I've found practicing inward vocals has helped a lot with certain aspects of my outward vocals. For example doing inward vocal fry was a lot easier to get more volume on and I could translate some of that to my outward vocals by alternating. These videos are always very informative, thanks!

It is funny about how we choose our voice when we grow up. My sister's spoken voice had 2 ranges when we were growing up, one low when she was herself, usually moaning about something, and when there were guests in the house, she would use a really high pitch voice with lots of 'happy' or 'friendly' sounds, which would revert to low voice as soon as the guests had gone. Our aunt did that too but used a falsetto high pitch voice to criticise people, which my sister also mimicked when she was older. Sister was also using the high pitch voice to speak to babies or toddlers, which really annoyed me because I knew that really, she was not that nice behaving. As a result, l stuck with my lower tone voice for most of my life, and sometimes catch myself using that French critical tone which is really annoying. My cousin when I was a teenager, told me it was time I learned to use a high pitch voice and not sounds so low when I spoke, (Aliki you would have loved her!!!) because my low voice was not suitable for a woman, not womanly enough. I looked at her with eyes big like a saucepan when she said that, thinking she surely must have gone mad, and I carried on using a low pitch voice since. Why should I change because someone told me my voice was not womanly enough? Why should I force myself to use a pitch that is not natural for me? I bet it is why there are so many women who sound so false when they speak, they have been told to use a higher pitch. I wish I remembered what my cousin's voice was like, how high it is, it nearly makes me want to go back and visit the family, but not quite... Great video, thank you ❤

Choosing our voice is an interesting process. It's always interesting to see how closely we imitate our parents or how far we choose to deviate from our primary references. Spoken voice is also culturally specific and what is considered "normal", "masculine", or "feminine" will vary greatly from country to country, region to region, and over time too.

@@AlikiKatriou interesting point about voices varying with different countries and cultures, it seems for example the Japanese women have a very high pitch, soft voice, at least the ones l heard. But l haven’t travelled enough to have been able to observe the voices. You are the voice expert, or at least you will be with time, l enjoy much your ideas!

@@greendrummers Yes, it is a cultural norm for women in Japan to raise the pitch of their voices and lighten them when they are in the presence of men. This is not a necessary thing when it's a room of women and it can be funny discussing with Japanese women and hearing the change the minute a man enters the room :)

@@AlikiKatriou oh you have heard this with Japanese women? Ohhhhhh it would make me go cringing, because of the obvious thing of it is made to please the patriarchy…but maybe it is done for other purposes, to make the two genders sound very different. I wonder if Japanese men have an extremely low voice in the presence of women and sound very high in a room full of men! 😂

Does this stretching with thin folds help in belting higher notes (or in a "chest dominant mix" as well)? Thanks for the awesome videos

  • @AlikiKatriou

Oooo... Yes to belting higher notes. It's the main approach I use when teaching humans to "belt" throughout their entire range. Most singing teachers I know would consider this a belt, or a chest dominant mix, some would even think it's pure chest voice. However, it isn't, it's all 100% falsetto, just with varying degrees of compression. Putting it out there, because a "proper" musical theatre belt is meant to be chest voice (it hasn't been for years, but whatever). This stretching will get you closer to the type of sounds used in metal, rock and the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. I know loads of singers and teachers who think this is the only way to sing high up, so I just need to mention that you can take pure chest really high and this isn't the way. But it does help with everything :D

_Not the babies, but the pets_ 😍 I'm also realising now that my guinea pigs already taught me a variation of the weeweewee exercise way back omglmao, were they responsible for my highest notes!? 😅 OH NO YES I did try relearning the splits as a clunky adult and HELL NO won't be trying that again 😭 The inhale thing is super interesting, though so far I don't think I'm getting higher than my max exhale pitch 🤔 not sure if need to keep trying, or maybe my voice just doesn't go much further? Is there a way to tell? ...I'm also watching this after like, 2h of pretty full on vocal prac, and... am I imagining that my voice actually feels better after inhale squeaking for a bit? Is that a thing or am I just that delirious rn? 😬 Yes to non-linear improvements lol. Came out of a period of depression, started singing more again, suddenly realised I was hitting higher AND lower notes?? Also had the same thing happen with my screams improving out of nowhere. I think depressed-me did watch a lot of vocal tutorial stuff though and probably my brain absorbed it without me even realising? Did I do more prac than I remember? Brains are weird 🥴

I would say that the sound will start to get extremely, unusably thin if you're near the top of your range. Think of it as a fade out rather than a ceiling... Inhales can 100% make your voice feel better. It does depend on how they are done, but many people are able to achieve less pressure on inhales than exhales, which is always a good thing :)

Ps have you got any information or ideas on inhale-singing? I have been discovering that on my own over the years, but had been concerned about damaging my vocal cords by using them when inhaling, so l have been doing very little and very slowly. Do you know if some cultures use inhale singing sounds? Is it safe to do? No worries if you aren’t sure, it is nice to meet you and i appreciate your work and passion very much.

Ingressive singing is absolutely fine, not damaging at all, we use it quite often in the context or voice therapy as it can be helpful for some people. I don't know if there are cultures that use sustained inhaled singing... the way Inuit women use their voices when throat singing certainly relies on very present, audible inhalations and sometimes phonation on those inhales, so that might be a starting point...

@@AlikiKatriou hooray, thank you so much for your answer, it is such a relief to know it is not damaging! I shall carry on practicing. Have you managed to sing while whistling? I mean using the lips whistle, not the overtone. One other thing l am doing my best to practice but l don’t give it enough time and it doesn’t improve fast enough…
