If you like the gabber after the drop, it is the part of the song produced by paul elstak. He is the one that started this music and is the godfather of gabber, hardcore and happy hardcore. If you like this song you may also like 90s happy hardcore like luv u more, rainbow high in the sky, have you ever been mellow or wonderfull days. This is all typical Dutch music so I don't know if Americans know of these. Just a listening tip!

Thanks for your response. Joost's father died of cancer when he was 12 years old and within a year his mother also died of heart failure. His father had always told him that there are no boundaries. That the borders are made by the people. He always told his father that he would one day take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. They always watched it together. The song is a letter to his father, and at the end he wants to say that he is now moving on with his life, but that he has listened to his father. Kind regards from the Netherlands 🥰

Thanks for the explanation- helps to have the context which tbh I wish Georgina had checked first. I’m also under the impression that the fire part at the end is the concern over the future of the open and welcoming Europe that Joosts father had loved so much?

She does mention in a previous video that for the sake of editing the video it seems like she pauses every two seconds and she also has a short explaining why she does that. It’s down to avoiding copyright strikes on her content. But she does say in this aforementioned video (not the short) that she does listen to the whole thing.

There's that and butchering a song without even trying. I will reiterate; even without the background story merely looking at the streaming numbers it's obviously not just some silly song. Seriously looking at the lyrics, and taking into account she's not reading the lyrics of a song in English, but the translation into English alone is enough to dispel the ridiculous notion that he's 'celebrating europop'. It's all so off the mark that the only conclusion can be that she did a hatchet job because she couldn't be arsed to seriously try. Not even in the time she supposedly had during her editorial breaks. Finally, other people managed to react without cutting every half sentence. Merely stopping at relevant moments and if necessary going a bit back will take care of any copyright issues. What we saw was someone not even trying to understand why a song that was just silly to her is a serious contender. That alone should be reason for her to try better. I have seen dozens of reactions of people who made a point of this not being for them, yet trying to understand why this could win.

The song is actually a bit sad. As others already stated, he lost his parents at a very young age. There are a lot of double meanings / connections to his parents and surely i am missing something but ill try to name some: Like the song is called "euro-papa" because papa is dad in dutch. He is singing that he goes to other places but he feels lonely. He lost everything except time. he is struggeling He is giving people money but nobody is helping him. He went to mental healthcare but they could not help him. He is talking about the song Papaoutai from stromae. Papa outai means "dad is here" and the phrase Où t'es? Papa où t'es? means Where are you? Dad where are you? check out the lyrics of that song too :) He is also mentioning "i wont stop until they say, yes he does that very well" because he is seeking pride from his parents. The ending is pretty clear but i think he is talking to his dad and his younger him and he tells his dad that he listend to him. Also the burning picture and burning house stands for him closing that chapter and he wants to move on and dont want to feel the pain anymore. while he was in therapy they used burning stuff to let go the old

No thanks for this reaction. At first I wasn't going to react to it but then I decided better. There was something very wrong about it and it could be summed up best with the word prejudice. Very early in the video you decided this song wasn't for you. You're entitled to have an opinion and it doesn't have to be that you like this song. But there was very much wrong with your repeated assertion that this was some celebration of 'europop'. As if the vague similarity of the word pop in English with the word Papa (father in a bunch of languages) was sufficient to explain everything. Another thing was that you watched a video with 14 million views as you made your comment. That is an incredible amount of views for a mere entry to Eurovision. Still does not mean you have to like it, but it would have merited at least an attempt as to why this song is going viral. Or is an actual hit in The Netherlands and Belgium. You chose to do no such thing. You chose to butcher the song and its flow to the point that it became impossible at all to know what Joost Klein is doing with this song. And for that you don't need to know Dutch or know the backstory. All you need to know that you were taken along on a manic rollercoaster ride with a depression waiting right at the end. I can forgive you for not knowing everything. I can't forgive you for not trying. You need to do better. You lost my respect and I will unsubscribe after posting this.

You took the words right out of my mouth. And I like to add: some things might get lost in translation and I expect someone who reacts to songs in different languages often, might take that in consideration. But the way she skipped over 'Papaoutai' by Stromae felt kind of forced. Because come on, that is one of the biggest European hits ever. I don't expect everyone to get every reference, but don't blame your ignorance on the songs quality.

I think you're being a tad dramatic in all honesty. She clearly has a very different way of processing what she's hearing. It's her channel after all and she posts what she's genuinely seeing and feeling, and she doesn't have to agree with the masses or even understand the song on first listen. Sometimes some people need a few more listens to understand and process what they're hearing. That said, you are entitled to unsubscribe if you feel that her content isn't to your liking any more. I myself unsubscribed because I couldn't hack the constant pausing just to repeat what she was witnessing with the visuals, which we can all already see. "Oh hes got a tshirt on". "Oh theres a fire" etc etc. I would much rather know what someone thinks of the song in musical terms, such as the melody, the chords, the vocals, the song structure etc. She's a lovely person however, and I do respect her reactions being as organic and natural for her. I'm sure there are plenty of people on youtube who love the content.

