Rush are legends, without a doubt. Neil was a philosopher, author, poet, song writer, musical genius and imo, the best drummer of all time. This song brings tesrstears to my eyes and makes me happy. Very powerful song for me.

John Alarcon well your brother is right and wrong. Neil is the best drummer in the world. There is more than just hitting the skins. He wrote the songs, not just any but with meaning in them in hard time signatures. Yes Neil will never play jazz like buddy but buddy will never be able to play rock like Neil.

John Alarcon that’s what I said. Buddy can’t play rock like Neil and Neil can’t play jazz like buddy. Neil has spent more time on a lot than any other person. He practiced day in and day out. Now having an opinion is ok and I don’t care if you think so and so is better, but until you are able to play 3/4 with your feet and 7/8 in your hands like Neil then don’t bother. Buddy could play fast, Neil could too but Neil had more technical parts in songs. Neil quoted it himself with Tom Sawyer. He never gets bored playing it because it’s a extremely hard song to play and when he would do it correctly he would feel amazing. Neil’s compositions sound easy but there were very hard parts to them. If you were a drummer you would understand where this is going and this conversation wouldn’t of been started but people don’t understand that oh I don’t know anything about this so I’m going to say what I feel is correct and tell others wrong. It’s like telling a drummer who has the music in front of them saying that’s not how the part goes.

@John Alarcon I concur. Hell even Neil believed Buddy Rich was the best. The guy was amazing and the sound he got out of a small kit, his speed and doing it all with a traditional grip just proves that. But in my book Neil was a very close 2nd.

Geddy was singing hard over 200 nights a year for years. And they played as a band for 4 decades. The fact that at his age, after the insane torture he put his voice through, that he still sounded this good is a testament to his talent. He had to modify songs toward the end to accommodate his limited range. There are also times where you can here he was thinking about maybe going up but decided not to and switched downward. There's a slight awkward twang that it brings in. But his voice was always clear and powerful.

I absolutely love Geddys sense of humor. Note he's wearing a RASH shirt which is a parody of his own band haha

RUSH had a great sense of humor. For the longest time the crew would play the 3 stooges theme just befote RUSH took the stage. Also in concert, Geddy kept a brandy snifter on his keyboard-the snifter containing a few crumpled dollar bills as if he was a lounge player. Also in concert, first there was the giant bunny that came out of the box (like a jack in the box), then a second bunny with a shotgun that killed the first bunny. Finally, there was the washing machine and dryer on the stage, actually washing and drying clothes as RUSH performed.

Geddy has a lot more "twang" here compared to his earlier vocal style, not to mention much higher then... if you listen to almost anything from the 1970's, his vocal range was stratospheric.

Personally, I liked Rush better when Geddy did less falsetto and modulated his range. But, then again, Fly By Night is my least-favorite Rush song.

@@jeffstanlis Yeah, I was going to make that comment, figured somebody else would. Even in the late eighties when the album was released his voice was much higher. Would have liked more to see a video on 'finding my way' or even "drink the milk of paradise.....whaaa paradise". This was when geddy knew the jon anderson falsetto was going out of style as well as killing his layrnx.

@@jeffstanlis Very little falsetto if at all. Straight up head voice with a diaphragm powerhouse.

Neil has two drum kits there, back-to back, and the whole drum platform swivels 180 degrees to bring the other kit to the front. The "back" kit is an electronic kit used in some songs and his solo. He didn't try to play them both at the same time.

On a side note, Neil is probably the most popular drummer in rock. In other concerts, fans play air guitar. In some Rush videos, I have seen fans play air drums.

One of Rush's underrated songs! The lyrics resonate with all of us! They shoulda invited Til Tuesday's Aimee Mann, who sang backing vocals on the studio version of the song, on the tour with them!

Rush is one of my Top 3 favorite bands, they always shuffle between spots in my heart. I absolutely love 'em and cannot stop listening to their albums. No matter the era, everything sounds great to me. Geddy Lee is easily one of the most underrated singers in Rock History!

