The GOAT. RIP Ronnie. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
If you really want to see the depth and breadth of Dio's talent I'd suggest "Mistreated" by Rainbow, live in Munich. To see a live performance of Dio that early in his career and see what he's truly capable of will blow your mind. Thank you so much for this!

his version of Mistreated is absolutely incredibly and I even put it over Coverdales version (which is spectacular) . Dio could sing BLUES and metal and probably opera. One of the absolute best ever.

@@tombennettband1485 I believe you're correct. Coverdale's version is good but, for me, Ronnie's version is much better. Love Coverdale's stuff w/Jimmy.
Ronnie started his career as a doo wop singer in the 50's. Always my favorite metal singer.

Dio learned early on with a trumpet and it was a steppingstone for control of your diaphragm and his unique talents as a vocalist,he’s top five of ANY genre Who else could bring Sabbath back to life and kicking butt with the Heaven and Hell record and then the mob rules before striking out on his solo career and be incredibly great in all bands and once Holy Diver was released and sold in massive numbers he and his band put on a great show and stayed together through to Dream Evil. What a talent who really paid his dues for the success he achieved. God Bless and RIP to one of the best vocalist Ever!!!
Dio listened to a great deal of opera while growing up and was influenced vocally by American Mario Lanza. His first formal musical training began at age 5, learning to play the trumpet. Dio was allegedly offered a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music but did not take up the offer due to his interest in rock music. He instead attended the University at Buffalo. There, he played trumpet in the university's concert band. Dio claimed to have never received any vocal training. He instead attributed his singing ability to the use of breathing techniques he learned while playing trumpet.
Keep in mind, this was an older Ronnie James Dio... and this performance was at the end of the set. Also, Jeff Pilson on backup vocals & bass.

Just imagine if he actually had been there live
Ronnie was a gifted trumpet player and earned a scholarship to a music academy. I think it explains his incredible breathe control.
The One And Only, Dio´s voice is immortal. That was the last song of the actual set.
Listen to him sing the song Mistreated, live in 1977 when he was in the band Rainbow. Video of it on KZread. He's arguably at his vocal peak in it, just astounding performance. PLEASE watch it.

Need to listen to Rainbow's Stargazer.
Is there anyone better than Dio? He can do whatever, whenever, without trying
You have to check out man on the silver mountain live 1977. His vocals are AMAZING!! PLEASE🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Love Dio's vocals, especially during his Rainbow days with Ritchie Blackmore. Songs like "Stargazer" and "Catch the Rainbow" are fantastic songs showcasing his vocals. However his best Vocal Performance in my opinion is from the 1977 Munich Live Concert singing the song "Mistreated". ("Catch the Rainbow" is also excellent too). It is worth checking it out.
Ronnie grew up playing trumpet in Jazz groups (in the early to mid 50's when he was a kid - he was a big Harry James fan). That's where he learned how to support his voice - and his love for Jazz definitely informed his Metal style.
Absolutely one of my all time favorite singers, composers!! He is missed!
Stargazer with Rainbow is ridiculous

It really is. Stargazer was one of the all time great vocal performances, period, regardless of genre. It's absurdly great. Truly amazing. But then again, so was Ronnie, in general.
And to think that he actually reluctantly took the position as the singer in the band since no one else wanted it way back when he started out in the 50´s, i mean if anyone was made for singing it was Dio. He was the bassplayer then in the beginning but combined it with singing for about a decade and then concentrated on just singing. He was 50 or 51 in this video, its from 1993. An early inspiration was the opera singer Mario Lanza from what i remember but im sure he came across some Jazz at least before he discovered rockn roll in the 50´s and found his true musical genre. He was such a fanstastic live singer that i have had the fortune of seeing live in person a number of times, it really was his element. Rock In Peace Dio 🤘🤘
I saw him many times in concert and he had some of the greatest visual pyrotechnics and props ever.
You just can't go wrong with Dio. He was by far one of the best, in terms of power, expression and diction, not to mention range. If you haven't heard "Stargazer" by Rainbow, then you must, or Elf, "Wonderworld".

