It’s funny that you said movie songs are usually bad, because I feel like the Hunger Games franchise produced some of the best songs from certain artists. When I heard Olivia was writing a song I knew it was gonna be incredible, and I am so happy with her take on the like early 2010s alt folk vibe 👌🏻 You should do a reaction to both Jennifer Lawrence and Rachel Zegler’s versions of The Hanging Tree

The fact that you identified and pointed out that “shapenote singing” and then to learn that it’s 19th century American south type stuff - I mean seriously, Olivia changed her type of sound to fit what would be more accurate for the music of the time in the book and of the character she is writing for. And then to still keep her own style mixed in…she is talented and educated on so many levels. And watching you discover this without even knowing the backstory just gave me chills.

Tristan, you are GOOD! I suspect Olivia chose to incorporate that Southern style of singing with harmonies due to the persona she is singing from - Lucy Gray Baird in the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes... who is, in fact, a Southern character. Apparently heaps of the music sung by Rachel Zegler in the film is influenced by this specific style also! Good pick up.

I think this song has acoustic guitar because it's supposed to be like Lucy Gray (the female character in the book/movie) singing it with her guitar. And she's singing about the mountains (where she came from) and how they can't catch her (in the hunger games Snow tells her to run). Olivia did do a great job with this more folksy sounding genre and it shows how popular she is now if they chose her to sing this for the movie

the similiarities you noticed between olivia's layered vocals/singing style & shape note singing are actually almost definitely intentional choices! Music is a really big part of the story in book the new hunger games movie is based off of, and one of the main characters is a folk singer who's music is heavily inspired by early 20th century appalachian folk music, and the area she's from is based off of appalachia. The creative team behind the music actually released a bts video a while back, going through the process of finding that appalachian folk sound, working with a bunch of musicians who play in that style, and creating the melody and overall sound for the songs that are written out lyrically in the novel. It's pretty likely that olivia either got given a brief of what kind of sound she should incorporate into her song so it would be relatively cohesive with the rest of the movie soundtrack, or that she maybe even worked with some musicians more experienced in this appalachian style. It's cool that you picked up on that! It makes me excited to see how the rest of the songs in the movie sound in comparison

This song (the songwriting and sound structure and vocal choices so clearly made by Olivia) has me so excited for when/if she decides to pull a 'folklore' and dive into some fictional storyland so she can pair her gorgeous vocals (and harmonies!) with the brilliant, exaggerated, narrative style lyrical genius! I'm honestly like 82% more exicted for this movie than i was before this song came out. It paints such an "intrigue and newness" to The Hunger Games.

for context, this song is from the pov of Lucy Gray Baird, a girl who won the hunger games with the help of her lover, only for her to find out that the man is a psycho so she runs away, and she s the only one who knows that he killed someone, so now even tho she disappeared, the thought of her is everywhere, he can see her and hear her everywhere “in the trees, in the breeze” “im here im there im everywhrre” “you cant catch me now”, the mans name is also coryo snow, so snow is used as a metaphor in this song a lot

Reminds me of Fleet Foxes crosssed w Lorde...so essentially Lacy, but where that song is gorgeous and introspective, this one is gorgeous and has *teeth*

after watching the TBOSBAS featurette about the music in the movie and after seeing you point out the "19th Century American Southern Choir" music style in the bridge, i think that really was what they were aiming for. you spotting that just goes to show ig how Olivia and her team really pulled that style off

Wow it’s so crazy that u bring up shapenote singing because like the whole soundtrack is very folky and Appalachian and I would’ve never known about this otherwise. Olivia Rodrigo really did her homework on this one! Anyways I think u should go over the other songs on the soundtrack that Rachel Ziegler sang like Pure as The Driven Snow, Nothing You Can Take, and The Old Therebefore (those are my personal favorites) they are so good and I really wanna see ur reaction to them. Love ur vids!❤❤

The movie’s music is meant to be inspired by Appalachian folk and bluegrass music, so it probably isn’t a shock it sounds like shape note singing 🥹
