Sissel is wearing the white version of the Bergen bunad since she is from Bergen. A bunad is a traditional Norwegian costume most often used at celebrations. Each region in Norway has its own bunad design. So you know where a woman is from by looking at the bunad patterns. Bunad's are still very popular today and especially used on our national day, May 17th.

This Norwegian national romantic at the peak. Edvard Grieg kiked a lot in the mountain. The very high notes sounds very similar to how the "seterjenter" calls for the cowes. "Seter" is a mountain based summer farm where the farmer tok their animals in the summertime. This summerfarms were often run by women. Typically the called the cows, who was walking freely in the nature, back to the farm in the afternoon.

Very nice reaction🤗 This is my favourite song by Edvard Grieg, and she sings it so effortlessly and beautiful 😍 She was only 22 years old in this concert 👍 She’s from the same city as I am, Bergen, and it’s the same city Aurora lives in ❤️ I remember watching her before she was famous, she sang in a choir on a tv show called “syng med oss” (sing with us). I always watched it, and I “fell in love” with her in that show😍 I don’t know if you’ve heard of our famous opera singer Solveig Kringlebotn? I sang in a choir with her when we were youths. Once we were a week in England, and I especially remember when Solveig sang “Solveigs Sang” in a cathedral, everyone in the church cried cause it was so beautiful. A moment I’ll never forget ❤️

As every other Norwegian in the comments, I adore Sissel. She somehow manages to cross the generational gap and be adored by young and old alike. A nugget of info that's beside the musical: Her outfit in this is the bunad, the traditional folk costume that can vary a lot in apperance depending on which town or municipality you or your family is from. It's most common for the women though there are many bunads for men as well. It's a common practice for girls to inherit the bunad of their grand- or great grandmother when they are old enough to fit in it with some adjustments. Also probably a financial decision as well as a respectful one, as bunads range in price from 500-2500€ since each is sown by hand and takes around a year to make. A lot of money for an outfit most only wear once per year (constitution day, May 17th) and often in baptisms :) I couldn't tell you which version of it Sissel is wearing here, there's 450 different types currently, but since she's from Bergen it's safe to assume the design comes from that area ^^

Thank you. I always enjoy your reactions. This was in 1991. Sissel was 21/22 years old. She has sung Solveigs Song many times since, all of which are a masterpiece. After listening to 10 plus (all great) sopranos sing, I am confident in asserting that she is the best. She is so exceptionally talented that she is always naturally & masterfully effortless. She has a dimension that others do not. The last performance of this song for the public I know is when she was 50, which she seemed to have sung in Korea: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqZp2Mefk8eeo5c.html.

So glad you did this reaction. All the hill/mountain walking Siss did as a child pays off here. Yes, the tempo is among the slowest, so airflow demands are greater for those long lines but she has the lung capacity. In my long life I've heard 100s of Solveigs sung mostly by voices from the world of opera. However, Siss is Solveig here (30 years ago) She sang Solveig many times in her career (some on KZread) and her Japan performance was her most operatic, her voice pure opera. I think music snobbery & disdain from the classical world has punished Sissel. That she sings anything she likes, goes against her in some music quarters. She's not opera (thank God, there is enough) but her lyric soprano is like a balm, classical in style. Her spirituality is a bonus.

Sissel does a lovely live version of Crying in the Chapel. A couple of duets she has done are well worth a listen. Where the lost ones go, with Espen Lind. When you tell me that you love me, with Jose Carreras. I'll sing of love, with Darryl Tookes is a real favorite of mine. Many of her songs in her native language are always worth a listen. And I think a recent release she did, I rest my eyes. A lovely , with a beautiful smile who enjoys performing .

Big embrace to you Valerie. I share the same fascination of Sissel, her calmness, her sweetness and her sense of inner joyfullness that fills up the space around her. My father, coming from Bergen and 50 year old choir singer, always said to me (danish): Remember that the norweigian language like italian is a singing language! It has so much melodi in its tune and the vocal letters are so open and forward in the mouth, that it facilitates singing !. Looking at your chosen clip with Sissel you a) come so close to Grieg, Bergen, norweigian mountain and valley tunes and westcoast soul and b) enriches everybody with your own interpretation, knowlegde, sweetness and feelings. Love you, Trygve

You talked about translations of this song, but I'm sure you know this is the original - in the original language? From Edvard Griegs Peer Gynt suite composed for the play (Peer Gynt) by fellow Norwegian poet Henrik Ibsen. Sissel seems to be around 16-17 years old here. (?).

The original (text) would most likely be in Danish or a Norwegian form very close to Danish called Riksmål. This performance seems to use modern Norwegian. Sissel is 21 or 22 here. This was recorded in 1991 and she is born in 1969.

She would have just turned 22 during this time. King Hararald's benediction was on June 23th and Sissel is born on June 24, and I believe this was after that. She was fairly well known from around the age of 16 as she appeared on tv several times.
