It's interesting to see how James has evolved as a singer over the years. I've seen in the second half of his career where he spends a lot of time warming up and taking care of his vocal cords. I hear his singing being much clearer and more enunciated. A lot of other metal/rock singers show they haven't.

This is my favorite Metallica song of all. That lead never fails to transport me to a different time, and not just when I 1st heard it. I'll still get goosebumps listening !! I have most still on CD, and had the Black cassette long before any of my friends. They played it non-stop, and then I had to listen in their vehicles, and by the time the radio overplayed it was sick and burnt on it. Until then I thought it their best work, and even above Master. Just my own personal feelings, and also believe Hetfield an underrated guitarist 🎸🤘

Metallica as a group are gods, they are masters of playing in the pocket. They are so raw and powerful with a mix of beautiful skill. Credit to James Hetfield he is an atom bomb on this song, his voice has evolved with age and the power and energy he brings to his live performances is something else. Projects at the crowd MASTER and you can’t help but scream back master with him. On top of this the man is playing a guitar, with his signature down picking, controlling breathing, interacting with the crowd and keeping in time with his fellow band mates. James Hetfield… we salute you!

Hey, Beth, you should react to John Bush. When James felt insecure about his singing abilities, he wanted John to be Metallica's vocalist. John is the vocalist of Armored Saint and was the vocalist for a while of Anthrax (another band of the Big 4 of thrash metal). I would recommend "Reign of Fire" from Armored Saint and "Only" from his time in Anthrax

Hey Beth, obviously this is a live version. Would be cool to know your thoughts about the studio version from 1986
Its not just about drugs , its about anything that takes control of you by any reason , James said it himself in an interview . Curiosity : This album was considered the 2nd best metal album of all times by The Rolling Stones Magazine in 2017 , only behind Paranoid by Black Sabath .
Just so nice to see you enjoying this song soo much! Thabk you for the reacting video!
The melody halfway through is so soothing. Like this big thick heavy song and then this beautiful classical and beautifully composed melody... ah, this song catches out the unexpecting.
this has probably been said before, but just in case, the flow of the song is meant to represent the various instances of addiction: the first part was the need, the want for the drug. the second part was the high, that euphoria that comes with it. and finally, the crash and the return to the need, expressing the endless cycle of addiction
Love that you review some of the older stuff.
Nice new format Mrs Roars 🙏🏻

I think it’s awesome that James still uses the same “tape” that he received from his vocal coach back in the eighties as a warm up before he goes onto stage, even now. No matter what era of Metallica you like, James is still an amazing front man!!!
The shifts in tempo reflect the various moods of the abuser; first, the intense anxiety of needing a fix; next, the peaceful high itself (hence the calm melody); finally, the resulting anxiety that follows and their need for another fix.
I love the bass in this mix. And yeah, James looooves using reverb in his songs for added effect. A famous example is For Whom The Bell Tolls
Beth i think your screen stop of Robert and 10:50 is SUCH a great shot of him, a great bass player and shows exactly the atmosphere ...perfect!
I've never seen this live video before, but I had a sneaking suspicion that it was filmed in Vancouver, especially in the narrative scenes, and it was confirmed when I saw the "W Hastings St" street sign! Always fun to see my hometown in unexpected places.
They are truly masters of their craft. If you ever get the chance the see them live, don't miss it. They are phenomenal.
Beth love you you bring so many people joy thank you
It's not just about the vocals, but playing this song and singing at the same time. This is a fast and technical song to play on guitar, it's definitely not easy. Then sing at the same time? Dang, I don't know how he does it so easily. I would feel much more comfortable playing guitar only, being able to look at the neck and my fingers.. but he does it all while putting on the front man show for the crowd too. So talented
As a note, Towards the end of the song, beginning of the last verse, where he sings, "Hell is worth all that," the way he leads in and sings that particular line is an ode to Lemmy from Motorhead.
i've loved this song for 30 years and i'm glad its getting the respect it deserves now!!
Great band, one of the first I saw live as a very young teenager, on the tour for the Black album. 🤘😄
Such a great song and everytime I see Old School with the van scene with Master of Puppets being played I laugh everytime
This was the second song I heard from Metallica. My sister had 2 boys in school who liked her and knew she was a fan. They both bought her a vinyl copy of the album for her birthday one year, and she gave me one of them since she obviously didn't need 2. This is the second track on the album. I still remember the first time I heard it, with my headphones in my turntable. I couldn't sit still. Been hooked on this band ever since.
Agreed, I love symphonic solos much more than a solo that is just trying to be complex. So I don't mind simple if it fits amazing.
I was 14 in '87 and saw them on Puppets tour, they opened up for Ozzy 🤘
I was in the crowd for this in Vancouver. The movie is Through the Never.
This film is so awesome!!!! I loved it
I believe that concert was filmed in Edmonton over a couple of nights if I'm not mistaken. Would have loved to be there
I always attributed the variety in Metallica's songs to the classical influence, which was one of the things that drew me to love them, the classical influence, the perfectly distorted guitar riffs, the epic solos, and the genius storytelling lyrics. Only recently have I come to appreciate James vocals. He may not have a huge vocal range, but he certainly conveys the emotion effectively and with passion.
Beth Roars, what you mentioned about how the singer James Hetfield ends some of his notes with the "Ahhh". like "Fearaaaaa...that has actually always been a trademark of his. If you listen to alot more of their music you will hear that he does that alot! In my personal opinion James is one of the most underrated singers. This man had always had great skills and even now decades later he still slays in live performances. You should listen to more! Also his softer side like the song "Nothing Else Matters"
James is a musical genius ..... Plain and simple
You should do a Concert series where you go to shows. That would be loads of fun for you and great content.
Through The Never is a concert live film, so this whole song is recorded live and the story clips were recorded separately and edited in Also, this show was about 2/3rds of the way through a world tour that went on for close to 3 years
Loved this song since 1986. Top 3 greatest metal songs and albums.
Amazing⚡
They had the rehearsal for the movie in Edmonton Alberta at Rexal Place what a show then moved to Vancouver BC in Rodgers Place for the filming 🎥 Saw the Edmonton show 👍 Seen Metallica a total of five times always a great show 👏
This is at least twice as fast as the original recording as well. One thing Metallica have a habit of doing, especially during the 80s and early 90s, iss playing everything so much faster live, then add to that James Hetfield downpicks most of his rhythm parts on the guitar you understand why people refer to him as a machine and a master of downpicking (not puppets, lol). He's even said himself that he plays the guitar like a drum kit as he really wants that percussive sound from it when he plays

