talk about resonance here on youtube they refering to that "ringy", squillo sound used by operatic singers to project their voices over a an orchestra without artificial amplification. How can you expect that from pop singers? And why would someone need it when they have microphones to project their voices? Very educational video. Great job, dude!

The problem is they try to use opera standards (terms/techniques) on pop music. When they say resonance they mean that forward ringy quality (that sound like a mix of vibrato and reverberation to me). And classical singers have/had to use that technique because they didn't have microphones and had to be heard by everyone on the theater

The term resonance is a word that many in the vocal community refer to a note with optimal technique. The fact that you identify the differences between the supported and the "resonant" notes just supports the fact that there should be a proper word for this . OF COURSE everyone knows that all sound has resonance . NOONE needs to mention or discuss this LMAO . Relax . We use the term resonance to describe fantastic technique and strain free notes that is truly open and rings beautifully ... It's not a term used in classic training but it's the word that many uses . What's so hard to understand ? Tbh Noones saying supported singing sucks . Sing resonant ! It's just a term we used to quickly identify the different situations .CHILL

Exactly right. If their video was trying to show a fuller sound vs a less full sound comparison, they did a pretty decent job. However, they tried to use it as a teaching tool to help people create that sound. I believe that the way they ask people to create that sound is harmful.

well the comparison is still correct as per the definitions given, for 'resonance' the sound to me, is from a lifted soft palate and is not projected through nose and generally lacks tension in the tongue and jaw.

The compilation isn't actually wrong. It just shows resonance and support in certain definitions, the definition he associates with what he hears. Most music teachers still argue on what resonant, and support, is.

Very well observed Sam. There are so many videos just throwing away too many terms inadequately and it really annoys me. There are people that learn from youtube videos and even comments so people should be more thoughtful and not just throw terms for ppl to be impressed by their knowledge. For example I see so many people saying stupid and unnecessary things for head voice and mixed voice it really is concerning. Thanks for being very honest and trying to give people reasonable explanations you're really incredible congratz.

You can tell that you are a legit music teacher because of the knowledge you have, you give full explanations and take your time telling the why's the what's and the how's. I am wanting to know more about singing techniques because I know that it is important for not only K-Pop idols to be good singing live but really any musicians and in order to understand and fully comprehend that you have to know at least something about how a person sings and achieves a certain sound or quality in their voices. I know Super Junior and EXO have really good techniques when it comes to singing live but I think that's because 1. they taught these kids since they were really young, 2. they have really amazing vocalists and 3. they have the right coaches and trainers to help them achieve this. You are a great teacher I can tell by how you are in this video and in other videos.

And here's when I realize why I need to know that open vowels have a higher F1 than close/mid close vowels and another stuff about acoustic phonetics 😂 love it!

i have actually watched the original video, and i was honestly confused about the definitions/ comparison. i am not musically knowledgeable but i had a subject on engineering school called acoustics and was taught about the nature and properties of sound, so i knew that their definition of resonance was a bit off, and i wasn't able to discern what they were trying to show. thank you so much for this reaction video, it really cleared up a lot of things to me 😀😀

It’s so nice to see a vocal teacher giving real criticism and actually telling the viewers facts, it seems like so many people are putting ‘vocal coach’ in their title when in fact they don’t even bring up half of the things said in your videos

Their voices had completely different qualities as well, the “resonant” ones were just deeper and a little more soulful while the “support” one had a lighter quality. I’d also say they sounded different to me because the “resonant” ones had more reverb, but that’s about it.

Hello, you probably won’t see my comment but when I was 14/15 I wanted to teach myself how to sing and ended up finding this thread on a K-Pop forum that was on vocal pedagogy. I became apart of that thread; however, we used to regurgitate a lot of nonsense (like was seen in the video above) and once I received classical vocal training I really started understanding that resonance should be treated as a spectrum and there’s not a dichotomy between support and resonance. Also there was a lack of understanding that someone projecting less volume is not necessarily a sure fire indicator of bad technique, and dropping the chest voice whilst ascending is a good thing. I eventually left that thread because Kpop vocal analysts - as they love to call themselves - love to be hostile. Anyway, I loved this video!

Well the kpop vocalist site do treat resonance as a spectrum, baekhyun sings entirely out his nose but he is still still classed as producing resonance because he produces nasal resonance. and I've never seen any analysis on the site say pulling chest voice up is good. in fact, it frequently says this is bad and leads to vocal damage. Basically I'm just saying the site aren't clueless and they've improved a lot since they scrapped their vocalist ranking system.

