I'm uploading the advanced series as we speak. Summer is always messy with loads of festivals, gigs etc but the first advanced fry is online already and the next one is coming relatively soon :)

Its always great to get a new video. They help a lot ⭐ for me its the performance part. The running and jumping in a show. Cardio is important. Also just pacing yourself. maybe not all songs require the extra jumping around hahah. Thanks teacher

Cardio is a metal singer's best friend XD The shows are always deadly... I agree with looking at the bigger picture of the whole set and figuring out how to pace oneself for it :)

Great video! Question: as stamina increases, are the vocal folds changing in some way? Or is something else changing to allow for the increase in stamina?

Not that I am aware of, as far as I know the vocal folds stay the same :) It could be that some details of the coordination are becoming more efficient. My guess is usually that, unless there is some obvious technical hiccup occuring, stamina issues are usually the brain getting tired and not paying attention to technique. Thus, the idea of find your max that you can be really focused for, practice there for a bit, and then slowly increase that tolerance. The nerd in me wants to say like playing a video game for multiple minutes/hours in a hyperfocused state to perform really well XD but I don't know if that's relatable XD

I feel like this is a strategy that is really based on luck. Most likely, if you are getting tired, you're tensing something up, especially if you do extreme vocals. Even then, though, the problem may lie somewhere in your basic "clean" technique. Work on relaxing every single part of your body when you sing and especially everything around your vocal tract. Add tension only if you need it for a particular sound you want to make. And for the love of god, make sure you're breathing flawlessly. If the song is naturally difficult for your voice no matter what you do, try to artificially reduce the difficulty when singing live. For example, you can find alternate melodies that take your voice lower and not higher, maybe even lower the key of a song. If there's some singing with distortion, try cleaning it up a bit or even fully omit the distortion on some phrases. Look at how some great singers do all those sings to conserve energy when performing long sets, and try doing so yourself.

I agree with much of this advice. In my mind, all this is technique and assuming the stamina issue is caused by a technical "blimp" but, in my teaching, I often come across singers who are techically solid but are running out of steam and this approach seems to work quite predictably. I find often that technical issues or mistakes don't relate to technique per se but rather levels of concentration and focus. It's often the mind that's fatiguing before anything else.

I mix growl and drive like axl rose,i can sing like 5 songs, then i feel fatigue.😅

Sounds normal to me. The first thing I would do is sing the same 5 songs for 3 days and then change song number 5 and see if that makes any difference...

    What about mid-song stamina?

  • @AlikiKatriou

mid-song stamina is fascinating and I have a different approaches for that. In summary what I like to do is: sing that song, find the consistent mid-point issue. Now, skip the section leading up to that issue and see if the issue still exists - some people can actually finish the whole song and no stamina issue comes up. If that is the case and no issue occurs it's probably a technical problem rather than a stamina issue, now move on to process of elimination in that section. So start reintroducing things, line by line until you can pinpoint a problem. You can even deconstruct it to the accuracy of the exact word that creates the problem. If you find that skipping that section made no difference, then we're actually looking at a stamina issue. Sing that song until the point where you fatigue. Find how much of the song you can sing without any fatigue at all and sing that section daily. At the same time, practice the other sections of the song in isolation. Your goal is to be able to do the first half of the song by itself and the second half by itself. Once you can do that, practice the last part of the first half of the song and the first half of the second half of the song together as an isolated section. Throughout this whole process, you can keep checking in with the entire song every 3 days to see if the issue has been addressed :)
