The difference is probably that Elis was freaking pissed off when she sang that song. She was singing about the dictatorship she was living at the time. Right now we can sing with emotion but not the anger they felt back then. Mother and daughter have different styles, of course, but that anger that drove Elis is not present anymore and that shows

There's plenty of anger from the current scenario, to be fair. But I don't want to turn this into another political debate.

@@alack87 I agree, but Maria Ritas version was sang in another context than we are living now. I guess right now I relate to this song in a very different way than I did some years ago.

You are right. Maria Rita's emotion is more lovely, like a daughter singing a song made famous by her mother. While Elis was piss.

Masterpiece!
Maria Rita was quite criticized in Brazil for trying to "mimic" her mother, which took a toll on her and made her avoid Elis' repertoire. This concert tour is the only time she sang her mother's hits. Apart from that she goes for something quite different and tailored to her voice. A great artist in her own right.

its really sad, because her take on her mother's musics are great. though I agree her own stuff sounds a lot better for her, I love how "sassy" she is when singing.

Different styles. Elis was not a samba singer and Maria is not her mother.

Quando as pessoas falam que ela tenta imitar a voz da mãe dela, eu fico tipo, ela é FILHA da Elis, a voz dela lembra a voz da Elis porque ela é FILHA dela.
As I said in your analysis of Elis, this is a protest song, made at the time of the dictatorship in Brazil. When Maria Rita sings, the protest tone gives way to a tribute to her mother. that's why Maria Rita's interpretation sounds more lovely and calm.
Maria Rita is now one of the greatest singers in Brazil. She can sing samba like nobody’s business with a lot of balance in her voice. It would be quite interesting you react to this. Thanks for this video. Maria Rita - Cara Valente Maria Rita - Coração em Desalinho

Thanks for reacting to Maria Rita. I asked you to. Maria Rita was 4 years old when her mother died.
Beautiful!! The song she is singing was one of the most famous in her mother's voice, Elis: "Like our parents". The lyrics of this song are particularly very important and sad for us Brazilians, because it refers to the tragic period of the military dictatorship in the 60s and 70s, where many people were tortured, disappeared or killed, including many artists.
Elis Regina's version was filled with anger (because of the moment that song was released), Maria Rita's version is filled with irony , for us who understand Portuguese, can make a connection between the words and her body language.

You should to hear "Cara Valente", that song was recorded by her and is one the most famous. About "Como nossso pais", she never recorded any music of her mother before that. In the begging, she always wanted to do her solo career and not be a shadow of her mother. But with her fame and over the years, she wanted to record a dvd with her mother’s songs, in her honor. Thanks a lot for reacting a brazilian music!!
If I can suggest the greatest singer from Brazil, her name is Maria Bethania There's a list of great songs in her voice: Reconvexo Santo Amaro Ê Ê Kirimure Francisco, Francisco Memorias do Mar Capitão do Mato Hope you like it ;)

This singer is the daughter of our late Elis Regina, unfortunately already deceased ... Elis Regina has already been analyzed by you on this channel, singing the same song that your daughter, Maria Rita, is singing in this video. A kiss, and success to you, Beth Roars!
So sweet voice. Like you said, they tell situations with the whisper of the beauty of Brazil. That peace, that swing. I thing than at Portugal colonialism, they song "fados", a very emotional type of music. I love youuu Beth!! Your voice Is so sweet, and your comments so positives, I think your fallen in love with music, like me, that, s the cause we get emotional and we smile with every song I thing!!! Well, I pleased you one more time, in the name of music, in the name of history, In the name of a great artist and great great person so sweet, who loves her family and music. He was in a birthday party, he was only 7 years, the family pleased to listen that small child. They put him over a table, he closed his eyes and song. When he opened her eyes, he saw tears in the eyes of family, at that moment he understood music is the reason of her life, cause he was born with a great capacity of take soooo many air and with a only breathe.,make fasetto up and down realizing like waves than goes and comes. That, s the reason I, m doing all that. You (sorry for the next words) must meet Antonio Molina. I thing you, re gonna cry cause his voice was unique. I never never never heard someone singing seems he song. Believe me. I send you all my better wishes beautiful musical princess.
So many good vocal tips Beth. I can use them. Often it comes down to the style we sing. Once you start extending the range past c5 (for women) then the technique will change. I think that's where the "mix" comes into play. Maria Rita stays well within the chest voice range so she can "speak" on pitch very effectively. --Edit: I like how she gets her mouth open by tilting her head back rather than just dropping her jaw. This seems to work for a lot of singers.
Man I just love your accent
a interpretação corporal também é belíssima!!!! ... the body interpretation is also beautiful !!!!

