Pretty sure this is the performance Paul Simon commented on - "Really powerful performance on Conan the other day. First time I’d seen you do it live. Nice. Thanks." I'd say that's a pretty amazing compliment from the original writer, who is himself is an American legend.

It's unfortunate the Conan producers decided to ruin the genuine skill of the song with that touch of autotune they did for him. I'd rather an imperfect but genuine performance with one or two wrong notes than a perfect song with the soul stripped out. Thankfully, David has performed this song many times, and he does such a great job in venues that respect his desire to avoid autotune.

I'm kinda the opposite. Once I hear a really good live rendition of a song, I find it hard to go back to the studio version. A lot of the time it starts to sound a little too perfect, maybe a little too over-produced. I appreciate the differences and nuances added by live music, including the imperfections in the performance that would otherwise be cleaned up by a machine. People are fallible, they're not going to sing or play every single note perfectly 100% of the time. Plus, if there's any indicator of a band or musician's talent, it's as simple as being able to manage a good live performance of your own song, you know? Too many acts are propped up by great production masking the fact that they actually sound like shit.

David Draiman, the singer here, has what is called a "Concert Hall" or "Opera" voice. It just resonates off Concert hall style acoustics and makes his voice more epic. That is lost when recording in a booth style studio. So there's your difference.

If you isolate his voice and do a pitch analysis, you will see that both studio version and the Conan version were pitch corrected, making his singing sound totally unnatural in both cases. Kind of sad since if you observe his pitch on live performances he is more than able to pull the song off without assistance. If you are interested here is one video going into great detail showing how to see what is tuned and what is actual singing, he also explains pitch analysis in a fairly easy to grasp way. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJOcm498oNHFpbw.html

David has such a deep, rich tone and is so earnest about imparting the message of the song. It's very faint in most of the areas, meaning he's still doing the heavy lifting for most of the song, but yes. There is a faint amount of processing being done, which is not standard for the way David does his singing. I love how his voice goes from a sad almost vulnerable voice that builds as he’s sharing the story & then moves to frustration & anger. I don’t usually dissect songs, I’m not musician unless you count sometimes playing the triangle, but this performance is incredible.

I adore Disturbed's The Light. Wonderful music video, and it's a song that really speaks to me. I'd done everything "right" growing up and had this fabulous job straight out of college in a wonderful city. Started having all sorts of health issues that eventually forced me into disability. My last day worked wasn't even two years after finishing college.. My health problems aren't the kind that come with a probable shortened lifespan, but they robbed me of the quality of life I had set myself up for. Things I wanted from my life, outside of work, also became impossible - I got to skydive once in college tandem, and I loved it so much I wanted to learn to jump solo. Not an option now; it would cause too much pain. The loss of my health took a lot of my self identity and has been hard to accept. Nine years later and it still sucks. I'm in a better headspace than I was back then, but I still have bad days where I get really down on myself for something completely out of my control. The Light is a very uplifting song for me on the bad days. It's very different from what is canonical to Disturbed, softer than something like Stupefied or The Sickness or Ten Thousand Fists.

The best version was the duet with Myles Kennedy, it presented the song as it was intended to be sung and really added a layer that David solo can't replicate.

I love the fact that the video is transparent.. For people like me who already watched the original vid.. we can see it for what it is but it can also bring those who never did to actually go and watch it for themselves for a full experience. First time I see this done that way, and either or not it was meant to be this way, I think it's a brilliant idea. You sir, get a like and a sub for your authenticity.

I love the contrasts between Simon & Garfunkel's original and the covers done by Disturbed and Pentatonix. Three very different approaches that allow them to use the same words to tell the story in their own way.

david draiman...what a guy. hes got a lot of experience with opera singing, which is why his vocal range is amazing. he did this song justice and gave it SO much emotion. in terms of what you should hear next, i would recommend lisening to "ten thousand fists" or "rise" if you want to get a feeling of how good his vocal range is.

Great reaction! You should react to Disturbed's "Hold On To Memories" . David wrote this song after taking his young son to the movies to see Coco. Better have a box of tissues nearby, also their cover of Sting's "If Ever I Lose My Faith In You" updated videography and mind blowing!

I was blessed to see him perform this live in Holmdel NJ a couple of years ago. There is video of it on KZread. When I tell you the majority of the crowd was so quiet until the end you could hear a pin drop. It was an outdoor venue that has an ampitheater and OMG..the acoustics, his voice and the drums..it was like a spiritual experience. Felt it in my soul and yes..I cried. Check that one out if you would like as well. 😁

I literally get choked up. Goosebumps. Ive heard this song dozens of times. Same reaction, every time. Its like hearing Pavarotti for the first time. I put Draiman in the same tier. Just so beautiful, powerful, & captivating.
