Ruben is a 20 year young singer/songwriter (mainly in Dutch). This song Floor is singing is written by Ruben (in Dutch) about his parents' divorce and how he felt/feels about it at that time and maybe even still. Floor, with some help from her sister Irene, translated the lyrics to English and made the song her own. Her delivery is so beautiful and emotional that it hit Ruben hard and made him cry. That's how up close and deeply personal this show can get. All the emotions you see with all participants are genuinely heartfelt and raw. The amount of respect all performers put into their delivery of a personal song like that is immense. That's the beauty of this show and its format. It's all about love and respect.

The song is about his parent's breakup. During the show he said that that hit him very hard and he only just got himself back together about a year before. Floors sister Irene, also a metal vocalist, helped translate the song from Dutch to English

What she really showed this episode is a very hard skill to master: restraint. She really serves the song. Yeah, she has way more power, a much larger range, but she knows what the song needs and sticks to that. This is one of the reasons she isn't your ordinary highly skilled singer. She's a musician, a storyteller, someone who sees why and how songs work and what they need. A beast of a voice with the brains to keep up.

Well, I can tell you a lot here about Ruben and the background of this song, but when you watch the show it will become clear to you. However I can tell you up front that Ruben is a very emotional person and as the benjamin of the show looks up to the more experienced singers like Floor, Henk, Samantha, Tim and Rolf and he was very nervous about him being the centerpoint of this show.

We also have a awesome country/rock singer called Ilse deLange who signed a 5 record contract in the US that launched her career in the Netherlands. Here she is one our biggest stars. a great song to take a look is "Miracle". The song was used in a move called "Bride flight". The director was a great fan of her but did not have a lot money to buy the rights so he went over to her and asked her if he could use one of her songs. She said no problem pick any song you like. He then asked if she had song that she had never released . She asked him to tell her what the movie was about and she suggested this song to him. When he heard it he immediately fell in love the song. He asked her why she never released and she said she did not think the song was good enough. He said to her something like "You rebellious standards for which songs are good enough". After the song became a great hit it was released on her next album. :-) kzread.info/dash/bejne/moOeqLN8d66qiqQ.html

Thank you very much. I thought that I was imagining that there was a very slight uncertainty in her voice in the beginning. But it really never takes a long time for her to get comfortable and then nail it. Floor is truly able to get into the character and through it tell a story; and she adapts to it her posture, gestures, facial expressions, well, her appearance overall. It is, of course, also about knowing her voice so well (as she does) to know how to create a particular sound with a certain quality and make it look very easy. So many variables. Have a wonderful day, Valerie! :-)

My guess is that it is about the right balance. Floor usually remains faithful to the original mood of the song. Then she imprints her own personal singing style onto the song, which she is covering, instead of trying to follow somebody else´s singing style down to a T which could be a very unnatural singing style for her and it would show.

It has a Joni Mitchell vibe too in places. Personally i think most female singers are a dime a dozen. But sometimes we get someone who just stands out, and oddly enough a large percentage of these can be found within the country genre. Now i'm not really a fan of country, but i do appreciate a good song when i hear one. And it's really all about the emotion you put into a song. Singers like Anita Baker, Sade, Joni and even Dolly Parton knows how to do that. And Floor has it too in abundance :)

Floor tonight with this mournful and soulful sound reminded me if I closed my eyes of the great Country singer, Patsy Cline and her many verses of the laments of missed loves in her short life before her untimely death in a plane crash at age 30. If you listen to I Fall to Pieces (kzread.info/dash/bejne/m6mOts1qmMfWfdY.html) or her She's Got You (kzread.info/dash/bejne/f4t3t8pvpMmdgKQ.html) you can feel (you always experience Floor not merely hear her) that sorrow and emotion. I picture Floor in a small cabaret singing this to a roomful of the brokenhearted who let their tears dilute their drinks as they try and drown their sorrow!!! I would assume that singing to a small group of your peers (professional singers) in a little studio that is broadcast over the air and being recorded for distribution all over the Internet would make anyone nervous, but once Floor gets going she is so in her environment it all comes so naturally to her. Her fans feel vindicated tonight that she truly is a Valkyrie Goddess of vocals and somewhere Patsy is smiling down on this great presentation. Great reaction and even better explanation of the Country/Blues that really is at the heart of most Rock music in one form or another.