They're one of the most unique bands I've ever heard... Both from a compositional point of view and as far as interpretation is concerned

You may have done RUSH a little bit of a disservice by choosing a video from a time period very late in their tenure...Geddy was struggling at this point, and having to find new ways to sing the songs in order to hit notes he used have well within his range...so it sounds a bit awkward in comparison to the time the songs were created. 70's, 80's, 90's were their wheelhouse.

I agree a thousand percent. Age crept up on him and his range is definitely affected by it. It's bitter sweet that Rush retired. Loved their music but time and the rigors that they've been thru for so many years have taken their toll.

Back in their early day, he hit high notes that could shatter crystal wine glasses.Those guys are the best of friends.Like good friends,humor amongst them is paramount.

Doesn't have to be a video, but go back and listen to thier early work and you can hear how his original voice has mellowed as he's gotten older. Pretty cool.

He is mellowed in the studio. Sounds great on record but live as of recent - nope.

Geddy Lee is a phenomenal Bass player and multi instrumentalist who ended up singing because nobody else wanted to do it. Tom Sawyer is a great showcase of his bass playing and singing. If anyone says that playing bass is easy listen to Geddy. His pronunciation of words and vowels might be down to that fact that he’s Canadian eh. 😀

This is my favourite song from my favourite band. When I was younger it was just a ‘catchy’ tune, but now I’m older it really hits home!

Just glad I got to see them before the group retired. Epic band. Musical geniuses.

"It's joyous!" "You just want to have a little party"! That's Rush: this is one of their saddest songs lyrically, and yet it's still so upbeat and full of life/energy!

I'm an old hippie from the 70's and lost count of how many concerts I've been to. Rush played for a very long time and was by FAR the best show I ever saw. Anyway I enjoy your reactions because of your comments on the mechanics singing as a cancer procedure has given me a new vocal cord and a very small understanding of what is going on in there. We should all hope to sing this well at this age. 52-53 when this was recorded :) To appreciate his singing you need to listen to works through out his 40+ yr singing career. I was in this audience row 2 in front of Geddy. Geddy realized early in their career that he had to use his voice to not only sing the words, but to emote the words and message. To be another instrument in the orchestra they created. He never lost that ability from 2112 - The Garden I can not think of a single song that he did not perform as well live as he did in studio.

Ah, this was the song me and my wife had our first dance to at our wedding. An earlier recording would have been a better choice to hear Geddy in his prime, but any Geddy Lee is Geddy Lee and by default is worth listening to. This has also probably been covered but the rear of his drum kit is an electric set, and it's set on a turn table. For certain songs the kit will spin around and he'll revert to the electric kit. Or part way through a solo. Because why have one kit when you can be surrounded in drums? So sad I'll never the get chance to see them live again. But I have my memories.

Rush is my fav band. Thank you Beth. Geddy has taken loads of criticism over his career about his voice. Btw, you’re absolutely lovely and adorable.

Wow. Holy crap, what a surprise to see a Rush song for a VOCAL REACTION. Rush gets a lot of their songs used for general song reactions, because they're are so awesome and each member is one of the top musicians on their instrument, but Geddy is generally considered a highly polarizing vocalist - most folks either love or hate him. So when I saw you were reviewing a live version of one of my favorite Rush songs, I was intrigued to see your comments to say the least. I think Geddy doesn't get the credit he deserves as a vocalist. He does a great job with what he has and maximizes his vocal value add to the band and songs. While this wouldn't have been my first choice to do a vocal reaction to, it's definitely a good one. If I was choosing I'd go with either the unplugged live version of "Resist" or the electric live version from their 90's tours. Still, it's great to hear your comments on his singing ability, I figured there was a 50/50 chance you wouldn't like it, but it sounds like you think he's at least pretty good.

Totally agree on his vocals! When I first heard his voice in 1979 as a 16 year old, it wasn't his voice that puzzled me, it was the complicated arrangements that was way over my head at the time :p. Geddy Lee's vocals (and James LaBrie of Dream Theater) can be contentious and world war battles will ensue between the pros and cons, but he is the voice of Rush, and even he participates in "other" songs, or his solo album, and "Flashback" singing classics, we recognize right off and admire what he does. I love the guy, and met him and Alex at the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, they were soo damn friendly :). But as a Bassist . . . . hell, just listen to what he's playing _behind_ Alex's solo on "Freewill", damn!

