Bono's voice in the Unforgettable Fire days was off the scale. I left a concert hall in 1985 and saw a thousand people crying as they made their way back to their cars, all still singing the encore song.

Must have been '40'. I caught them on the same tour. I'll never forget the crowd still singing in one voice all the way out of the venue and on to the street.

@@stevemercer6976 it was 40, 40 is the only song you can keep singing while going back to your car! (Also I believe U2 ended every show on the unforgettable fire tour with 40)

@@sbuttonblossom9286 It's actually kind of crazy. Listened to the live version of that song recently and I'm still impressed by Bono's voice.
I love Bono’s vocal performances but it’s not just the vocals it’s also the emotional support to the vocals. What he can bring to our hearts.
I just recently watched the video of U2 performing the song "Miss Sarajevo" in Milan with Bono singing the Pavarotti part in Italian. It was amazing.
Emotion is the key for Bono, 100%. That's what makes him the awesome singer he is, and why he says he can't double his vocals in the studio because he never sings them exactly the same twice.
Her future cuddle partners have a lot to live up to. I never considered how Bono goes from talking to singing in this song. Great video!

Oh man. I love this. If you’re keen to do another u2 song where Bono’s voice is pure emotion, please do All I want is you / Where the Streets Have no Name, live from Slane Castle 2001. Stunning, goose bump stuff

Bono's voice is all character. He is the most emotional and powerful singer around!
One of the best vocalists of all time for sure. Awesome stuff 😎
Her face shining. Her eyes brighting. That’s U2. Amazing video
Wow, man. Those cries. Rips my heart out of my chest every version, every time.
Goosebumps. Every time. Doesn't get more legendary than this.
I know this video/channel is all about the vocal styles and techniques, but that harmonic resonance sound, nearly theremin-like that Edge is getting from the guitar at the beginning...Another master at his craft in this band.

I believe he is using an E-Bow (a guitar tool that causes a string to vibrate infinitely so that you can play notes on it without having to pick it, similar to how a strings player uses a bow, rather than using a pick) live, but it is an Infinite Guitar (actually a prototype at the time), created by Michael Brook used on the album. An E-Bow simulates it fairly well. Much like how the part on Heroes by Bowie was not played with an E-Bow either, yet can be approximated by one very easily.
@eboethrasher

You can see him using an E-Bow during the sessions for The Unforgettable Fire on the behind the scenes documentary.
@davidburke2132
2 жыл бұрын
@@eboethrasher I think by this point he’s using a Fernandes Sustainer system in the guitar (from the clips in this video with The Edge in the distance he doesn’t appear to be holding an EBow and his picking hand movements wouldn’t be consistent with the stability needed to use an EBow to get the sounds he’s getting at that point). It’s basically the same technology as an EBow but integrated into the guitar itself housed within the pickups. It facilitates the same sounds and playing techniques as an EBow with the added flexibility of leaving your picking hand free and being usable on all strings simultaneously if you want to do that. Ed O’Brien of Radiohead has the same system installed in his signature Fender Stratocaster. Edit: it’s definitely a Fernandes Sustainer system. If you pause the video at 9:36 you can clearly see the Fernandes neck pickup with its characteristic ‘blade’ rather than polepiece design.
All in all, I thought he did pretty well here considering that they usually play this towards the end of the show. I personally always get nervous leading up to that falsetto piece at the end; it's like "is his voice going to hold for it tonight or will he crack?" LOL. But hey, he always tries and at, what, 61 now, I guess we can't ask more of him than that. He'll always be one of the very best singers to ever rock a stage and not just from his generation either. Thanks for the video !
His father literally had just passed away a few days prior. But he chose to still put on the show, a lot of his voice that night was actual legit pain and sorrow, if you notice the edge gave him a bro understanding his pain look a few times and the band had a somber emotion

I've been listening to U2 since 1997. I became a fan like in 2001. They are sooooooooo good. Their shows are incredible and Bono's voice is amazing, even now that he's much older.
Great reaction video . The emotion side of Bono is what sets him apart from every other frontman. Such an unbelievable performer. See miss Sarajevo live from Milan Bono sings incredible in that. Also Bad from live aid is another one of Bono’s best vocals. He has unbelievable vocals but throws in unbelievable emotion at the same time 👌
The best vocals Bono ever done was on Clannad's song "In a lifetime" in fact the vocals of both Moya Brennan and Bono in that song are pure emotion and spine tingling 👌

This! This is so great to see you reacting to U2 just as thousands of us do every time we watch their live stuff! Raw emotion ❤️
Simply OUTSTANDING... Your heartfelt reaction was nearly as heartfelt as this masterpiece song.
I admire your optimistic way of being, you burn optimistic energy
Bono is a master of belting
You should definitely do All I want is you/Where the streets have no name live from Slane castle. The emotion in his voice is amazing. His father had not long died
I love your huge, genuine smile whilst listening in the beginning.
What you don't hear in these live versions is that the crowd will be absolutely belting out the song. When you are in the crowd, you can barely hear the band so it will be the same for bono.
Wonderful analysis, utterly enjoyed your reaction/summary of this U2 - most specifically Bono's performance. Thank You, Beth.
My favorite version of this song is on the Rattle and Hum Movie. All 4 of them nail their performances, but Edge just takes it to 12 with his Solo.
Thank you Beth! You always pick the best songs of the best groups to react to. Love every one of them !!! Well done!
Finally! U2. Bono makes more amazing vocal performances on other less popular songs, though (red hill mining town, a sort of homecoming, bad, moment of surrender, among others)

