I am so happy that you found your way to Voctave. May I suggest that you check out their Great Movie Medley? It's a collection of John Williams music and it's basically your entire childhood condensed into one video. It's one of those feelgood videos that I can rewatch again and again and never get tired of. I would love to hear your thoughts about it.

All of the ladies of Voctave are spectacular, but Kate Lott is a treasure. Jeremy struggled to get through rehearsal because he kept stopping in awe whenever Kate hit a high note. All of the members would laugh at/with him. There is some video of this if you care to look.

Agree. Even though he’s moved onto Matt. The wizard of Ahhs needs to be heard. What Todrick and Pentatonix’s were able to do with an old movie and modernize it with current pop songs to tell the story was genius. Plus Kirsties musical theatre ability really shines in that one too.

👉👉PENTATONIX is my #1 and Voctave #2 ABSOLUTE favorite A capella groups! Jeremy Lewis "was" Kirstie's boyfriend/fiancee, They were about to get married in 2017 and he cheated on her. That guy was a jerk! Thankfully Kirstie met her true soulmate soon after Ben Housdorff who was hired to be PENTATONIX photographer/videographer while they were in tour. Ben had previously worked with Scott on a project so he knew him. Ben and Kirstie got close on tour and then off tour. They married this past April 4-21-2024 they have a 2 year old baby girl Elliana

Thank you for sharing this!! Also some context: almost all of their charts are arranged in-house by Tenor Jamey Ray who is singing in this video. He’s the founder of their group and I believe his arranging skills play a large role in their success. Thanks for watching them!

I just had the privilege to see Voctave in concert a few months ago and the honest to goodness truth is, they sound live exactly the way they sound in the videos and even a couple of times, they put their mics on the floor and sang with no electronic help whatsoever. VOCTAAAAVVEEEE!!!! YEESSSS!!!! Ahem, I mean... so glad you're getting to Voctave, I quite enjoy them. 🤪 If Geoff elicits "bass stank face", Kate elicits "my soul just got shocked out of my body for a moment" face. And just as with Geoff, it never ceases to surprise and amaze, no matter how many times you hear it. Voctave's arrangements are always top notch and being a full ensemble, the wall of sound they lay down is a perfectly tuned blanket of happy. Their control and blend is insane. And speaking of control, Kate can hit those crazy high notes QUIETLY when needed. As a vocalist, it blows my mind because as rare as it is to be able to sing that high, to be able to do it quietly... daaaaaang! I'm sure you'll get to an example of that at some point. Oh, and your face at those last few chords the first time through had me dying! 🤣

I love your analysis of Voctave. They have so many songs you would love. Jamey Ray, one of the members, arranges all their songs, but he is also a music professor at Rollins College on the north side of Orlando. He arranges the vocal parts for the individual singers voice knowing their range so he can get the most out of each one. He’s a masterful arranger. All of the members sing professionally and are current or former cast members at Walt Disney World. Several have solo careers and have sung or do sing in other groups at Disney and in Orlando. Many still sing a cappella with the Voices of Liberty, who do the pre-show at The American Adventure pavilion at Disney’s EPCOT. Please review more of their songs. A couple that you might like include The Great Movie Medley, The Prince of Egypt Medley, The Disney Princess Medley, The Heroes & Villains Medley, Someday, Carol of the Bells of Notre Dame Medley, and Where Are You Christmas?

Great reaction Sir Hairless and a good introduction to Voctave. My only problem with this one is I can't bear Jeremy Lewis because he cheated on Kirstie when they were engaged and I think he loves himself too much. He thinks his voice is spectacular and it doesn't really do it for me, though I will concede it blends well with Kirstie's. I do love this medley and I think Kirstie has a very good Disney princess voice but I always feel in this one that she's just a bit too overpowered by those phenomenal female singers from Voctave! The balance feels a bit off to me and she's a little lost in the mix. Great arrangement though and the ending is fantastic. As I think one of the other reactors mentioned, Kirstie was well shot of Jeremy and soon met and fell in love with Ben Hausdorff, Pentatonix's videographer. They have a beautiful toddler, Elliana, and they got married just last month so I suppose, in true Disney princess traditions, she had to kiss her frog Jeremy before finding her prince Ben!

