For me, that performance is so so great. And I'd choose that type of expression over technical perfection anyday of the week, that's what makes it interesting and beautiful.

Exactly!!!!!!
Always prefer a raw performance with technical mistakes over a flawless recital.
The emotion in this performance always gets me when he says "then who the hell was I?" every single time I get emotional, we've all felt that way and if you havent, trust me, you will one day. Powerful.

So glad I’m not the only one who tears up on that line. He hits those words so hard
Once you’ve heard this performance, no other version of this song matters or even exists

Birdy's one is awesome enough to be noticed and enjoyed.
Always loved this dude's incredible falsetto tone. Right up there with Maxwell's.
This is why songwriters are the best. They sing through their soul. Which is why vocal couches are so mesmerized. A good voice doesn’t hit the way a man or woman with soul hits.
For me, this version is my favorite by a long way. It’s so raw and it just feels authentic. This version gives me far more than any other, even though there are some amazing covers.
I can't watch this version of Skinny Love without crying. It's so easy to feel what he is feeling when he sings. To me this recording is perfection, it's raw and painful but also cathartic.
Probably the defintive version of this song caught on camera. So much raw emotion put into song. Miles ahead of the Birdy version. PS: I really like how you do these reaction videos on singers that people wouldn't immediately put on top of their best singers lists. And how you are able to explain that what they do is actually quite difficult and takes a lot of skill. Singers like Neil Young, Justin Vernon, Bob Dylan, David Bowie have a unique sound that makes them one of a kind.
You should watch his cover “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, it’s incredible
I don't quite recall how I stumbled on to Beth's channel but I must say her commentary and exposition is always enthralling and her pure unadulterated joy at a good song is just beautiful!
Thank you for reacting to Bon Iver, that was wonderful! :)

Why do i fall in love with every redhead?
I really like how you talk about the fact that Justin Vernon's voice isn't always 100% pretty and technically perfect, but that it takes a certain amount of confidence to get it out how you want it to sound despite not being that way. His greatest strength is his songwriting ability, but his voice also has this really intoxicating magic, and he really understands how to use it.
I think we should just simply appreciate this masterpiece and his voice for the creation it is 🙏❤️
This is one of those like John Moreland's 'You Don't Care For Me Enough to Cry'. It ain't about technical perfection. It's about communicating the emotion.
I'd highly recommend you check out Bon Iver's live performance of 'Calgary' at the Sydney Opera House, it's so incredible! His range always blows me away.
Yes! Great song and a soulful performance.
THE PRECIOUS BETH ROARS !!! ❤️❤️❤️
Justin Vernon's vocals are beyond technique.

Great video Beth! I would love to see you reacting to Ben Howard's "End of the Affair" performance on Jools Holland as well! It is as beautiful and gripping as this one by Bon Iver.

I second this. As massive ben howard fan you could literally react to any of his songs and I'd be happy, but the ending of end of the affair on jools is breath taking
I’ve always liked the version by Birdy, it was the version I heard first, for a long time I thought it was the original, after I heard it from Justin Vernon I instantly loved it more, I love the aggression he brings to it, but also a lot of calmness as well, it’s great to hear him sing like this, he sings in such high notes, but in real life he has a very deep voice naturally.
so proud to say he's from my home state of wisconsin. this man had such a strong infliunce on my adolescence. wondeful video.
The mans music and voice is incredible.
Yep, these lyrics are bloody. Justin sings it bloody, beaten and bruised. Life thrown off-balance, dazed... I imagine walking from a disaster must feel like this. But to literally sever a relationship, with actual cutlery involved... Justin, you scary!. Pain makes for great art though, this whole record is amazing. Thanks Beth! Take care.
Birdie beat all the heart right out of this song, left the carcass to drain its blood... then put it into a cutely scented bodybag.

I never liked the Birdie, like it’s a good version technically speaking, but I think the little imperfections help the song. It sounds like a dude who grabbed his guitar and started pouring his heart out.