Yeah, I would not pick Geddy as one of my top vocalists... Bassist - absolutely... among the best... BUT I think he sings by default - that is the way they have always done it and they made it work. I have grown to like Geddy, but I will never seek a rush song to listen to his vocals... The trio work magic - time signature changes etc... but will never hold a candle to Floor Jansen from nightwish, Tati from Jinjer, and the others who bring vocals as their main talent. Rush's claim to fame is their music - and lyrics... vocals are an afterthought... (in my opinion). Still in my top 3 bands of all time...

Credit and respect Beth for making timeless music appealing for the next generations. Class is permanent (waves) 😄

Like others have said, his range has suffered as he aged. He always sings well, but in the later years, his live performances are harder for him, especially when he's singing earlier songs that were in higher registers that came easy to him when he was younger. But regardless, it was always a joy to hear him sing. He has such a warm inviting quality to his voice.

Seeing as you're analyzing the technical aspects of Geddy's voice (something I find weird), you should know his background. He has a nasal voice to begin with, and grew up listening to his relatives speaking with a Hassidic accent and intonation. Also, he went into Rock (early 70's) not knowing what he was doing and not caring (the best attitude for creativity, if you have talent). I've heard people describe his early look and sound as "like a witch", and they may be right, but I love it. He got smoother in the late 70's to mid 80's. Now, for these tours, later in life, he took vocal lessons in order to find techniques to hit those high notes from his youth. The result sounds different, admittedly, but I respect him for it. Few vocalists have ever been those "screamers" who can excite you with a sudden high, much like a saxophone player would inject a sudden screech into a solo. Ian Gillan, Robert Plant, Geddy Lee, Joe Cocker, John Lee Hooker, there aren't many, and when the voice starts to inevitably fail, most folks drop an octave for those parts. Well...that's called... anti-climax. Those parts are important! Geddy did his utmost to preserve the original song's energy and buoyancy. I really love your analysis and positive energy! Great job Beth.

@@TheMentalblockrock Well, I'm talking about that sudden interjection. The energy shift. Listen to "Shake it Baby" by Hooker. He doesn't do it often, but when he does, it works. And it is screaming, just not like Gillan and Lee. Cocker does it too, you couldn't have real soul music without it. Even with the others I mentioned, I didn't mean that they scream all the time, but that when they come in with that scream energy, they do it perfectly. Peace.

Very informative. I didn't know Geddy took lessons later on. Good on him. I saw this tour when they did the UK and thought he was struggling. I'm kinda glad they've taken the move to retire gracefully after 41 years and leave a great legacy instead of going into decline.

@@mikecook7530 Yeah, I agree. I never see bands or tours just for the sake of something. I saw the last few tours, often multiple times, just because they were that good. On the second to last tour, I knew that would be it. I didn't see the last tour because I could foresee where the imperfections would be in both drumming and singing. Unfortunately, Rush music is written so that it has to be reproduced perfectly or it kind of doesn't work.

This version is definitely after he started to lose his voice. Look for an earlier one to hear the song as originally intended.

I still like older (age) Geddys voice, never really felt he lost it, but obviously that classic Geddy Wail is out of his range by this point. More like his register has been limited by age.

He didn't "lose" his voice. He found a more comfortable and "conservative" way of singing. What you are hearing now is his more natural voice. Early in his career, he really didn't know how to sing properly. He got smarter.

@@curtpangracs8684 Disagree. The notes are all wrong. Listen to the original version of Limelight and compare it with live versions in the last 10 years. Even if you are right Geddy sounded better in the past than he does now. He sounds like he is having trouble hitting the notes. Spirit of The Radio and Freewill will would HAVE NEVER been a hit if he had sung it like THIS. So I gather then you hate Something For Nothing and 2112? Since back then he wasn't singing in his real voice. I KNOW YOU ARE A FAN. We all are but dude really... This is all wrong. Take out your CD (do you even own and disk?) and listen to Hold Your Fire. This is not the song. Rush was about many things. One major factor was Geddy singing "forced Alto" as you say. People loved it. Not critics! The same thing happend to Elton John. Some smart ass producer (David Bell) told him he was singing all wrong. So Elton starting singing in his "real" voice which ruined a lot of older songs. Bennie And The Jets and so many others would not have been possible without Elton singing all wrong. You have a lot to learn about Rock music buddy. Peace out.