TV Sexy mhmm no this ain’t it. I always based the examples on what I had objectively read about their skill level (even if the vocal theory behind it was misguided). Not to push certain vocalists and intentionally try to make them appear better/worse than they are. And yes, K-Pop is very focused on visuals and dance, but there are still many great and decent vocalists in the genre worth talking about in relation to vocal technique.

And it seems like she really doesn't need to be hitting every high note with "resonance" since she's already a great singer for supporting the notes. It's funny how people are like "she's so good but her resonance is inconsistent"🙄 through this video I realized that it actually doesn't really matter, she's already in a league of her own in the 3rd gen💁💅🔥

You know what I loved about this: "They all sound fine. It's just that they have chosen to tell a story in a different way." Poetically said. After watching your videos it is really clear that the act of singing is a technique in itself, and if you have mastered it you can choose how you want your voice to be portrayed/vocalized/heard.

Sam you left out the most important part of the video!! To explain what the fuller and stronger tonal quality they are referring to is called “squillo” and is used in classical and opera singers for amplified projection

All voice is resonated but it doens't mean it has a ringing quality, a real squillo is ringing, not all resonance have this quality, just lik that compilation, they don't ring but they resonated, squillo in pop and contemporary singer is very rare, i think Whitney and Celine have a true ring in their vocal.

I think resonance is simply the wrong word for what the person who made the video describes. I see many people use resonance in the same way, and it honestly makes sense when you think of it as a full, open, forward sound that is only achieved by supporting, opening your throat and placing your voice in your mask. It’s the most pleasing to the ear, but you might not always want to resonate (in the sense that they mean). Of course you resonate even if you’re not doing that, which is why I think it’s the wrong word. Maybe, instead of resonance, they should say optimal placement or optimal sound or something like that. Anyway, I just think there’s a clear difference between the “supported” and the “resonance” examples in the video, so of course there is a difference in sound, and that’s what’s trying to be explained. By the way, I think your videos are great and very informative. Too many nowadays put vocal coach in their video titles without knowing anything about vocal technique, and just kiss ass to make sure they get views. It’s very refreshing to see you, and of course informative! I’m just a student, after all!

I am happy that have a genuine passion of sharing your knowledge and correcting the mistakes.

I really enjoy a lot of the discussion/content/focus on live vocal performances within the Kpop sphere, but personally I find the discourse on the "meh, their technique sucks" or "oh they were straining so they're bad" to be really close-minded or limiting. I like how your channel and this video in particular explains how things can be different but still good, how there's more than one way "to tell a story" as you put it. It's not that I think every sound is created equal, but there's a lot personal preferences that I think people online will try to pass off as a definitive standard of good or bad.

It seems like they’re saying that resonance is only the ‘ringy’ noise heard while singing. If that’s what they mean, then I heard this ‘ring’ in many of the ‘supported’ voices so their claims are really inconsistent.

Yo this was so fun to watch. I've seen this compilation before but I really could hardly differentiate? Thank you for explaining this well!!

I’m only six minutes into the video but I’ve only now realized that the creator of the original video intended to try and compare strictly classical pedagogy to these pop singers (hence the definition of resonance being used-the “true resonance” they’re describing being the ping/ring found in bel canto singing). and that “open throat shape” is literally just a lack of tension in the vocal tract (allowing for the space to be “open” so that steady stream of air can flow more freely). I haven’t finished the video yet and I see a lot of comments noting that sam’s progressively more critical of the video as it goes on. interesting. I’ll edit this comment once I’m finished with the video and have more to say lol EDIT: okay yeah it’s definitely just viewing kpop vocalists through classical pedagogy (i.e. especially through hearing that third harmonic, the “singer’s formant”, that sam describes at 11:52, which creates that ping in bel canto). idk how Sam was trained but I also come from a background of classical vocal pedagogy so I see what the creator was aiming to do with using “resonance” vs “support” as terms to compare techniques. this definitely should’ve been clarified in the original video for non-classically trained vocalists especially, and I agree that there definitely is a problem in perceiving a classically “resonant” voice as optimal for kpop, seeing as these are POP singers who don’t necessarily NEED to have the same resonance as a classical or operatic singer in that industry. but it’s interesting seeing a reaction/analysis on a video based in classical pedagogy from someone who doesn’t teach strictly bel canto technique. I wouldn’t say neither Sam nor the original video creator are right or wrong, it’s just two different techniques and different terms. essentially, they’re both right.