Why I think Europapa is a masterpiece: Knowing his background stories (lost both parents at a very young age, got depressed and dedicated this song to his father) and being a Dutch native speaker myself, I thought, why not translate Europapa, explaining the deeper meaning of the song (its my personal take on the song and not verified of course (Joost knows) but I think it makes a lot of sense. Have a read: --> Welkom in Europa, blijf hier tot ik dood ga (Welcome in Europe, I'll stay here till I die) Welcome in a world without borders, without constraints. I will never let myself be constricted. --> Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa (Euro-dad-dy, Euro-dad-dy) --> Bezoek m'n friends in France (I visit my friends in France) 'Friends' translated in France is 'Amis' Amis was author of e.g. 'Invasion of the Space Invaders' and 'Money'. Joost didn't visited friends in a country, he identified himself with characters in books. --> Of neem de benen naar Wenen. (or take a walk to Vienna) In Dutch 'de benen nemen' has two meanings. Litterary is means 'to walk', but figuratively it means 'running away' Same counts for 'Wenen'. Translated to English can mean 'the capital of Austria 'Vienna' but can also be translated to 'crying'. So, it can mean 'walk to Vienna' or 'running away to despair' --> Ik wil weg uit Netherlands, maar m'n paspoort is verdwenen (I want to leave the Netherlands, but my passport is gone) I want to run away from my childhood, run away from my pain, but I lost my identity. I don't know who I am anymore, I'm lost. --> Heb gelukkig geen visum nodig om bij je te zijn (I don't need a visa to be with you) There's is nothing what can stop me to be with you, you are in my heart. --> Dus neem de bus naar Polen (So I take the bus to Poland) Besides transportation, a bus is also a conductor. Polen, in Dutch, is the plural of pool. In English poles. So magnetism. With a balance of positive and negative ends. --> of de trein naar Berlijn (or the train to Berlin) First; the Berlin Wall was the symbol of the Cold War and a divided Europe. The fall of the Berlin Wall symbolizes the start of a united Europe. Second; the track 'Friesenjung' of Joost Klein is co-written by his friend, the Berlin rapper Ski Aggu. --> Ik heb geen geld voor Paris, dus gebruik m'n fantasie (I don't have money for Paris, so I use my imagination) Paris is the city of love. But there's no currency in the world that can buy his father back. He only can use his imagination to be reunited with his father --> Heb je een еuro'tje, please? Zеg "merci" en "alsjeblieft" (can you spare a euro, please? Say "merci" en "here you are") Can I have a bit of your wealth, please? In return I will share a bit of my love with you. --> Ik ben echt alles kwijt behalve de tijd (I lost everything, except the time) I lost everything what's important to me (his parents) the only thing that remains is the time he has left in his life, without his father a burden. --> Dus ben elke dag op reis want de wereld is van mij (So I'm travelling every day because the world is mine) He's running, searching, trying to find something. Every day over and over and again in a world where he feels lonely. --> Ich bin in Deutschland, aber ich bin so allein (I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone) The track 'Friesenjung' was a huge hit in Germany. He made it in Germany, but he can't share his successes with the one who is most inportant to him. --> Io sono in Italia, maar toch doet het pijn (I'm in Italy, but it hurts) In his track 'Ome Robert' Joost sings (well actually screams), 'Who are you? I'm a god!'. But even the gods of the Roman empire are not enough to soothen the pain. --> Ben aan het vluchten van mezelf, roep de hele dag om help (I'm running away from myself, call for help the whole day) I don't want to be the person as I am today, don't want to feel the pain anymore. But I can't do this on my own. I need help. Perhaps he asks his dad for help but realizes he is on his own. --> Ja, ik geef zelfs mensen geld, maar d'r is niemand die me helpt (Yes, I even give money to people and organizations, but there's nobody who helps) I need help and I'm willing to share everything I have, but nobody understands my pain, not even the organizations who should have taken care of me. I feel alone and lonely. --> Ik hoef geen escargots, hoef geen fish 'n' chips Hoef geen paella, no, ik weet niet eens echt wat dat is (I don't need escargots, don't need fish 'n' chips. Don't need paella, no, I'm not even sure what it is) I'm not interested in luxury, not interested in traditions, not interested in exotic places. --> Zet de radio aan, ik hoor Stromae met "Papaoutai" (turn on the radio, I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai") I tune in and hear someone in a similiar situation (Stromae lost his father as well) echoing my thoughts ('Papaoutai' means 'Daddy, where are you?') --> Zal niet stoppen, tot ze zeggen: "Ja, ja, dat doet 'ie goed, ey" (Will not stop until they say: "yeah, yeah, he doing a great job, ey") I'm a insecure and will not stop until I got the confirmation that I'm on the right track. That I'm doing a good job. A tab on the shoulder will do. ------------------------------------ And there you have it. Europapa is a masterpiece....