I see Rush, I click Like! Love your takes on artists. You should go back for sure in their catalog when his voice was younger and stronger. Even this song is different in voice from the original.

This makes me want to cry! I love Rush so much and I miss them.

"It's mega high" Yet that's nothing compared to what Geddy could do in his prime :) "They're just having the best time! And it gives me the best time watching it!" One of the many things I love about Rush - they always seem to have an absolute blast on stage. And you're right, that attitude is entirely reflected in the audience - it never, *ever* felt like you were just another tour stop. You always felt like they were on the road just for the sake of your city. Never seen another band that quite pulled that off the same way... not sure I ever will. ...And suddenly I'm realizing that this song now applies to yet another important part of my life. As if it wasn't already emotional enough :|

I'm actually glad you picked this version of the song. It's very interesting to hear you describe all the techniques he's using to try to hit certain notes. Obviously his voice is not what it used to be, but I still enjoy it. It gives their songs a different feel and we get to see them in a new light. It's almost like Rush covering Rush, and I love it.

I've always felt that his performances became more emotive and nuanced as his voice aged. It's as if once his "wail" left him, he became more concerned with the meaning of the lyrics and the feelings being conveyed.

I was at this show in cleveland. What a treat to have them perform such a great show and have it on bluray. During the wide crowd shots from the back i was sitting right infront of that camera and that weird lady dancing fell onto me during intermission lol

Hi Beth, you should have a listen to early Rush from the 1970's... his voice was so high back then, only dogs could hear him! Haha... (from Australia).

This so amazing! I've been a huge rush fun for the past 30 years! I'll be 49 tomorrow. I'm guessing you are in your early twenties, Beth. Watching you watch and listen to them play this classic song for the first time in your life, and watching the joy in your face, and the amazing comments on his style is just so awesome!!! This has always been one of my favorite Rush songs. I even had front row seats at this particular tour. But, I don't think I've ever enjoyed the song as much as I have with your added comments today. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. It made my day!

Fantastic! I've been waiting for a Rush song for a while, Geddy has such a unique voice, and the band has such a wide spectrum of styles it's fascinating to see how he's adjusted throughout the years to fit what they're playing.

Sadly, the days to see RUSH in concert are over. But thankfully they have left us with an IMMENSE library. All we have to do is plug in any live DVD and off you go. Rush wasn't just any concert. Geddy really changed his singing style as he aged. He was 58 when this was recorded.

You're gonna have to hit early RUSH. This does absolutely no justice to Geddys vocal range and ability in his younger days.

Early as being post '80, since before then he was mostly just too high and uncontrolled. His voice was great from '80 to about 2005 (the R30 tours were the last he didn't start struggling on; however, attending many shows and listening to many concert cds/blurays/boots from the Snakes and Arrows tours on, I noticed that he definitely had better and worse nights and they tended to record for shows late in the tour when his voice was more tired/strained. so, you could have a great Snakes and Arrows or Time Machine or Clockwork Angels or R40 concert recording, but often they choose the dates when all the music/lighting/etc. kinks were worked out, but Ged's voice was just tired).

So sad I'll never see them live again. And this is one of my favorite songs. Neil was so on point with the lyrics.

You should find some live tracks from back in their prime (7o's and early 80's) before Geddy's voice got older.

Saw them twice! This is the time that Geddy's voice really started to struggle with the high note. He could almost break glass in their earlier years. It's funny to see Alex playing the one instrument he hated. The keyboards and synthesizers became a priority over his guitar during one of their many phases of development.

Alex liked to bitch about it, but there was still a lot of guitar on those records. He should've pulled an Eddie Van Halen and played the keyboards himself.

@@ischmidt On Power Windows maybe but not Hold Your Fire. And the guitars on that record sounded like keyboards. THAT WAS THE PROBLEM DUDE.

@@johnmorris2170 unfortunately, that was the sound of a lot of guitars in the 80's outside of hard rock and heavy metal. Although Rush is considered a progressive rock (perhaps pre-progressives metal), during the 80's some of their music embrace what seemed the style of 80's pop from an instrumental standpoint.