Jeremy competed on The Sing Off Season 4 with AcoUstiKats in 2013. That was the year Home Free won and VoicePlay also competed. Pentatonix won Season 3, and came back to perform on Season 4, which may be when Jeremy and Kirstin met. They were a couple when this was filmed, which might account for those shared grins you mentioned, lol, but of course both have moved on and married other partners since then. EJ Cardona of Voctave was also on Season 4 of the Sing Off with the group The Edge Effect. Its a small acapella world, lol

Very happy to see that you reacted to Voctave. I have seen a bunch of other you tube reactions to their music but they are all focused on the voices. Brilliant to see how you breakdown the arrangement, and the chord progressions, while still commenting on the vocals and even picking up on the tiny details with the background vocals. The "filth" face that you make when Kate hits some of those high soprano notes brings a smile to my face. Thanks for taking the time to educate all of us on the intricacies of these wonderful acapella arrangements from Pentatonix, Voiceplay, Home Free and Voctave. Keep them coming.

If you want to get a good feel for how they sound live, there is a video of them practicing around a piano for this song. Kristin and Jermey end up unable to continue singing because Kate Lott (soprano 1) hits one of her notes in the 6th octave. If you want to get an idea of what each of the 11 members can do, check out their Disney Princess Medley for the 5 ladies and Hero’s and Villans for the men. Or their version of Somewhere. They each take a phrase and gives you a sample of how good they are. The last I heard, their main job was singing in Disney’s Voices of Liberty. So you can watch videos of them and others. The best video for their range is Mary Did You Know with Mark Lowery. Who wrote the lyrics. But they display a 5 octave range in it. From a G2 to G6. And the fact that Kate seems to easily hit the note and does it softly is extremely impressive. I think you’ll really love all their music. Jamey Ray (one of the tenors) is the arranger for the group. And writes each part specifically for each member. Enjoy the Voctave rabbit hole!!

So excited for you to dive into Voctave! Out of the 'big' a capella groups, they're definitely the most choral, and their moving lines are stunning. As well as the Disney Princess Medley, PLEASE PLEASE check out their performance of 'Mary Did You Know' with Mark Lowry (one of the composers). It is a masterclass in song interpretation, and supporting a leading singer. 'O Holy Night' is also stunning.

Nice analysis. Kirstin and Mitch of Pentatonix were both the most interested in careers in musical theater originally. Kirstie did get the opportunity to sing in the musical Kinky Boots and was going to sing in another when Covid quarantine hit I believe. Musical theater has a very specific sound of its own and Disney projects are always distinctive.

Sir...some FYI, members of Pentatonix will ALWAYS remain part of that group, but they allow it's members to do individual things as well. Regarding Kirstin, she has written about 4-5 of Pentatonix originals; has performed on broadway (Kinky Boots); and has made several of her own recordings. Interestingly, this medley was with her fiancé at that time (they split after a year), but now she's married to a photographer that was hired to do many of their concerts...in fact, they now have a baby girl (year old). Also, in the past 4 years+, all the members, except Mitch are married (Scott married his husband; Kevin has a daughter, and Matt's wife is pregnant...so the family grows).😄😄😄

The gentleman in the maroon shirt (next to the bass in the purple shirt) is Jamey Ray, who is the founder of the group and the arranger of all of their music. He's the brilliance behind the group. This performance happened to Voctave officially becoming a group. In fact, the name was suggested by Jeremey -- who is just so thrilled to be around such astounding talent he can't help but smile. Jeremy and Kirstie were dating at the time. Voctave is usually 11 voices.

Sooo excited that you found them. Some of them perform at one of the attractions in epcot in the disney parks in florida. They perform accapella as well, and since they are in the American pavillion, they sing hyms, the anthem, and other disney songs. Its something I always go see when Im in the park. Voctave and PTX are by far my fav as well. You will love seeing those sopranos more, and see just how magical they get.

As a chorister myself, I love watching, listening to, and seeing others appreciate and react to Voctave! There are actually 11 voices (I'm pretty sure) usually, so 3 on a part, with Kate and Tiffany holding down the sopranos. It doesnt have a video, but I'd love to see an analysis to their Prince of Egypt medley, or as others have mentioned the Disney Princess Medley for the ladies, Heroes and Villains Medley for the guys, and Carol of the Bells of Notre Dame for the holidays!

