Great to see you react to Hua Chenyu, he’s truly a musical genius and loves to compose and rewrite his music. He’s young but very intelligent & knows exactly how he wants his music & his voice to sound. He’s very detailed and directs the sound engineer on what to do so he’s really his own “sound guyI” so to speak! I heard him for the first time while watching the Singer competition the year after I first saw Dimash on there. That show has some amazing talent! Dimash and Hua Hua have now become my two favorite musicians! Can’t wait to see Dimash in New York in December! You should listen to the song “ Giant Deer “ by Hua Chenyu, it’s an absolutely beautiful song and I know you will love it! Always make sure to watch Hua Hua’s eng sub channel! Well not sure if you saw his interview regarding his youth, which explains his angst as a child and growing up

For Hua Chenyu songs there is a channel called "Hua Chenyu Eng sub" which is very handy. For this song they have a a video with a pre-stage interview as an intro, which ties in his childhood experiences with the emotions expressed in this song (though he didn't write the song).

R.Gray it’s actually a mix with his own lyricless song, that was literally lyricless. It was his debut song or rather his auditioning song. Also how his fan base became the Martians and his concerts named Mars etcetera. That lyricless song was written in his childhood when he struggled with himself and he used that emotion to rearrange fake monk. (You could say it was just the emotion that he used and not the lyricless song because he used the emotion to write the lyricless song in the first place)

"Child" and "I don`t care" are my favorite

He took the pain of the song to its extreme. Shouting is the final struggle and redemption. He's the best singer I've ever seen. And then, he did this. 🤯 I thought to myself, just how versatile and artistic can he get? This performance was very refreshing and different, in a good way.

Prodigiously talented, I have never seen a singer as gifted as him in the Chinese music scene. Virtually every reactor comments that his voice sounds more like an instrument than sheer vocals and he can perform immensely well in almost every genre you think possible. You can never envisage what his performance will be as he's just too diversified in his singing abilities. What else do you want?

What a first song to hear of Hua Chenyu. lol He can be intense. He's the real deal. He comes from a very personal expression and performance. A variety. Very talented young man. Oh my, did you just open an endless can of creative worms. Hua Chenyu is probably the most creative musician I have seen in a generation or more. Dimash and Hua are my two favorites. Both have incredible ranges (Dimash has an incredibly wide range, but Hua is no slouch either) and both are incredibly creative in their presentation. As you noted, one of the aspects where Hua really shines is in his use of the voice as an instrument, with various musical dynamics, tonalities, and textures to his voice. He has stated he sees the voice as part of the overall musical presentation, an as such is a companion to the overall instrumentation, not above it. Secondly, is he is a consummate actor. Here he is a madman. Other times he'll be a child, another a demigod, another a rap star, rockstar, broadway, etc. He's incredibly comfortable on stage and plays to concert venues up close to 100,000 capacity. He does it all. One note. Always if you can watch his performances with subtitles. The lyrics of the songs he does, most of the time run very deep. Recommended songs - pretty much anything from his Singer 2018 is a great showcase. Try Child, Dad I'm home (if you watch with subtitles if you don't cry a little, you're dead), I don't care, Flammable and Explosive, Nunchucks, Light Year Away. In short, I think you'll fall in love with this young gentleman's artistic endeavors. Oh and finally, like Dimash, they are both genuinely sweet and humble human beings. What's not to like?

Hua hua is one such singer who can convey the feelings and emotions of a song to any and everyone irrespective of language , region barriers .. His vocal techniques are really frightening though .. I feel like he might loose his voice this way but that's just his way . I really enjoyed the parts you explained and broke down his song . got a better understanding and also a relateable feel which i got when i first heard this song . Okay! Time to check out your other videos!

Thank you for an excellent analysis! Indeed Hua is using some unorthodox placement but he is more dedicated to get across the message and give the audience an unique experience than to be the best vocalist. He stated in an interview that he is more focused on expressing the emotions and if this will allow him to sing only for a certain period of time he's satisfied that during the best period of his life did the most beautiful thing and will not regret leaving the stage. His mindset and life philosophy are unusual for someone in his 20's and we love him for that! I loved the fact you highlighted all the instruments hidden in his voice, thank you so so much for that! Agreed. He is a composer first and he happens to have the ability to sing as well! He stated that he only started to sing when he found instruments alone could not express the emotions he wanted to include in his composed music!