As a vocal coach you are listnening perhaps in the first place a voice an a melody? The whole concept of this performance and the impact of it may be not easily recognised then, I presume. Also the many layers in this work. More than 14 million people feel it though: pain, fun, party, despair, unity, being together as human beings, lust for life, go on with your life after a lot of pain, hiding yourself, open up yourself, seeking help, seeking connection, no borders, all human beings together, Europa, music of the Netherlands, being together in difficult times, the freedom in Europe, dancing and joking the fear away, especially now...Therefore there is a lot of richness in this song/ rap/"gabber".Thát is what resonates now in the heart of so many viewers and listeners to this number of Joost Klein, I think.

Not just the song itself that’s such an emotional roller coaster but the reaction videos go from just a funny song to people who are completely overwhelmed and have to back their tears. The frase about walking to Vienna translates back to running away to go cry, Dutch mental health care is referenced. Besides that there are so many visual references to the 90’s. For people aged between 35 and 55 there is so much we recognize like certain camera angles even. From the Americas to Africa people picked up on things I hadn’t even noticed. This genre of music has been therapeutic for people who were hurting, to let out anger in a way it never hurt anyone else. The gabber culture is about love and connection, gabber means friend. I’m kind of bummed you missed it all

"It's [lyrics] so simplistic" I speak Dutch and I disagree. The text appears very simple, but it is written in such a way that the text is ambiguous. You can interpret the text in two ways: as an ode to Europe, where 'pa-pa' is a form of musical alliteration and the lyrical self explores cities of Europe, or as a spoken letter to his deceased father. From this interpretation, the lyrical self's European quest is not a physical journey but an emotional one during the process of grieving. 'It is a world without borders' then refers to personal boundaries. The ambiguity is also evident in the music video. The flames refer for instance to his devastated youth. "It is a song contest" That doesn't mean that the artist with the best voice necessarily wins. It's also about performance, originality, and infectiousness.

You missed the point of his whole artstyle. Read some comments here, some people are very good at explaining it. @HonestVocalCoach he has more songs where you go "wtf" and then when you get it.. You get it, Mostly upbeat songs with very painfull lyrics (except for Florida 2009 whats very direct) Its not simple its very clever but it might sound only fun at the first times listenting, Joost calls this the tip of the iceberg effect :) You saw the tip of the iceberg but didnt dig to see the whole thing. Maybe be curious and open, There is a reason why this makes so many people feel so much and are so into it and are showing passion here. Its different but different can also be good, It can make you learn, Open your mind. Let me be passionate for a moment : The lyrics are not simple , The song has been worked on for a whole year. Every line is choosen for a reason here, They are painful once you get them. But there is also humor in it at the same time. And to look at just a few of them : "I really lost everything execpt time" just think about that one.. You can look at it more ways than one right? He lost his home, He saw both his parents die with his eyes in the same year, He lost it all but yeah not the time like when we lose people we still stay behind with the time, The amount of time he has left without them hurts, It also can be seen as having the time to still make everything of it possible now he got so aware of it. "I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone im in Italy, but it still hurts" There is humor in this line, It sounds funny to listen to but if you read it not so much. Its a clever way of saying that where ever he goes to whatever country/ place in the world he still feels the grief be overwelming. "I don't want escargot, I don't want fish and chips Don't need paella, no, I don't even really know what that is" the same thing with food, Whatever food you eat it does not matter. because whatever you do it stays. "I Turn on the radio, I hear Stromae with Papaoutai" This is not random, Papaoutai means dad where are you? besides that Stromae makes upbeat songs with sad meanings too, so i think its fitting in the whole thing. So he cant flee his grief, When he turns on the radio it also is "dad where are you" The whole upbeat part is about fleeing from the grief but also about his dad message, Its double and has layers. You can look at it in different ways even at the same time. But then comes the outro and you can look up the lyrics yourself, ( look for the whole outro, Not the short version in the music video its a beautifull part of the whole) This part sounds more sad but is better mental wise, He feels his pain and does not run from it anymore, And moves in it by taking his his dad messages to heart "At the end of the day, we are all human, My father once told me: "It's a world without borders" “I miss you every day,” is what I secretly whisper See now, Dad? I listened to you" Again read the whole outro, Its worth it. So at the end the building burns where he was stuck in, In all kind of versions of him (stuck in his pain) what he said is inspired by the therapy forms of writing stuff down and then burning that to move to a new chapter. He said that he learned that you can live by your own pain too much at times, So This song is symbolic for moving into a new chapter in his grief. And It has more layers than only that one, Its also making fun, honoring his dads life lesson, Euro Papa is a word play of the dutch word for europe and dad together. Its a different way of expressing pain, You can party while doing it, Its about energry and sharing that. Its poetry but on a happy hardcore kinda song whats a dutch music style from the 90s. Seems like odd things to bring together , But damn its different and it works!