I think Floor is one of the few singers who dares risk tone stability issues when expressing vulnerability, suitable to her storytelling. She dares this in more songs, like the start of How's the Heart Live, Dead Boys Poem live, Shallow, but also in Daydream and Hope live. I feel like it is not nerves but a calculated risk in the same time as a connection to the words and song meaning. It convinces her audience but sometimes makes the pro reactors focussing on a possible sense of insecurity 😊

Interesting reaction and take on the performance, entertaining as always. Not sure I heard country in there, the way you did. I guess everyone perceives through the lens of their experience, and through mine I heard a nice "singer-songwriter" ballad, appropriate since that what Ruben does. Your commentary about Floor perhaps being a bit hesitant, breathier at the start, holding back her power - I think you may be dealing with an incomplete sample of her work. I noticed you have not reacted to any songs written by or for Floor, yet. All the Nightwish so far has been from pre-Floor era - she just made those particular songs her own signatures in live performances. If you took songs from their last album, one written with Floor in mind, the one stand out would be the dialed-down, light, delicately non-operatic sounding Floor. To great effect, in my opinion, as it creates a magnificent contrast when she switches into her power mode, often in the same song. Nightwish's songwriter writes song at once with the whole orchestration in his head, with his singers as instruments within it. With Floor, they toured together first, so he had a chance to figure out how he wanted to use her, and in that album they explored those lower parts of her range (there a was a "making of" documentary). Songs like Elan, Shudder Before the Beautiful, My Walden, or Alpenglow are great examples. And then there are the gorgeous ballads she wrote during the After Forever era, e.g. Cry With a Smile, although that one gets up there. I actually thought Floor was slightly less in control with the Spanish song from 2 episodes back, as she seemed breathier than usual. Maybe unfamiliar song in fully unfamiliar language had something to do with that? Since you have not watched the latest episode, I won't spoil it, except to say that she transformed Ruben's original quite a bit, so perhaps she needed a few moments to get into the newness of it

PageMonster Pussycat wasn’t part of the Eurovision Song Contest with that song, and I’m not sure if they ever participated at all. The Dutch band that *did* participate (and won!) around that time - in 1975 - was Teach-In with ‘Ding-A-Dong.’ :-)

As you seem thrilled by Beste Zangers, I would recommend to you the performance of O'G3ne and their rendition of the Emili Sande song Clown, which they performed on one of the episodes of Beste Zangers 2016. Would love to introduce you to O'G3ne greatly appreciate your reaction. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mKCcxM5yp8LbnJM.html

It aint country music, it is Dutch local people music. We have that for ages, you guys call it "country", we call it "levens lied". This song was about the devorce of Rubens parents, he learned on his school to write stories and turn them in lyrics. That way he was able to handle the devorce... Great reaction

I think this is folk music, the story telling music that's quiet popular in the Netherlands. The lyrics are very important. Country music is developed out of the music from many cultures that were in the VS in the beginning. Every culture brought it's own music. Also lots of Dutch people there, so maby that's why it sounds country to you?

I agree. Country music has it's roots in folk music. Lots of settlers came to the US and brought their folk traditions with them. Country music as a term really came about when the recording industry came about. But the roots are the same.

Country is basically folk music, so it would've been brought to America by European settlers. And Britain has some really good country acts, such as The Shires. 😉

PageMonster Interesting. I’ve listened to this performance a few times and I never thought of it as country until Valerie’s comments. It seems more folk to me, but perhaps that’s because they have the same root as you suggest.

Just watch her a few minutes before her very first show . Her face is as pale as paper but that is al visible gone the moment she steps on the stage.

5:15 Sorry, but why do Americans always think their country is the basis for everything? America is younger than Europe. We don’t need to look at you musically, especially not american country. This is typical folk music for us. It has been around for a while longer than your country. Of course, music changes over time and approaches other cultures. It is inevitable. But you are not the inventor of it. 😁
