Vocal Coach Reacts to Skid Row | Sebastian Bach |18 and Life | Live | Ken Tamplin
“18 and Life” was Skid Row’s most successful hit song and today I wanted to do a reaction to a performance of the tune.
The band released the song back in 1989 off their debut album and it went on to reach number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Written by guitarist Dave Sabo, the song was inspired by a newspaper article Soto had read about a tragic story of an 18 year old shooting a friend with a gun he thought was not loaded. The music video to the song was created around the same story.
The song has been named the 60th best hard rock song of all time by VHI and was certified gold with over 500,000 copies sold.
The performance I’ll be reacting to was much later in life and I was really impressed with how well Sebastian Bach did. He definitely can still hold his own and sounded as solid as ever.
I’m looking forward to hearing what you all thought of his performance so please make sure to share your thoughts!

It's not your imagination, it's a vocal track at 4:23 you can see he pulls the mic away before he's finished singing and video is edited away from showing him sing critical parts in the song , it's not your imagination, you are hearing a younger voice , he's lip syncing like he did in the music video .

@@sincm91 sorry Sebastian is #3 on my list not that its a bad thing. But no one could touch Dio at #1. And a close #2 to Dio is Halford. Sebastian is squarely #3 for me in his prime. Dio and Halford kept their voice for a significantly longer time than Bach. But they both took care of their voices better. Just an FYI I'm considering this my metal list. #4 would be Dickenson and #5 would be Tate. If I added just rock in general Mercury would be there as well.

Love Sebastian! Definitely one of my favorite vocalists of all time!! I remember hearing him on Eddie Trunk talking about the 30th anniversary of the first Skid Row album and he was crushed that his former band mates did not want to do anything commemorating it. He planned to tour with his current band and do all these awesome songs. It’s sad that the guys are so estranged from one another after being such a force together.
@kentamplin

Yes, it's sad.
This is great, a matured singer doing his difficult early stuff. Clearly he can’t duplicate the fullness of the twang he originally had, He sounds a little more nasal and more thin in the high register, More falsetto and less scream. But good for him, he’s doing amazingly well And like Bruce Dickinson, he’s not letting the crowd down one bit despite his changing voice. He’s a pro.

Ken covers great artists and makes great points that I haven’t heard from anyone else! I grew up listening to (and singing) Skid Row, admiring Sebastian’s seemingly untouchable upper register, but Ken’s advice (and course) has me reaching those highs…..as a second tenor/baritone. Thanks Ken for covering another great artist and classic song! 🤘
I did appreciate how you addressed that nasally sound, because that was not something that I had given much thought to before. But I was interested to hear your take on his grit / vocal distortion in his voice, cause he was one of my early influences to vocals. I still use the grit in my own voice, but I gotta be careful how aggressive I get with it or else it wears down my voice quickly. I've noticed that vocal compression-grit is easier on my voice than volume/loudness-grit, but I'm still working on finding other ways to make that grit easier on my voice.
Wow, what an intro. Love this song ken. Always love your reactions ✌❤btw great scream!

Nice and fun video and insights as always! Amazing to see Sebastian nailing it now better than in the 90s. In my opinion his issue was never reach or stamina, but, back then, pitch. Then again, it could have been caused by many different things, and whatever was the cause, it seems he has resolved it. Sometimes his demeanor on stage reminds me of Ian Anderson and Derek William (Fish). Sebastian rocks!

Ken, I very much enjoy your content. I saw SB live for the first time last year and wasn’t sure how well preserved his voice would be. He overall was very good!! He paced himself for some of the long/high notes but he hit them well!! 😊 Definitely one out of that era who still sounds great. Also I think his Broadway singing served him well 👏🏻
Watching your videos and hearing your amazing testimony made me finally get back into singing, at least a bit for now. I've fallen into a super depressed funk due to an awful, disfiguring, and disabling, incurable disease jumped on me about 4 yrs ago, called bilateral lower extremity lymphedema (already in late stages) along w/severe neuropathy and fibromyalgia, just for a cherry on top of the crap Sundae 🍨 😳! I've found that music and more specifically singing is nearly, if not more beneficial to me than all my medications put together. Before I got sick, I was at every single place that had karaoke and knew which places had it and who the dj was, and won a few competitions and even sang in an online and radio commercial for a friend's bar and restaurant. All that stopped. Basically I allowed my illness to put my entire life on pause ⏸. I can't live like that anymore. I'm not going to get well, so I've gotta learn to live whatever is left, just the way I am. I want to thank you for helping me with that, whether you realize it or not, you do this for many people. Please keep in being your beautiful, kind hearted self, Ken. You have definitely inspired me.
