Tarja was sick with flu the day that concert was filmed, and still she nailed it. You should watch her singing live "Supremacy", her improvement since this concert is really out of this planet and she use more her chest voice than her operatic style.

I know this is a very old video but I love your explanations and comments! Marko and Tarja are SUCH a duo! One thing you might be interested to know is that Tarja actually has explained what you noticed about how she appears to be a mezzo-soprano but then hits notes that are considered really high for that range. She’s said that she IS a lyrical soprano, but that because Nightwish songs often required her to sing in more of a mezzo-soprano range, she ended up developing a stronger chest voice than a lyrical soprano would usually have.

I'm not an expert, but that distortion in Marco's voice might be because of the nerve damage in one of his vocal cords. He went through a surgery in the 90's to remove a polyp from that vocal cord, and the doctor had to force his way to get to that polyp. He didn't get his voice back after the surgery, and that's when he learned about the nerve damage. He had to train very hard to get most of his voice register back, but for example his clean falsetto is gone forever. His vocal cords just don't "synch" anymore. He later learned that the surgery was totally unneccessary and he could have learned to live with that polyp with some training.

@@scoreanimation4271 Well, a few people have purely Viking, or purely the inhertiage of any ethnic group. Many Finns are blonds, even more have blue eyes - though Finns are on the average about 1/4 of the 'viking' background, or more like Scandinavian. around 70% of the Finnish bloodline is Finno-Ugrian: the bloodline of North-Eastern Europe until the Ural mnts. and a bit beyond for thousands of years. Then there's around 5% of soemthing else, like Russian (Eastern European) & Westren European. The Western and Eastern European bloodlines are actually quite close genetic groups - the Scandinavians and the Finno-Ugric are different, as well as many Southern European nations. The Scandinavians have distant blood relatives in the Balkans. The Southern Europeans have at least the North African and Anatolian (already pre-Turkish) bloodlines, which appear somewhat elsewhere in Europe, but very little in Finland.

I'm just going to go ahead and throw this out there: I'm not into singing whatsoever, and I've never heard of you before, and the fact that I even stumbled upon and then proceeded to watch this video is nothing more than the result of random KZread video-binging from the past 2 hours, just jumping from subject to subject. I'm not trying to come off as a weirdo by saying this, but the only reason that I'm leaving this comment is because I just wanted to let you know that despite how good you may or may not be in the 'singing community', in my opinion you have one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, no question. I'm being honest too, your voice is among one of the most angelic. I've always felt that female vocalists have superior singing capabilities in general, and hearing you sing was a fantastic example of just how incredible the sounds from human vocal chords can really be, in my opinion anyways. Just wanted to let you know lol

C MINOR, not Major. (The original was in D minor). The E-flat in the chord is the give-away.

My favorite band. Thank you for this. Your breakdown was very insightful and I'm happy you gave some credit to Marko too. His vocals are always overshadowed in Nightwish, but he is a damn good singer too.

OK !! I could go on & on by saying that this is the first song of Nightwish that I heard & was hooked immediately with the band but I not going to :) What I am going to go on about is your voice !! Damn youve got a wonderful soprano voice & I was wondering if you have any songs on youtube with you singing a full song ? Ha Ha !! Hearing you sing this one would be wonderful & dreamy :)

SO COOL! Thank you for this reaction! It helps to understand the structure of the song, the choices that were made and why - very informative!! (and very impressive, especially when you hit THAT notes) If you`re looking for suggestions, you may like reacting to "Lee Hongki, Yoo Hweseung - Still love you" - these two are COMPLETE vocal monsters!! One of the most complicated, soulfull songs in rock-balad genre you`ll ever hear!

Thank you for your professional critique. There are many opinions of "vocal coach reacts to xxxxx" between Tarja an Floor, and it seems like a war between two rival football teams. I first heard Nightwish on a business trip to Finland in the late 90s. I thought it was weird to hear opera vocals mixed with power metal ( I'm a fan of power, thrash, doom, classic), but strangely alluring. I forgot about them until I ran across a Wishmaster CD and picked it up. Been a fan ever since. You should check out their early live TV appearance with "Gethsemane" and "Sacrament of the Wilderness"
