@Happines With less S nah, Lea didn’t really have mamba mentality. She was faced with the critical judgment of being a woman of color in general. Producers in Broadway wouldn’t accept her just for her being Asian, and the audience, because of the general bias for a white person rather than a person of color, would’ve picked her to death and declared her incapable of singing on the big stage if she made a single mistake. So Lea made sure to never make a single mistake. She made sure there would be purely no reason for them to say these things, no reason to say she’s not good, no reason to say that she’s not fit for the part. And the crazy thing is she wasn’t doing it to compete with others. She was doing it to survive and live her dream as a Broadway singer.

There was an article about her being in different key in the making of "Miss Saigon", turns out that she was the only one in the right key. Everyone else got it wrong even the orchestra. She's perfect when it comes to singing.

She is the best singer alive today. We should all be grateful we exist the same time as Lea Salonga. It hurts me physically how underrated outside of broadway she is.

@@ediersonbaliguat8619 I just did. She sings that song almost exclusively in head voice, with an operatic technique. She has good projection and all but it is not what you call a 'belt' in singing. If you want to hear an example of high belting listen to Defying Gravity by Willemijn Verkaik - I hope you'll hear the difference. Belting or mixing does not make a singer a bad or a good singer. It is a choice. If anything, mixing is much healthier for the voice, and Lea is a perfect example of it.

This is what I love about Lea Salonga. Pronunciation of words are always on point. When she’s singing you’ll understand all the lyrics of the song. I can learn how to pronounce English words properly by listening to her. I love listening to singers that do pronounce the words well and not being lazy. Lea Salonga to me is 100% quality.

This is the first time I saw you GENUINELY enjoy what you're watching. You were so excited the whole time. She's like the personification of what you've been teaching.

I´m a Brazilian guy with only a middle to good english understanding and I can understand EVERY word she is singing. Her voice is perfect.

You can't expect anything less coming from a multi-awarded artist with a Tony and Olivier awards to name a few under her belt. Also the singing voice of Jasmine and Mulan of Disney.

She IS the definitive Eponine. But it was as Kim in Ms Saigon that she won both the Tony's and Olivier award. She is simply amazing!

Besides all her vocal excellence, I noticed perfect breathing technique with NO gasping or unnecessary breath noise. She started each phrase with slow breath intake using the available time and then set her abs/diaphragm so as to start with no breath sound. This enabled her to carry over that last phrase with ease. You are right, Tara. It was as close to perfect as can be done! Thanks for your technical discernment and clear and concise analysis!

@@jorin15 That's why I wish Tara would respond to say yea or nay and/or explain it better. To me it's fundamental to breath control while singing. Tara and/or anyone else may do it some other way or call it by another name but some method must be used. Singers need to control their air some way. I'd dearly like to know what Tara advocates but so far she has not chosen to reply. I don't even know if she gets alerts on these comments. In the mean time, keep singing!

Learning how to hold your breath is common in singling lessons. Honestly, 25 seconds isn't even a crazy amount of time for holding your breath--it's just long if you're also singing, and thus letting air out the entire time. I got up to like 45 seconds, yet I could only hold out a note for like 15 before it became a mess.

Hello Tara! I'm a highly trained lyric baritone. Because of neck damage and deterioration I have to take nerve meds, which affect my vocal control, so I'm not able to sing anymore, which makes my wife extremely sad (she's a fantastic cellist). But, I understand pure Bel Canto practical application in the real world, and how it applies to any kind of singing (except maybe rap), and frankly, you're one of the best at describing its techniques. Thank you for your expertise, and more, that you share it openly. It's a rare person who shares their knowledge. I do so recognize others who do. And one thing I've found is those who are truly gifted typically are the most eager to share. And I concur on the ending. Perfect presentation, consistency, and focus. Wow!

Her “blind” is everything. That’s the note of the song tho. Best blend of all time.

Back again.. I can't tell you how many times I've watched this. I'm nerding out with you Tara!!

Lea is such a vocal coach favorite. She is very technical in every sense of the word yet so emotive and a very capable singer. also a prime example of vocal preservation. At her age she is still singing with finesse although her vocal quality changed obviously, her technique is pretty much in tact. Awesome reaction as always!!!

