If you really want to see the depth and breadth of Dio's talent I'd suggest "Mistreated" by Rainbow, live in Munich. To see a live performance of Dio that early in his career and see what he's truly capable of will blow your mind. Thank you so much for this!

Dio learned early on with a trumpet and it was a steppingstone for control of your diaphragm and his unique talents as a vocalist,he’s top five of ANY genre Who else could bring Sabbath back to life and kicking butt with the Heaven and Hell record and then the mob rules before striking out on his solo career and be incredibly great in all bands and once Holy Diver was released and sold in massive numbers he and his band put on a great show and stayed together through to Dream Evil. What a talent who really paid his dues for the success he achieved. God Bless and RIP to one of the best vocalist Ever!!!

Dio listened to a great deal of opera while growing up and was influenced vocally by American Mario Lanza. His first formal musical training began at age 5, learning to play the trumpet. Dio was allegedly offered a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music but did not take up the offer due to his interest in rock music. He instead attended the University at Buffalo. There, he played trumpet in the university's concert band. Dio claimed to have never received any vocal training. He instead attributed his singing ability to the use of breathing techniques he learned while playing trumpet.

Love Dio's vocals, especially during his Rainbow days with Ritchie Blackmore. Songs like "Stargazer" and "Catch the Rainbow" are fantastic songs showcasing his vocals. However his best Vocal Performance in my opinion is from the 1977 Munich Live Concert singing the song "Mistreated". ("Catch the Rainbow" is also excellent too). It is worth checking it out.

Ronnie grew up playing trumpet in Jazz groups (in the early to mid 50's when he was a kid - he was a big Harry James fan). That's where he learned how to support his voice - and his love for Jazz definitely informed his Metal style.

And to think that he actually reluctantly took the position as the singer in the band since no one else wanted it way back when he started out in the 50´s, i mean if anyone was made for singing it was Dio. He was the bassplayer then in the beginning but combined it with singing for about a decade and then concentrated on just singing. He was 50 or 51 in this video, its from 1993. An early inspiration was the opera singer Mario Lanza from what i remember but im sure he came across some Jazz at least before he discovered rockn roll in the 50´s and found his true musical genre. He was such a fanstastic live singer that i have had the fortune of seeing live in person a number of times, it really was his element. Rock In Peace Dio 🤘🤘