I think he tries to add more dramatic emotion to the song because this song expresses a lonely man's struggle and confusion about love. He added some performance elements to his voice and his songs. By the way, this song is from Cui Jian who is Father of Chinese Rock :)

Chinese put given name after the surname, so Hua is his surname and Chenyu is actually his first name:))) For me, his 4 perfect performances on the Singer's stage regarding vocal techniques are "Fake Monk", "Child", "I Don't Care" and "Wayfarer". "Fake Monk" is the most ARTISTIC and DARK performance he made. He rearranged the original song (a very typical Chinese 80s Rock song) with only one piano, one vocal, one performer acting. This song related to his lonely childhood a lot, he explained in the pre-stage interview that why he chose to rearrange the song like this. "Child" is a more "normal" song, shows his higher notes and amazing transition from belting to falsetto. Please react to "Child" for next Hua Chenyu reaction!!! And yes you are right, Hua's idea is to play his voice like instruments. He even mimicking ancient Chinese instrument "Xun" (a globular flute made of clay) during his song. I've never seen anyone applying unexpectable tones in such an artistic way. Hua isn't just an amazing vocalist but also a musical genius.

Almost all performances of Hua Chenyu are incredible, and he has a lot lot lot song performances! I recomend 'Qi Tian - Wukong', from Singer 2018, he showed fantastic skills, u will be impressed, and the lyrics are amazing!

The flute was Hua Hua's (his nickname, but I believe Hua is his surname) first instrument as a child, and I think he likes to emulate it. There's one song where he sounds like a Pan/Native American/maybe Chinese reed flute.

looking forward, both songs are totally different Hua Chenyu but angel and boss all are attracted. all his performance are valuable and worth to analysis.

Strongly recommend 'madhouse','bullfighting' and 'I really want to love the world' of Hua Chenyu! Thess songs were wrote for humanity or mental health. I was stroke by his powerful music and great performance art every time I watch the lives.

Christi, I would love to share some thoughts on this song, Hua, and echoing some of your thoughts: 1. I am concerned sometimes, too, with what he does with his voice. You can tell it is not good for his chords. Thankfully he does it rarely. 2. Every song I have ever heard from Hua makes me think, "I have never heard anything like this." He is one of a kind, and my 2nd favorite performer behind Dimash. 3. "Watchin' you." his name pronunciation 😁 4. You are right about him using his voice as an instrument. That is why I REALLY hope you do "Child" by him. Easily my favorite song by him, and prepare for chills. He also has his own interpretation of "Heaven" from Tengger, that you reacted to. Mesmerizing and angelic. 4. I love what you have done with the channel. In one of his interviews Huahua said that the vocal coach he once had when he was younger tried to make him change the way he sing, but after he changed it he doesn’t feel the same way singing the songs he wrote, so now he is doing it his way (๑˙ー˙๑). He also said that he would be fine with it even if it means that he would only be able to sing for 40 years.

Ya, u have explained the point very well. He is very focus on using vocal and voice to tell story rather than lyrics only. He has many style of songs and most of them are very emotional, possitive or negative emotion. This one is a very depressed one which link to his childhood bad memory ... So...

he really learn his voice very much. if he compose a song that he cannot sing, he will try to learn and practice until he can perform it

Rolling the Deep is probably her best with the way she puts so much character into every word while covering so many genres. If this is the first reaction you have done on Hua Hua, you are definitely in for a treat! I found out about him over a year ago and haven't been the same since! He is now hands down my favorite performer -- even above Dimash -- and that's saying a lot since I am a 60yo, bald, white guy from the Deep South of the United States! His voice as a condiment? Well! Haven't heard that before! That sure is distinctive! He is a consummate performer! I am glad that I have become his follower or what is better known as a "Martian!" If you see the back story interview in which Hua explains why he sings this song....it is truly heart breaking....he came from a loveless lonely childhood and this song screams all the pain out that the felt as a child......if I had not listened to that interview, that tragic story....the song would have impacted me still, but it truly crushed me to the core because I knew the story behind this song......

A lot of vocal coaches always say something about the crispness/harsh throat kinda thing, but he’s actually a rocker that way of singing doesn’t effect his vocals at all! He’s actually very experienced, it can be very damaging to your voice and vocals if you don’t know how to do it and if you don’t practice, yes. But he always does that and can go to a high note incredibly fast without any problems. Normally you would have problem with making a clear high note immediately after that or feel a little pain in the throat, but he’s fine.

without subtitles especially with a song like this, you lose 80% of enjoyment. Understanding his words is crucial

Clearly his biggest talent lies in composing. Every time so interesting. I dont think he really identifies himself mainly as a singer but as a composer and performer. Singing is just a part of it. Something he experiments with like Tom waits if I should think of a western musician who is somehow in a similar direction from the standpoint of having a story to tell, and the emotional expression is everything using his voice as an instrument and not always in the most healthy way, to be able to tell his story. I think this performance should destroy all prejudices about where China is today artistically and culturally. Very captivating