After scrolling through all your videos you've missed one singer that has a massive vocal range Linda Ronstadt. You need to react to her song Blue Bayou. She is an equivalent to Floor Jansen just predating her by 3 decades. You will not be disappointed making a reaction to her and that song. Now to this reaction, it was cool you noticed the message in the song.
What i think is I love this song and your reaction to it..
This is different from how he used to sing. From after the black album era he started doing proper vocal exercises due to blowing out his voice.
MASTERPIECE !!! 🎧🎼🖤🤘
Hey Beth. I am glad who so enjoyed the performance. In your free time you owe it to yourself to listen to the original studio version of this, if you haven't already.
When I started to get into Metallica my son was always going on about this song, and I thought yeah, it's a pretty good song. But then, we went to see them live for the first time. I got it, I totally got it. Watching them perform it live, it takes on a whole new life of it's own. This isn't a song, it's a living legend. Trying to learn this in the drums has been a challenge. But an incredibly fun one. The time signature changes aren't a problem. They feel right. It's the bass that gives me the most problems, the abductor in my thigh goes numb with the fast repetitions and pace, I lose the beat 🤣. Getting better with each playthrough, but I don't care what you say about Lars, still playing that live? Props to the guy for endurance.
saw them live in 1986 when this was the tour!! James Hetfield did the show with one arm in a sling and a roadie playing guitar off stage. Freakin' awesome!
The perfect song to me! Been a fan since 1985! 💜🤘🏻💜
I was one of the extras in that music video, it was so epic.
If you'd like to see a "live" performance that shows how they've transcended their style, watch their performance of Moth Into a Flame with Lady Gaga at the 2017 Grammy's
When any band/artist says: "We didn't like the acoustics of that studio" IMHO it is a polite way of saying they didn't get along with the people they had to work with/situation/etc. at said studio. (OR, the band just couldn't pull it off/wasn't yet ready to make the album yet!) I really don't think it has very much ever actually been about the "sound of the room"! (At least, not for a rock-band that since the late 60's record instruments non-acoustically!)
Great reaction Beth! My favorites are some of the less popular songs like Bleeding me, Wasting my hate, Poor Twisted Me. The rage of the band and James is pretty staggering.
Metalhead friend of mine went nuts when King Gizzard dropped the Infest The Rat's Nest... He said it was the best Slayer album not released by Slayer in 2019... It also features great clichés from Black Sabbath and some amazing Hetfeild-isms that just makes it an awesome tribute album to 80's metal!!
Saw them with Queensryche in Providence, RI on the …And Justice For All tour. 1988 or 89 I think.
Juxtoposition of dynamics is what rock/metal is about mostly. Like Smashing Pumpkins little lullaby clean guitar parts next to 30 track of fuzzed out big muff guitar
its fantastic story telling and i think uses the slow simple section similar to Iron Maidens Rime of the ancient mariner.
Grandes Metallica y grande Beth! Saludos desde España.
Just became a sub and looked back and perhaps I missed it but has there been a Slaughter To Prevail reaction here?
You have to check out the S&M version of Master of Puppets they did with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra!!! The orchestral arrangement is just as EPIC & POWERFUL as the original arrangement. Full blown Metallica plus a full blown orchestra equals a musical masterpiece 🤘
Credit goes to their long time Sound Engineer Big Mick Hughes who have developed the band’s live sound making them more potent. They chose Sweet Silence in Copenhagen to record MOP because of the familiarity with Producer Flemming Rassmusen and the longer studio time vs recording in LA Plus Lars was Danish so the connection was there

The reason this song is so epic is because every single line has meaning. This track transcends taste in many ways. It’s not only the lyrics, but the stages the lyrics go through. This is basically a journey through a ‘big hit and comedown’. Classic tracks are classic for a reason. Nothing to do with ‘Stranger Things’ lol

Thanks for doing this Beth! The motion picture you might be referring to was Old School in 2004. Its the song that plays over a pledge kidnapping montage. Also, Lars didn't pick an American studio because of acoustic, he picked a studio in Denmark so he could stay with friends while the rest of the band had to sleep in a studio loft. Eventually the other three guys got fed up with these scheme and pulled his card to record in an American studio for the selt-titled album.