Great reaction ! And thank you for picking Bon Iver, I know someone did a cover that became more famous than the original, but he's so much more interesting to analyse and listen to. Exactly because of what you said, "he's not about souding pretty". It's about emotions, they're not always meant to be pretty. For me the combo clear voice/piano removed everything that was raw from that song and made it special.
JV the greatest vocalist/singwriter of the last 2 decades. What a boy.
This version is a masterpiece!
Radu Marian would be a great one for you to analyse btw, Beth. Great vid as always.
I'm dying for Beth reacting to Sleep Token Bloodsport from the room below oh gosh !!!
Thank you for your "WROOOO"
Beth, please react to City and Color's "Sleeping Sickness" : two amazing artists and voices (Dallas Green and Gord Downie), beautiful song
can we pretty pls have an updated little mix reaction!
Beth es hermosa 😍
Bon Iver is amazing. His falsetto has so much raw emotion in it. Birdy's cover of this just breaks my heart though.
I will never hear this song without thinking of Matt from Ramsey voice studio singing it in his examples on youtube haha
I feel like he's expressing a time where things had to go but he didn't want them to! The paradox sucks me in; It just makes me cry in empathy but I am going through a break up so.. ❤💔❤
Trying to get closer to his incredibly distinct falsetto tone, watching a tonne of tutorials, but keep crying mid-watch from how emotional these performances are lol
An excellent way to further dissect Justin's singing would be looking at his work on Taylor Swift's "Exile." The best version of that song is from the Long Pond session. And then check out his version of "I Can't Make You Love Me."
Beth can you please do a video on penny and sparrow. I would love to see your reaction!
You know, I'd love to see you react and analyze a song by Danny Elfman or his band Oingo Boingo. Like, either "Jack's Lament" from The Nightmare Before Christmas or "Stay" by Oingo Boingo. He's very agile and emotive, so idk which Boingo song would be the best showcase of his voice. Anybody else got some suggestions?
I'd love to see you react and analyze a live performance from the late great Selena Quintanilla. My Top 3 Suggestions are: "Disco Medley", "Como La Flor", and "No Me Queda Mas"
Beth, plz, do a cover of Will you still love me by Amy Winehouse, acoustic version. I think yhat it will be perfect on your voice
Please react to "Ana Carolina e Seu Jorge: É isso aí"
Big JV fan!
We don’t say the Birdy version in this house.
Is he using the same techniques as a countertenor?
Hey Bethany. Could you maybe react to the amazing and gorgeous Sutton Foster singing "Astonishing" fron Little Women, please. 😁😁 Sutton is my absolute favourite.
Hello Beth, you are my favorite Vocal Couch and I love to see your reactions and above all to hear your opinion about the new talented artists, I highly recommend for a reaction a singer named “FELIX IRWAN” who is of Filipino origin and transmits a lot in his interpretations, I am sure you will love it; Could you start with your Cover “When We Were Young” by Adele, kind regards from Mexico.
Would love to see a Reaction for Josh Kiszka, lead singer of Greta Van Fleets Heat Above. 🤘🏻

Hello!!! Please could you react to T.Rex or The Sweet. 🥰thanks
This is one of my all time Bon Iver favourites. Thank you for the great video and reaction comments! Have you seen the version he did about 7 years ago on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert? It really stands out. Here's the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/lnaFuZd8Zq7Xeps.html