When Joost was announced as our artist, and after hearing tidbits of his general musc repertoire, I was hesitant. BUt when this song hit? OMG I loved it immediately. The lyrics ARE simple, but that's because it's the type of song you want to sing along to rather early on. It includes a portion of Dutch music subculture (Gabber house) - that's the dance break near the end ,but the ending is where it packs its depth and throws you off... because of that ending I love it even more since it's such a gorgeous, quiet ending to such a beat-filled song. There are a number of dancey quirky songs this year, but I truly think Joost's song steps that up a little by adding all the Europe related stuff in the lyric, as well as the Dutch Gabber house dancebreak, but also because the lyrics actually tell a good story. IMHO, that makes it quite a UNIQUE entry that stands out and ultimately, that's what you want at Eurovision. He's now 5th with the Bookies, FYI... so yeah.... there is a CHANCE that he might get pretty far up that scoreboard. I know this is your initial reaction but sometimes reactions change once you've heard all the songs. And no, it doesn't have to be your cup of tea, I'm sure it isn't for many. But when I review these songs, I try and keep an open mind and not knock the songs down after barely a minute in. Also, you've been watching a videoclip since there isn't a lot of performance vids out yet. That last bit is INTENTIONAL. Joost does have a video on youtube where there is a bit of performance - so you can hear his live vocals. Maybe look that one up. Since you're a vocal coach thát should be more up your alley. So yeah, there's more to come from Joost ;)

Besides all the great points that others have left here below, I feel like there is an extra meaning. The "happy hardcore" in combination with the deeper meaning and emotional ending symbolizes also the facade that people try to keep up when faced with trauma or depresive feelings. To the outside world they seem energetic like they enjoy life, but on the inside they never healed from the trauma that was laid upon them

Also the story behind this song is very emotional . To be honest when i first heard the song i didn't realize this because i didn't know the background of the singer . But i was sure that the message had to be sad because the entire atmosphere changed in the final seconds of the track you have only the singer talking directly to us and a sad piano in the background . This is very unique to me and i hope that the netherlands will keep sending more EDM songs .. Much love to the Netherlands from Greece . I am definitely voting for this song . Honestly, the lyrics of this song can be seen un-clever, silly, or simple only by those who are very simple and need easy emotions to get a message via the song. A powerful subtext is packed in a very accessible form that can work even without knowing Joost's challenging childhood, and that can address a broad audience. Next to living without parents, there is also a message of the world without borders, living with each other as we are - humans. This requires trust and the belief that living together and collaborating is better than fighting. So, yes, just because someone is a vocal coach doesn't mean they understand the world's complexities, songwriting, or even music in general. They evidently focus only on vocal performance - as this reaction does. Looking at her other comments, you will find it easy to guess what she does and doesn't like. That must be a stereotypical emotional statement via sad howling into the mic we all heard a thousand times. That simple and predictable she is. Also, as a European who has lived in several EU countries as well as in the Netherlands, I love the atmosphere of the song, which is the essence of being Dutch - not because there's gabber but because of that positive vibe, making people feel comfortable even in awkward situations. I'm very proud of Joost!

Joost is going to win the televote. I cry every time I watch it the whole way through. There are so many emotions and stopping the video ruins it I think.

It's about time we got happy hardcore at Eurovision! I REALLY hope this does well! This is one of those songs which is FAR better LIVE when the crowd joins in. The song you were thinking of was Gangnam Style by PSY but I think this is more like Scooter. It definitely isn't going to be to everyone's taste but the video has gone viral.

Joost's father died when he was 12 and his mother when he was 13. He always used to watch the Eurovision Song Contest with his parents and his father taught him that the world has no borders. Europapa' is about an orphan who travels throughout Europe (and surrounding areas) to find himself and tell his story. So the text definitely has a deeper meaning.

It's "funny" you saying there isn't much to the lyrics and he's singing about the pain he feels because his parents died when he was young. and wherever he is he feels alone. I have a feeling you just didn't want to like it from the start.... 14 million views on KZread can't be wrong.

Simplicity is often nice. You only need Europapa! It will be interesting to see what the Televote thinks.

This isn't a song, it's an act! It's packed with cultural references and dance / happy hardcore references from the nineties. The singer's personal motive is buried under all of that, which is kind of unlucky. But hey, that's him being him. He needs to shout at a wild audience.