So these guys are often referred to as one of the acapella groups, and I know a capella means in a choral style, but it seems to me they are really just a choir because choirs don’t always use instruments either. I mean, they’re not just “like a choir” … they are a choir?

I love this arrangement. They are very talented. I don’t listen to them much, as I prefer the more pop genre of Ptx, but If you’d like to hear Ptx with voctave they sang background harmonies on Pentatonix’s cover of once upon a December. It’s audio only and they’re not credited on the song but one of the members confirmed it and they’re also listed as an uncredited feature in the Wikipedia for that song.

Once again I appreciate your knowledge and skills that help separate everything going on into understandable (by me) bits. My only criticism of Voctave relates to the number of voices. I like when they use them for interesting rhythmic runs and patterns under the melody. Unfortunately they often seem to run over the soloists. I feel like I'm struggling unsuccessfully to reach into their mix to hear some of the important parts. I don't know if this is their intended arrangement, or if their post production could be different. But definitely so many beautiful voices.

As usual, your ability to "dissect" complex harmonies is light-years beyond most normal humans. 😊 Jamey Ray is the founder, arranger, producer, and one of the tenors for Voctave. His arrangements are spectacular. I know they sometimes (maybe always?) use pitch correction and other post enhancements, but I forgive them since they end up sounding this great! I'll probably get in "trouble" for saying this, but I prefer their numbers that do NOT use outside singers. Even with Kirstin, I think the guest singers are not as good as, or maybe just not as in synch with, the regular group. You noted how Jeremy and Kirstin were smiling at the soprano (Kate). There is actually a video of them rehearsing this, and you can see that these two are a bit overwhelmed by the sheer vocal mastery of Voctave. Kate (soprano-1) always kills it. EJ (tenor) is phenomenal. They all are, but those two always blow my mind. You can't go wrong with Voctave. I hope one of your Patreons requests more!

I’m a massive Voctave fan (I’m the Patreon member that requested this 😅) and EJ is my favorite singer in this group though I love them all. I think they do sound spectacular when it’s just them but a couple of my favorites do feature soloists (Mary Did You Know, Someone Like You). I just had the pitch correction convo with someone in comments yesterday regarding VoicePlay. The thing is, these groups can obviously sing on pitch, even live… and don’t “need” to use major pitch correction. But what a lot of people don’t understand is pretty much all singers and groups use it. I can’t say for sure but I would assume Voctave does as well on their final recordings although I bet very sparingly. But yeah, these amazing singers still aren’t perfect 100% of the time and a note can be ever so slightly over or under and it just sounds better to correct it. But most people wouldn’t even hear or notice if it wasn’t corrected. You would have to have perfect pitch to hear those tiny variations. But people get so offended by the thought of pitch correction and I don’t know why… it’s just a tool in the tool box to use if needed and it isn’t the same as major auto tune. 😂

@@thisismetoday7423 I think it's a shame that the record industry finds it necessary to pitch correct inividuals and and groups who can actually sing. They do it to Pentatonix too. Why oh why? Edited for typos.

  • @thisismetoday7423

    @thisismetoday7423

@@LindaVernon Well, I think it just goes back to even amazing singers aren’t always perfect. So, for example with Pentatonix, you have multiple people singing different parts. They are all amazing singers but it’s likely across all singers, across an entire song, there will be a few notes that are ever so slightly under or over. I don’t think it’s noticeable for most people by ear because it is still basically on pitch. But for a final audio track most professionals will make those slight pitch corrections just for an overall better end result. And it’s much easier than having multiple singers re-record multiple times to get an absolute perfect vocal. It’s also very different from auto tuning which is needed if you are way off and it will tune it too much to where the voice doesn’t even sound natural anymore. You might find this short interview and demonstration by Layne Stein from VoicePlay interesting on the subject. ☺️ kzread.info/dash/bejne/onaEprxveNrOpdY.htmlsi=paDFymXSBH6ec1w2

@@thisismetoday7423 All very reasonable, but I have to agree with Fil from Wings of Pegasus in the UK -- it doesn't sound better. It begins to sound all same and what is lost is the uniqueness of each person's voice, whether in a group or a solo artist. 🙂

@@LindaVernon Yeah, I think it’s probably a matter of preference. I have a few examples of live versions verses studio versions of the same performance and I think they sound almost the same. But I slightly prefer the final studio versions because they are just a bit more polished sounding. But that is just me. 😅