it's his story and his song, I'm sure he doesn't have any fear telling it.
Please react to Christina Perri Jar of Hearts (10th anniversary acoustic) Thank you.
who is birdie and how can anyone out do the man himself?
I know nothing of music, and I understand very little of the terminology Beth uses. But, her explanation of how these amazing singers do what they do encourages me to take up singing and music in general, because she makes me feel like "oh, some of this is training, it's not just how they were born, maybe I could train well enough to do this or that"
React to Diana Navarro el perdon
Sometimes emotions aren't pretty when viewed from the outside...
There's a reason that I prefer the Bon Iver version over the Birdy. I absolutely respect Birdy as a musician, and her talent. I'm not trying to diminish that in any way. But when Justin Vernon sings this song, there's a weight and rawness to it that only comes from personal experience. You can tell when he sings it, it takes him to a very specific moment in his life that he draws upon to make the song what it is. Birdy(and nobody else on the planet) can ever sing this song the way he does because they did not live the life he lived.
I love his version so much more than birdie
Great song. Richard Stirton’s version of this is my favourite. Something about his vocal range and the range he sits in for his version just really works for my ears. 😊
so much more art birdy version is just a calculated ear massage
"so different than the Birdy version" ya she stripped it of all its emotion and made it another pop ballad
She paused the best part!!! And didn’t reacted to that magic moment…

She would’ve said it sounded bad anyway
When I watched this on Jools Holland years ago, I said to my girlfriend that if she ever had the opportunity to leave me for Justin Vernon and didn't take it then she wasn't a real woman. We are now married, I've just seen this and repeated what I said to her.
LORNA SHORE - TO THE HELLFIRE
there all patrion vote winner
There’s a certain amount of nerding out about music that can kinda kill a vibe 🤷🏽♂️
Maybe next Jimi Hendrix?
If only you hadn’t heard the birdy version or had been able to relate to the emotion. Seems like outside your scope
Love the Birdie cover but I love this rough live version too, I don't mind the sometimes awkward "distortion" in his voice, I think it's a heartfelt brilliant performance

The Bon Iver version has that raw emotion to it, the Birdie version is great but it doesn't have the experience and emotion of the original.
I just think you’ve got to have your heart broken to really get this performance, probably several to times over in a flailing, long term relationship. 100% connection here. Chris Stapleton and Fire away another massive cry fest. I’ll be ok by the way. Love your analysis. X
You are my favorite vocal reactor, but holy Lord, you don’t feel the performance. At all. It honestly makes me sad. Which is weird. It shouldn’t, but man he put so much into it, but it seems superfluous. His falsetto is weak as shit, but when he goes into his full voice it is heart wrenching to me. Maybe I’m just wrong. Edit: his falsetto voice IS Mickey Mouse-ish. I hated it for so long. And many of my friends do as well. I get it.
Hey, loved the video and your analysis, can you make a video about Azahriah? I mean analyse his voice and his songs like Fufuflex, MIND1(it means whatever), 4K Love, Lonely with HundredSins or his cover on "You broke me first".
This version > Birdy version x 100
She don't get it.
Over analyzing it. This is the difference from learning by school and actual soul ecperience.
Reminds me of why I hate the birdy version she ripped out all of the emotion all the points where Justin's voice distorts for the direct purpose of conveying the pain he feels. All sense of nuance was ripped out to make a "pretty" song
I've heard covers of this that are technically better but don't even come close to hitting in the same way.
This version makes me listen and feel something The birdie version is nice background music - meh
He definitely has better performances of this.

This is the best. Not technically, but emotionally.
Ooh....Bon Iver. I have listened more to the Birdy version than theirs. Even though they are the original writers.
Beth Roars, the walking click bait, i'm weak but yes i'm in love......and yes his love is skinny, total soyboi
Beth: "There's someone who..does not mind about it being...pretty" Allow me to introduce you to emo singing! In the world of emo, we refer to this technique as "full dashboard". A reference to the last 60 seconds or so of the song "This Bitter Pill" by the band Dashboard Confessional. I'd certainly get a kick out of a Beth Roars video on that song, haha!

It’s the best part for everyone else lol
Or. Here me out. He's just singing... No analysis needed. It's a human person singing, no tricks trying to be pulled. He wasn't practicing theory before belting this out. It isn't bravery that makes you scream lyrics out like that. It's feeling, you actually MEAN what you're singing.