I saw them in Mobile Alabama during Moving Pictures Tour. Max Webster was supposed to open but broke up an hour before the show began. My sister and brother had purchased me a ticket for my 18th birthday. My sister, as usual, was running late. When we got to the gate I hear 2112 Overture. I said by to my sibs and said I'd see them after the show. Rush played the entire show, about 4 hours. Incredible show. I saw them again in Pensacola Florida with Tommy Shaw of Styx opening for my 21st birthday. What a show hearing all the great Styx tunes.

Such a nice review. Very descriptive. Never thought of this stuff. Can't stop smiling.

Collin Beal I saw Rush in person for the 1st time in1976as a warm up band for BOC. Poor choice for BOC because Rush blew them out of the water. No one wanted Rush to leave the stage and the crowd was still screaming for Rush while BOC was playing. I saw Rush many times in concert and I agree she should have been analyzing a performance from the 70’s

My will includes the instructions to have these word inscribed on my tomb stone and attributed to N Peart. The 68 seconds of instrumental bridge that precedes this verse is, in my opinion the finest example of hard-grove-rock-bridge that has ever been performed. I suspect that the two combined have absolutely been the most striking influence of any sound or word on my life choices from my first hearing of them until this day. --and yes, Beth, although this verse does not include Geddy,s highest sung notes, it is certainly the most piercing you will hear from him. "Red Barchetta" is still top of th top for Rush. Awesome vocal performances, great song, and tells a really cool story... very theatrical. Either that, or "YYZ" :)

Great insight, love it!

Two things. 1. The drums "behind" the drummer...it's actually a revolving drum kit...so, at some points in time, the drums behind him are in front of him...and the drums in front of him are behind him. There are videos of his drum solos where he plays both portions of his drum kit and you can see the transition between acoustic and electronic kits. 2. If'n we're going to go down the path of later-era Rush, then it feels like songs written in the later years would be better to react to. My two later-era Rush recommendations. Try "Natural Science" from Permanent Waves. Ged really shows his range and dynamics.

RUSH! Wonderful to see you analyzing one of the greatest bands ever. Geddy's voice has changed quite a bit over the years - he can't quite hit those high notes as they were recorded anymore, but he modulates his vocals to make it work. Their stuff from the 70's and 80's (studio recordings, that is) will illustrate the difference, and give you a basis for comparison for this performance versus how the originals sound.

Beth...so enjoyed this video...huge Rush fan...and you where brilliant in the the way you broke down Geddy’s voice and expressions....two thumbs up👍👍

The drum rotates, that's how he gets those behind him :) Anyway, you should listen to the original version of 2112, when he starts singing... well, it absolutely blew my mind the first time I've heard it, and even my aunt (who was a opera singer for a very famous italian theater) was quite impressed.

A lot of the consonants accents you are hearing are mostly because he is Canadian. The thing that makes Rush one of the best bands ever is their musicianship. Getty is considered one of the best bass players out there.. and ohh yeah he also sings and plays the keyboards. Neil is considered the best rock drummer of all time by most of us who drum.. his technique is robot precise. Alex is a hugely underrated guitarist. Hope you do more Rush.. they are phenomenal

You are correct about everything except the sounds. Geddy didn't sing that way until he had to (exactly like she said: in order to hit the higher notes he no longer could without alteration)

If memory serves, and perhaps it doesn't, Geddy had a cold when this show was filmed.

Fun fact: Geddy Lee was actually sick during this performance - flue I believe; so he wasn't at actually at peak vocal performance.

Thank your for your analysis of the vocals. Being a bassist, I honestly had no idea, and it's very interesting to hear your take. Regarding the drums, in the nearly 30+ year career span of the video, there were songs that included electronic drums, so the drum kit would spin around to the front when songs from those albums would be played. The members of Rush were (and very much still are) masters of their craft, but Geddy's voice was always something of an acquired taste (and critics were often extremely nasty.) On the other hand, in a radio interview of Geddy and Alex, a DJ once asked Geddy how he was able to sing such high notes, and Alex said, "why don't you drop your pants and show him?"

I was there that night, epic show! I miss Rush in concert.