Great songs, and a great call out for the song "Wonderworld", it is a fantastic song
Yes! He's much more than a vocalist. He's a musician and very educated man. And you hear it through his music.
Stargazer was the first time I heard Dio perform. He is absolutely timeless. Thanks for the PDF!
I wish he would have used the performance from the Spectrum in 1984. Unreal!
Couple suggestions for ya Opeth is great keyboard player is an amazing backup vocalist Anything Mike Patton you will be blown away at his range vocally and multiple genres
Dio played trumpet as a child. That's where his breath control comes from and probably where that jazz influence came from.
I saw him way back in the 80’s with Rainbow and I wish that I could have seen him perform in his later years before he passed. Clearly he still had it. 🙌🤘
The old Rainbow 77 is stellar for Dio. Vinnie on drums

He's a great storyteller
His original guitarist on the first three 'Dio' albums Vivian Campbell, kicked ass on the guitar parts. RJD did have some 50s and 60s recordings that were doowop and R&B You should definitely hear Heaven and Hell tho and anything off Holy Diver

Vivian Campbell never gets the plaudits he deserves and one of the best of his era me thinks.
He was ridiculously good live! One of the rare singers who I always thought was far better live than in the studio!
I had the distinct pleasure of seeing Dio in a small club outside of Seattle in I think 2000, on his Magica tour. There was only about 50 people there. I stood by the bar, it was only about 12 feet away from the stage. He put on the same show he would have in front of a stadium, it was incredible. We even traded the horns a couple times \m/. One of the best shows I've ever seen.

wow. I saw almost the same, but in sweden... maybe 200-300 people. Åkersberga (outside Stockholm.) can't recall the tour, but Bob daisy was on bass.
He is a GOAT!!! 🔥
Very good analysis by John, not only about Dio's great singing but also of the band
Agree with the last comment, Dio in 'Rainbow' is the GOAT. He was great in Elf, Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, Dio, even his 1950's doo wop, but his Rainbow days were epic. Blackmore and Dio as a writing team was yet to even be matched in greatness. And his vocals, they speak fir themselves.
WE ROCK.....🤘🤘🤘
The master. R.I.P. Ronnie.
4:32 About that, Ronnie had opera and blues influences on his background. He never had vocal classes but he used to play trumpet.
Oh the master!!😍Just so unique! I have gotta see if you have done "Stargazer" with him/Rainbow yet? That one is the high of all highs! Thank you, sir! 🙂 /New Sub
Hi John, Amsterdam calling. Since you're back with song reactions, perhaps consider a live performance where the "backing" vocalists get to shine (and then there's Floor of course). From the legendary Ayreon Universe Live show, here's: "Ayreon - Everybody Dies (Ayreon Universe)". Cheers from Amsterdam!
Ok only a minute in and I know I like you it's a kick ass riff. I hope you will consider reacting to Dio in the band Rainbow the song Stargazer...please?
You have to listen to Dio singing stargazer with rainbow

Thanks, I enjoyed it!
A band call Liliac has done a cover of this at a request from Wendy Dio. The band is five siblings and the singer is female. Vinnie Appice Dio's old drummer gave here the nickname MeloDio. Here real name is Melody. She is a big fan of Dio which can be seen in the video and she has a powerful voice.
Heard of Nightwish? If not I think you would enjoy listening to them. Now that is a voice to write home about. Hahahaha. Ghost love score, live at Wacken 2013 is a perfect song to start with.
Saw ronnie dio in 83 man with the original lineup what a superb show met the band after the show what a warm group of people I met awesome band never forget that day wonderful memories
The world is a much darker place without Ronnie James Dio in it. If he was still with us, he'd be 82 this year and I have no doubt that he'd still be killing it on stage.
DOI HAD ZERO LESONS TO SING. HE PLAYED TRUMPET GROWING UP
During the fills and the breaks they always keep the energy pushing....the drummer and bass have to be before the down.... Just 🔥
Young man Ronnie ronnie got his vocal breathing technique because he was a classically trained trumpet player. You heard me right yes I like jazz too
Only Dio...
The phrasing point is interesting as in catch the rainbow in the '77 concert mentioned below he adds to the recorded version and it is a great addition. Look out for the phrasing 'against the lace'.
Great reaction. Jazz is cool, so are most other music genres. But metal stole my heart over 50 years ago. Dio is one reason why.
This is as good as it gets. The peak.
John, the musical sense that you referred to may possibly be due to Dio beginning with playing the saxophone and bass. Dio said those instruments led him to teach himself how to sing.
Don't talk to strangers, live Spectrum. Best thing on KZread.
He’s amazing!
All Hail the King ! 🤘
Dio is the greatest singer in the history of the world 🤘🤘
Do not know if you will see this but, I (we) would be interested to see you react to Tesseract legion, Dan is a phenomenal singer, and the band is next level. One of those bands that need more recognition... Great job btw, I appreciate your passion for music.
He started as a trumpet player, hours a day playing jazz and originally wanted to be a jazz player.
Of course he is jazzy, his up bringing was Italian opera and jazz. Mario Lanza was a huge influence for Ronnie.
Ronnie Dio and the red caps- An Angel is missing. Very old 50s sounding from his ban in the 60s . It’s on KZread
Gods never die. RIP Ronnie!
There is a Female lead singer that loves Dio and her and her band covered a song of his and it is Amazing ! The song is called Holy Diver and the band is called Liliac?. Their a Family band ! I can guarantee you Dio would be proud of them! Please react to them!
great to see the detail you have in this breakdown. Would love to hear some John Cowan and his song dark as a Dungeon
4:50 wow what a great insight, u are right, he swings between the phrases he sings, he was the best, the greatest! Rock on !
I SEEN DIO LIVE IN 1980 AND 1981 WITH SABBATH
This is such a fantastic song ! May I suggest you check out the cover of this song by the young family band Liliac . The did this song at the request of Wendy Dio for the Dio cancer benefit a few years ago . Vinny Apicce nicknamed Melody the singer MeloDio !
yeah, this is in my vinyl collection, and it cost me $7.99 at Tower Records for $7.99 according to the price tag that's on the cover of the cellophane wrapper on it...
I can tell by the look on your face.......you're gonna want to listen to Elf and the first three Rainbow albums. Absolutely essential listening for any vocalist.