Red Hill Mining Town is a song I didn’t really appreciate until I experienced it live and his vocals really pop off, even nowadays with the songs being in a lower key!
You could check out the band Inhaler, the lead singer is bono‘s son and their voices are sometimes very similar.
when the boston concert DVD was released I was in high school - I think I watched that concert like twice a week for months 😂 this part especially was like omg bonooooo please sing this to me!!
Absolutely beautiful video Beth! Thanks so much for covering this absolute classic, from Sabaton to U2, you've my taste in Music covered!
Bonos pronunciation of "you" as "chew" is an Irish thing, its part of a lot of Irish accents and bono says this in his normal speaking voice also
I've seen U2 live about a dozen times, and I'm always amazed at how much raw emotion Bono puts into his performances.
I was blessed to see U2 opening concert at Madersin Square NY for this, mind blown
You have to do "Love is Blindness" + "Can't help falling in Love" from Sydney in 93 by them. Absolutely stunning!

Great Reaction Beth! I saw U2 live back in 87. Such Good Times.
Always loved the bass in this song, especially in the beginning.
Was at the 360 tour in Brisbane Australia mid 2000s remember belting the out with 60 000 fans. He stopped half way through we took over, was awesome.
U2 is a bucket list band for me. Unfortunately they haven't come near where I am yet. I keep hoping they do some time
He lost his voice the day before this concert, but still singing great... he talks about that in the intro of Kite
Thank you for doing an all time favorite songs!
I believe it's more about connecting with your audience emotionally, and passionately, and less about being technically correct. The greatest performers / vocalists, past and present, are natural masters at this. Nice analysis Beth..........
U2 is the Best concert I’ve ever seen live 👌🏼
Beth, you really need to look at Bono singing ‘Kite’ from U2 live at Slane Castle in 2001. The emotion is insane. Bono sings it for his father who passed away a few days earlier. It will destroy you. 🥺
I had never thought of the vocalization parts of this song as anguished cries but it makes SENSE and it really comes through in this performance. I love it!
I love this reaction vid. I would love to see you do a reaction to the live version of Every Breaking Wave. Bono basically carries the song with little more than a piano behind him, and it's beautiful beyond words.
Ok i can only click that like button once but if i could i would still be liking this right now!:):):) Storytelling, interacting with a crowd, engaging people, questioning themselves and other people way of living, getting a viewpoint across, etc, etc . This is what i mostly miss in the years now where everything is based on that quick notion of haste, getting your high as fast a s possible. This band will forever be there in my heart and i am so glad that i have grown up and have been able to listen to their music and watch them live! A real treat and honor! Maybe technically not the best example but if you want to explain to people how you should make music and above all how you should tell a story and perform this definitely is one of the examples how you should do it!! (would love to see a special on Bono. What makes him great? Or maybe not because i allready know what makes him great!:):):):):):):))
Bono love ,thank You
Great performance and loved the reaction. You should check out U2’s Sydney performance of Can’t Help Falling in Love With You. One of Bono’s finest and most interesting vocal performances.

I love how much you loved this song!!! I am a massive U2 fan from Argentina and love your reactions and lessons on singers, please keep reacting to U2. I also would like to recommend you to react to an Argentinian singer called Abel Pintos, particularly to the song El Adivino live. Thanks and love!
I know nothing about singing, but appriciate good singers. I love your honest and passionate reviews. Keep it up....loving your channel. Would live to see a review of Matt Bellamy and Muse!
Zooropa 1992 at old Wembly (proper Wembly) was the greatest gig I will ever go to my whole life, come what may.I was 2nd row and Bono sounded amazing, the whole show was larger than life.
Grande análise Beth! Gosto muito da música "Sometimes you can't make it on your own" onde Bono entrega tudo em homenagem ao seu pai. Ao vivo, sua voz nessa música se transforma em ópera de tanta vontade de quebrar os limites físicos para chegar até ele. Emocionante!
Joshua Tree. An absolute legend of an album. The ONLY thing I could add to it is Van Diemen's Land, because Edge is such a good vocalist.
I love Bono. He gives it all.
You have to react to u2 every breaking wave live from the EMA’S 2014 . One of Bono’s greatest vocals ever . Unbelievable performance. Spine tingling

This is amazing, I forgot Bono did/does that type of thing. You should react to Keane if you haven't. And I know you already reacted to Depeche Mode but there's a live version of When The Body Speaks in Paris that is not perfect but idk I'd like to see your opinion.

His Miss Sarajevo in Milan is amazing
very nicely done. Try Every Breaking Wave by U2 at the MTV Awards :-) One of my fave of his vocals. Or Miss Sarejevo from Milan (when he goes for the Pavarotti bit).
Beth es hermosa 😍
Amazing! Thanks for your analysis. And you should do another video of Bono, there are hundreds of better performances by him, including falsetto voices etc. I will suggest Mysterious Ways in 93, it has all he can do with the voice :)
if you plan on doing more u2, i definitely recommend reacting to the live rendition of Sunday Bloody Sunday from rattle and hum. probably their greatest live performance
A great performance is Hands That Built America during the Oscars. Even Daniel Day Lewis emotional.
Wow
Please please please, have a listen to Every Breaking Wave from the MTV EMAs.
You are very sharp ma'am. Chapeau.
i saw this tour in PHX - the girl was sobbing (and i don't blame her)
My favourite U2 song has to be "Where the Streets have No Names". 😍💖