The difference between the kind of emotion Elis Regina and Maria Rita show during the sing are definetely noticeble, as you point out and, idk if you got to read about Elis during some research or something, but this song was written (by Belchior, another excellent brazilian songwriter and singer) and recorded (by her) during the roughest years of the brazilian military dictatorship. Elis often used to criticize the government (in her songs and during enterviews)and saw many friends being persecuted for protesting against the regime (the main theory is that she herself was not persecuted mainly because of her major popularity and talent - that got her fans even among the oppressors). Anyway, this song is a vivid criticism of the brazilian social and political contex at that time (during the 70's) and she puts her angry and her heart to it (i believe) because she was living it, intensely. Maria Rita, her daughter, however, even though extremely talented as well, recorded the video you used in the review in 2012, when brazil had already 24 years of democracy. The political and social context was completely different and, not trying to diminish Maria Rita in any way, but it wasn't an angry moment for Brazil. We was having then some stability and life, although not perfect, was kinda nice. Nowadays brazil seems to be coming back to that mess we were in the 70's. And Maria Rita is indeed pretty talented, maybe you get to review some video of her singing with the same emotion, passion and angry her mother showed many years ago. I sincerely hope not.
essa coroa eh top demais
Maria Rita have a long career as singer. She start to sing MPB (with jazz/blues influences) and in the last years she has singing Samba more frequently. So, I would like you watch this video of her (2005) when she sing with more dramatic and intensity way that was characteristic of Elis. I wish you like it.
Singing this song is a big responsibility. It gives me thrills

Hello Beth, I'm a big fan of yours and I love your enthusiasm and since you seem to like Brazilian singers, please, if you have time, react to Gal Costa and Luiz Melodia singing Pérola Negra. It has a jazz vibe I think you are going to appreciate. Besides, their voices are great!
Nice review. Maria Rita finded her style after began very similar to Elis. This interpretation keeps some hommages to the immortal performance of her mother. If I may, I would like to suggest you to listen to Secos e Molhados - Rosa de Hiroshima. It was recorded in the 70’ from a poem by Vinícius de Moraes. I strongly recommend that you read the translated lyrics and listen the great interpretation of the singer Ney Matogrosso. It’s a very short song (aboit 2 minutes), but the message is extremly intense and I am sure that you will be touched. There is no one who can’t feel the power of this song. Everytime I listen I pay attention to each word, all meanings and got emotional.

Try "Escrito nas estrelas" by Tetê Espíndola. 1985 "Festival of Festivals" Winner. Tetê was called "The girl with birds at her troath".
Maria Rita is a great singer, but fight against comparisions to her mother since she decided to follow the same carrer. And her father is a great maestro too.
You should see Maria Rita in her older presentations like 'muito pouco' live version
Started watching your videos on your reaction to Normandie, just found this amazing female metalcore singer you should check out. Her band is Amber Town, she's Elektra Amber.
The lyrics of this music are really deep and bring a lot of political things for Brazilian history! When Elis Regina recorded that song, Brazil was in really difficult times... with a dictatorial government... If you are interested, I suggest to search the meaning of the lyrics and then you could be able to understand better why the interpretations are so different. And, even more than that... The song says “we try to do a lot of different stuff, but we still doing the same things as our parents”... and Elis Regina died when Maria Rita was very young... so I guess the meaning for Maria Rita is so much deeper than she let us see!
Hey Beth, listen Ana Carolina e Seu Jorge, "É Isso Aí" great song and performance.