Agree, Rainbow is a must (especially the Dio years) and Elf had some great songs "Wonderworld", "Streetwalker", "Nevermore", "Happy"...good call out.
Burton Cummings - Stand Tall (1976) "the voice". before all that came later.
Dio is Dio. RIP legend! @John, have you ever tried Middle-Eastern metal? Try some Orphaned Land!
He was a crooner in the fifties, with a band called "Vegas Kings"
the godfather of metal
Lets not forget this is the older Dio. He is far from 20 something here and still kickin ass!!!
Ronnie, one of the best singers in metal🇸🇪
He is Not a young man with this performance! Only more incredible.
This is a great lineup…Love Tracy G’s sound!
more dio pleaaaase!!!
This isn't even DIO at he absolute best...but he was that good that you'll never find a bad performance, his voice did lower as he got older but never lost it's power.
I Think the Sabbath Years were My Favorite. But Rainbow had some Damn Special Songs. Still...My All time favorite singer. And what a Great Song Writer. RIP
great reaction. But I'd go for the 1984 live performances - spectrum etc. specially for the drums and guitar. and the voice, well.
Dio is always amazing … but watch his younger stuff … he can blow the roof off
Ronny wasn’t afraid to do his own thing, lack of top 40 hits be damned. Today you can make millions on Spotify and never be heard on the radio. Those fortunes are built on Ronny’s sacrifices.
FYI, Ronnie started out playing trumpet before moving to bass.
Need do do “All the fools sail away”!!!!!
Dio was a small guy but he sang like he was 10 foot tall...
Dio and Geoff Tate my favorite all time vocalists.
Thank you
Try Miljenko Metijevic (Steelheart) Never Let You Go, Everybody Loves Eileen. Or perhaps Rob Halford (Judas Priest) Blood Red Skies(the Epitaph tour)Two vocalists who are up there with Ronnie. Hope to see at least one of these masters on your channel soon. Love your passion. Keeps me coming back for more.
🤘RIP~DIO🤘
Would have been better 20 years earlier, before they had to tune down... But Dio is forever "the man" (on the silver mountain)🤣
Dig into his first record its jazzy 60's pop stuff.
Holy diver, hes listening to the king of metal !!
He was a big fan of Mario Lanza. It shows.
Dio debuted on record in the late 50s.

Great songs from back then "Walking in Different Circles", "Blue Days Blue Night"
RONNIE JAMES DIO had no formal vocal training. He was gifted by a higher power!! Perhaps his trumpet playing as a youth, could have helped. He sang in ELF, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH, DIO, HEAVEN HELL, for me, he was the greatest heavy metal front man of all time!!! RIP RJD!!!!!
Nice
