    I honestly think Kirstin has been the one to improve the most in Pentatonix. If you hear her on the Sing Off in 2011, she sings with a lot of tension but has gotten better and better

    Voctave is a phenomenal acapella group. In this one, the two sopranos in particular were just killing it! Disney's really missing the boat if they don't have Kirstin voice a "Disney princess" in some future feature.

    It's really interesting that you mention that thing about Kirstie's mouth because I've noticed she's been doing way more better nowadays with her jaw and vowels. She worked with a vocal coach in 2017 for her solo project and mentioned working on her jaw tension, and I've seen her making progress on vowels throughout the PTX Summer Tour. It's really nice when singers take their time to look at their mistakes and learn from them. And nice reaction! I've been enjoying your channel a lot :)

    I've noticed this too. She learned some stuff on Broadway. Given the scar on her face and her side-mouth singing in the early days, I've always wondered if she has cleft palate issues...But her recent singing would suggest not.

    Some singers actually do the jaw and purpose. If you work it right and relax you won’t get tension when you sing. Like I noticed when sia sings sometimes she won’t keep her mouth round but other times she will. I find this really interesting and others opinions on it

    Bonnie From Freddy's pizza I don't know Sia very well, but I do know that's a hard habits for Kirstie to drop. I often see her starting to cover her bottom teeth like she used to before, and then correcting herself on the spot! Hopefully she can fully drop that habit in some months or so

    Can we talk about those backup sopranos. It is SO challenging hitting high notes and making them sound light and floaty. So impressed by their ability to whip them out of nowhere. Requires so much breath support. Clapping inside every time they do those notes. So effortless and beautiful.

    I am a big fan of Pentatonix, and while some Pentaholics might be a little upset because of your critique, I am absolutely not. After I've watched your other reaction videos, I've watched this medley again, and the exact reason why I recommended this video for you to react to, was because even I (without much knowledge of vocals and music) was starting to notice a few things that you might have to say something about. So this was very interesting and, as always, full of knowledge, constructive critisism as much as appreciation for the artists. So thank you very much!

  • @stephaniezimbalist3757

    @stephaniezimbalist3757

    How is it nitpicking to mention what is going well and what can be improved upon? That's the whole point of having an expert react to a video. When Tara demonstrates the difference between what a singer did and what they could have done, you can hear for yourself what she's saying which is nice. Sometimes vocal coaches provide constructive feedback but without the demo, which makes it hard for the untrained to understand the technique. Nearly all of her feedback is designed to make singing easier and more efficient for the singer. This will ensure that our favorite singers can enjoy a long and productive career.

    I have only two complaints about Run To You. It's way too early in their career. The group is so much better now. This is Kevin's first real chance to sing with PTX instead of just beatboxing and he's buried way down in the mix. It's a really beautiful part and you can just barely hear him. Can't Help Falling In Love is a much better showcase of Pentatonix singing in five part harmony. The singing is a lot better and Kevin and Ben Bram's arrangement is exquisite. (Yes, Kevin arranged it then Ben polished it up.)

    I love these reaction videos you have been doing. A couple days ago I discovered your channel and I've liked, subscribed, and clicked the bell to be notified when you put up new content. Voctave has long been a group I've followed and just love the sound that they collectively produce. The two sopranos, Kate Lott and Tiffany Coburn, especially are just divine in their effortlessness in reaching, sustaining, and projecting those high notes. I also love their transitions and key changes. Back to your video(s), your immediate reactions are also wonderful to watch. You are very respectful to the artists, which is very refreshing in this world of excess negativity. But you are also ENJOYING and APPRECIATING the music and it comes across as such!! Music goes further than just right notes, right technique... it is about the emotion invoked, and as you listen to them, we get those raw, un-adultered emotions, as well. You also have a beautiful, beautiful voice; your timbre is just lovely. Thank you for doing these and, honestly, I would love to hear your reaction videos to more of Voctave's videos. Or also more of Pentatonix's videos, too!

I then started wondering how you would break this down and now you did it! I cant really sing (besides in the shower and my car) but I really enjoy seeing how you break down the music and it is teaching me (someone who doesn't sing) a lot about music mechanics and how simple things like the placement of your jaw can really affect the pitch and power of a music note. I am really enjoying how you break down all of this, and provide examples. I'm not a singer (well, not professional), but I do voice acting. Through your commentary (and other skilled coaches I have sought) on the production of vowels, consonants, shaping the mouth, etc. it continues to help give me insight into better production of my voice over with diction especially in regards to voicing accents and characters. I find by using singing exercises like scales, runs, breathing exercises, posture etc. every day for the past few years really helps so much with vocal strain. This is especially true since I do long periods of character work in audio books. Thanks for helping out!

    Goodness, so many good comments already! Anyway - one of the things I really like about this particular video, is the opportunity to compare our two very talented, but still very young, leads, with the also very-talented Voctave, who have had a couple of decades to polish their craft. Every time I watch this video, it makes me think about what Kirstin and the rest of Pentatonix are going to sound like, when they're in their 30s and 40s and have had decades more training and performance experience. I don't think my heart will be able to stand it :) Thanks so much for this reaction, I'm really enjoying your breakdowns and critique - makes listening to the videos a much richer experience. For Pentatonix, I'd like to hear your thoughts on their video for 'Hallelujah'. And for another, Scott and Mitch of PTX did a collaboration of Katy Perry's 'Rise!', with Mary Lambert, Brian Justin Crumb, and Mario Jose. Thanks again, for sharing your reactions and expertise with us!

    I had a blast watching this. Tara, I'm a professional trumpet player who has always benefited from bringing certain vocal techniques into my playing...breathing, open throat...more conceptual than I am able to describe. I've followed Voctave for a while now knowing most of them in the Voices of Liberty ensemble. Fun to see your reactions to them. Well done Tara.

    I hearby appoint you as Kirstin's new vocal coach! You're awesome! You really see the details. I know Kirstin's been working with a vocal coach because she used to have a pronounced "side mouth" singing style and she's just about lost that. She has really improved a lot in just the last 12 or 18 months, and she's more confident as well. Sadly, the relationship with Jeremy didn't work out so well. But who knows, these things can change on a dime. I'm not sure it makes a difference, but I noticed there are at least two different takes in the making of this video. One where Kirstin and Jeremy are directly facing each other and another where they're at an angle. So I'm not sure the visual picture exactly matches the sound we're hearing in each case. But the analysis of her singing seems on point either way, so she probably sings it consistently every time.

    Hi!! So I really like your content! So far you’ve picked 3 of some of my favorite videos to watch and listen to (the two Voctave vids and Pentatonix) and I feel like I’m learning so much about vocal techniques. Great commentary! My suggestion, and I hope you’ll consider it, is making a commentary video on Peter Hollens, specifically his Disney Villians Medley (since you seem to like Disney stuff). Thank you for doing these videos, I’ve very much enjoyed them!

    I love the way you critique and point things out in this video. I've seen one other video of yours--the Evolution of Rihanna by Pentatonix, and I am a fan of Pentatonix. I would like to see you react to either Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy or Daft Punk, which are both by Pentatonix. I do like your content and the little bits of singing that you do throughout the videos because it shows me that you KNOW what you're talking about, and I have already learned some things just from this one video! I've never subscribed to someone's channel so easily before.

    Being a fan of Kirsten though Pentatonix, she does tend to smirk sing but it's a pretty big part of why she's so charming as a performer. So yeah she sacrifices some depth and tone by not dropping her jaw but personally the whole package is worth any personal quirks in singing she has.