Lea is the only singer who never failed in any performances. The total perfection.

Am soooooooo glad I found someone who really knows how to really react so so so brilliantly and truthfully with lots of logical and practical examples and explanations. Girl, keep reacting on LEA SALONGA

I suggest Alison Luff's take on "She Used to be Mine" a great example where you need not sacrifice technique for emotion and feel. In two months it has garnered nearly a million views. Highly recommended for a vocal coach like you.

Technically she is flawless but i dunno, i liked the interpretation and emotions of Shoshana’s version better.

@@arthlauren30 Shoshana's video in 8 months got over 700,000 views. Alison's video in over 2 months garnered over 1 million views. It may be true that the more views doesn't guarantee better quality in many cases but in this case it does. 😆

She is the reason why I fell in love with broadway and musical theatre. This performance is one of my most favorite of her.

I really liked Lea since I was a child, she's just so admiring. And I also love the way how you talked on this whole vid. You're so fun to watch and listen to!

I love how you’re geeking out over this! Best reaction to this Lea performance. I was born in the Philippines (now living in US) and she was (and is) my idol as soon as I learned how to speak and sing. I started singing because of her. I believe I still have her very first album in a cassette form when she was a child singer. She’s a rare gem.

I actually know Lea's On My Own is perfect but now I understand why it's perfect. Thanks Tara!

Princess Jasmine and Mulan, plus she won a Tony award at 19! (20?) for Miss Saigon, Lea Solanga is most definitely a force! Les Mis is my favorite musical, and this particular concert of it is one-of-a-kind to be sure. It was the 10th anniversary concert and featured amazing singers like Lea, Michael Ball, Judy Kuhn (Pocahontas), and more! You'll cry, laugh, and cry again a few more times. So good!

She also won the Laurence Olivier Award on West End (London) for the same musical, Miss Saigon.

Lea Salonga's performances are mesmerizing. She is so good and her long musical career is a testimony of her greatness.

Gives me chills every time I listen to this performance. I think no matter how many times I've watched this, it gives me goosebumps.

Loved your reaction. I wanted to be the one to take my great-niece to her first concert. I managed to get front row tickets to Lea Salonga. I was a little worried that she would not enjoy all of the concert other than the Disney songs but didn't need to worry. On the way to the car after the concert, she was skipping and dancing and asking how Lea could sing without taking breaths. She was 8 but she noticed. I earned some major best aunt ever points that night. Lea was amazing.

Rewatching this,and once more getting excited by your enthusiasm and indepth commentary throughout this song.Lea is so amazingly good.

I love Tara! I just saw you just today on KZread but your videos are kind of my Netflix right now. You give technicalities in singing plus providing crazy high notes that demonstrate how you should nail a difficult note.

No one can even question her technicality, she's a legend that EVERY Broadway singer look up to.

Lea Salonga was one of the female singers in the Philippines who was known worldwide. Not only that, she also sang for Disney. Probably because of her pronunciation are easy to hear, since Disney is mostly based on movies for children, the kids that will watch will have an easier understanding for the song, even for adults!

she is a great singer coz you can feel what she is singing and it's crystal clear. it's amazing feeling evrytime she open her mouth hearing those clear words & the texture magnificent!

i love that she mixes and not belts on the high note ("known") as opposed to other singers, particularly samantha barks who's played eponine in the movie. it's not anger, it's defeat. eponine knows marius will not love her back but cannot change her feelings for him, thus the 'i love him's. lea is pretty much the only person i've seen that understood that in their portrayal of eponine.

Tara, if you haven’t seen the recording of her audition for Miss Saigon, I highly recommend it. I believe she was 15 at the time. She went on to win a Tony, I believe. And she won the Tony at the age of 20.

This is probably my favorite reaction of all. I love Tara's expressions and fangirling all over lea. She even does that very filipino expression "nyeh" in the end. But most of all i admire her technical ear for music especially pronunciation.

Yeah. She’s the best. Tony award says it all. We must not forget the hours of coaching and rehearsals she spent to get to this point. Taught from childhood and by the best talents in this production.. Song writers, producers, directors. She was chosen as the best of her generation and then shaped and molded by the best of their generation. Lea Salonga. Filipina.
