I think Psy is known for adding satire and comical elements to his music which makes him stand out as an artist. That’s probably why he has lines where he sings in a nasal tone. I think he intentionally tries to sound like an average Joe to make his listeners feel like he’s just one of them, almost like taking on a character in a musical or something. In his early works, before Gangnam style fame, he had edgier lyrics confronting sociopolitical issues. But from what can be found online, he’s definitely a trained singer, rapper and songwriter.

With the specific part you're talking about sounding "nasily", it has mostly to do with the language. He's got a satoori accent, and his comedic style of singing is his iconic style lolol If you watch the behind the scenes, psy also mentioned wanting a 90s type style for the song. Specifically, 90s rap in korea lol. That style was very very nasily. You'll hear it a lot of you listen to anything by Seo Taiji

He collects some of the disowned or rejected members of the kpop community, gives them a home and they make straight up BANGERS. Jessi, Dawn, Hyuna, Crush... Ect... They all make such amazing music and often with a big f you to the industry somewhere in the lyrics hah.

Psy attended Berklee College of Music before he returned to South Korea to pursue his career as a singer so he's definitely trained, although I think his interest is more in songwriting and producing than vocal performance. PSY’s comeback slaps harder than Wil Smith slap-I mean PSY’s comeback is bigger and better than ever. That That is giving me such elevated upbeat song vibes. Gangnam Style feels like an unearthed memory from the past somehow. I totally vibe with those, still. Suga’s rap verse(s) makes That That much more lively. Though let’s be real honest, PSY’s vocals can sound very monotonous. No hate at all. Maybe it’s just his personal signatory as a performer.

  • @toddbrown5101

If you are going to insult PSY claiming he has a monotonous voice just goes to show that you know nothing of him and therefore maybe should do a little research before insulting him. He is a very talented man and has a successful music label of his own called P Nation. He likes to have a good time and never claimed to be a great vocalist. His music is parody. He is best know for Gangum style but he is so much more than that.

For example his songs in that concert "Paradise", "Someday" and "Goose's dream" show that he is quite good vocalist. Especially because he is soaring in the sky while singing those songs.. Suga, and the entire BTS rapline, could teach a thing or two about rapping to the current breed of American rappers. 1) They own the term "flow", they rap clearly (no mumbling), their raps say something, there is more than 6 words on repeat and all three have such unique and distinct sounds.

Found out about this channel and I really liked it! Your reactions are so fun to watch especially the kpop ones and I also learn somethings that can help me in my singing. I also observed that you're expanding in kpop reactions and I would really like to see your reaction about BTOB and MAMAMOO. They are considered as vocal groups because they usually focus more on vocals and have harder vocals in their songs. For BOTB i recommend their song "it's okay" which is one of their best songs and really showcases their strength. Make sure to listen to the live version to really see how amazing they are. For MAMAMOO I recommend their cover/rendition of the song "Delilah" which they covered in the singing competition "immortal songs". That cover was the reason why I stanned mamamoo because they gave a whole different vibe to the song while still catching the feeling of the original song. Both are also one of the fewer groups that ALWAYS sing live so it is hard to find a clip of them singing live. I'm excited to see more of your videos!

There's a great behind the scenes interview for this song on Psy's channel explains more about Psy and how he had to deal with the one hit wonder in US, then how the relationship between Suga and Psy developed as Suga was just supposed to produce the song, then ended up collaborating as a singer to being a dancer in the video. Really awesome video - the deep respect shown between youth and experience is beautiful!

Psy is actually classically trained surprisingly enough, but he though it was a complete waist of time 😂

There’s a video around of them in thx studio doing the ‘Min Yoon-gi and Park Jai-Sang’ line where Suga is deliberately mimicking Psy’s style/tone with that nasal quality you talk about and Psy is falling about laughing his head off. They just are having a blast, it’s amazing.

Agree, it's such a cool song, and extremely danceable!!! I hadn't thought about that nasal thing that you mentioned, but can hear it now. I think I've gotten so used to that sound that when I was listening to a new track of his (on his IG page), I was a bit confused, because it sounded quite different!! (but also very good). I think he's very good at using his 'talking voice' (in songs like That That). If I'm using the term correctly there!? Anyway.. great analysis, and - like this song - you have great energy!!!💛😊

The thing about psy is that he has his own company it's really interesting how it has grown and I am very proud of him with this song 💖💖💖 he also said that in one of an *interview* he was kinda struggling on whether he wanted to upload any songs he produce but it took him some years to upload AND he's also 45 😭😭😭 love him and his comeback

Psy has had a long and varied career! He does some comedy and satirical rap, like “Gangnam Style” and “Gentleman” but I think he also does some more serious tunes too. “That That” kinda falls somewhere in the middle of that spectrum! It’s still cheeky and playful, especially the music video nodding to “Gangnam Style” and having SUGA k-word that “old Psy,” but it’s still a real “post-pandemic” banger. I love how this song also shows the more playful side of SUGA too, as both a producer and a performer. He’s my BTS ultimate bias (tho OT7!) and he’s so so talented.
