    From what I understand Idina has asthma attacks at times. Once was just before she preformed Defining Gravity at the Tony Awards. It happened several times while doing the show on Broadway. It could be a factor in her singing. I give her a lot of credit though, I can’t imagine it’s easy to sing after an attack and doing a song like this one... it’s dedication to the career you’ve chosen.

    The thing about Idina is her passion. I know that as a singing teacher you were analyzing the technical performance. But for me, as a fan of musicals, Idina just gives me the goosebumps for the way she performs each song on this musical. It’s technically flawed, but emotionally perfect (for me, anyway). You can see her telling the story with her whole body, her expressions, her eyes. And I have never seen anything like this in the other actresses that played Elphaba, even though many could sing more effortlessly. Idina is and forever will be my one and only Elphaba 💚

    The thing is technique like this is not sustainable for 8 shows a week. I can’t believe she wasn’t reigned in. She continued to scream her way through Elphaba. Shoshana Bean was her standby, and became the 2nd Broadway Elphie. She is beyond fabulous in technique and sound.

    I feel like Idina tends to favor character over technique. I guess I just always assumed her pitchiness in Wicked was an homage to Margaret Hamilton. Your analysis does make me want to revisit some of her other roles to see if this is just Wicked.

    I think it’s important to remember with theater singing that some vocal decisions can be made for character. I think a lot of what Idina does with her voice, he mouth shape, her placement, etc. is designed to go specifically with the character of the wicked witch of the west, her Elsa songs and Elphaba songs sound totally different to me in terms of the way she sings them.

  • @danue
    @danue3 жыл бұрын

    You just took one of her worse renditions of the song. Idina is not the most technical support Elphaba, but her tone and acting gave so many LIFE to the character. If you about to watch her singing Wicked, you have to look at this point. Once again, her worst performance of the song. Pleas react to DEFYING GRAVITY PROSHOT with her and Kristen. This it was an unfair reaction.

    I mean she clearly states at the start of video already that she dislikes her singing so it makes sense she chooses a video to support her feelings. And to add to it "Let me know your favorite (best) version of this song and let's compare it to this Idina's bad performance". And before someone tries to take my scalp - I am not huge Idina fan but still this is just ridiculous video from a "pro" :D

    I'd have to say a big fucking "nope" on that one. The original Wicked production was, as far as I've gathered, a bit of a gamble which just struck gold in the end. Idina Menzel is an OK singer, but far from great. She's always nasal and has a tendency to go flat. There's so many better singers, just look at Willemijn, for example.

    Right ? There's literally so many videos and audios of her singing this song so PERFECTLY and yet people just happen to react to and focus on the ones where she doesn't happen to perform her best. Literally every single Elphaba has had a "bad" or " less than perfect" performance and they don't get hated on as much as Idina does. Probably because there arent as many videos of them with a "bad performance" as Idina. She's actually my favorite Elphaba not bc she was the original, but because i think she showed that human and vulnerable side of Elphaba, even with the imperfections. Also the fact that I've never heard her change the iconic battle cry (I'm not a fan of making too many changes to the score). I will admit all the other ladies sing beautifully as well and they sound amazing, but changing the final cry is a big disappointment for me. (This is just my opinion, no hate intended 😊)

    She IS Wicked......I know you are a teacher....but she combines the character w singing....which is why nobody gives a shit when its not perfect all the time...would you believe many vocal coaches said Steve Perry didn't sing properly--gtfoh....you know the songs from Wicked because of her....plain and simple. NOBODY makes you feel those songs and takes you on Elphaba's journey better. It doesn't matter who plays Elphaba after her, or how good their voice maybe, it's just NOT Idina. And of course it's characterization...she is Elphaba singing....not Idina. Did she sing like this in rent? Umm, no. The character required something different....big difference from singing a sing from Wicked and singing a song IN Wicked.... best of luck w your channel.

    Okay I know that A LOT of these comments are a year older and its like "Yeah we understand Audrey or whatever" but like when Idina had to sing "Let it Go" a million times before doing it on TV and it sounds dragged down or not at its best, its understandable. Broadway or even singers doing it live sound tired, this is her song shes just tired and not giving it her BEST. Shes amazing and not lacking but shes at this time tired

    I think the song is just beyond her natural range. In other productions, they take it down a half step or two. Not sure why they couldn’t for Idina. An actor shouldn’t have to strain to hit these notes, imho. You asked for other actors who did it nicely: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kXipx6ltpaXYacY.html

    This wasn't her best performance of doing this song. I think if you are going to compare her to other artists you should watch her performance of this song at the 2004 Tony Awards show: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gWmKm62woNOzltY.html , this is the year she won a Tony for her performance as Elphaba in Wicked. I also think you should react to her and Kristen Chenoweth singing "For Good" in 2016: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ho5k0rqOkpjQhrg.html .

    You really should react to her 31/10/2006 performance in London. I know it's a bootleg recording and you're probably done reacting Wicked, but that one was her best performance ever, she was improving on the technique (notably, she understood that if she made her "dooooown" actually go down (lower), it would sound bad, so she started making it go higher and it fixed), and overall it's a much better performance than any of her, that's my go-to performance when I wanna listen to Defying Gravity, I would say it's even better than the OST version kzread.info/dash/bejne/emidzM2rkpeyiso.html

    I would definitely say I have 100% heard her sing this song a lot more healthy and a lot more clean. The difference between her and any other performer I’ve ever heard sing this song on Broadway is her acting. I feel like a lot of people say that, but I want to be another person that just reiterates it, because it’s so true. I’ve heard people that are so technically correct with this song and sing it perfectly and they knock it out of the park, but they’re acting and their emotions just isn’t there like her’s is. I’ve heard people sing the most perfect, beautiful notes and I feel nothing, because I feel like they feel nothing. One of the reasons why Idina and Kristen made the perfect Elphaba and Galinda is because one of them is just about perfect and the other one isn’t. Idina is a little loose around the edges and Kristen is this perfect package, which represents those characters so well. I also agree with a lot of people that she has had a string of bad performances due to multitude of reasons. I know that this video is so old lol, so there is a big chance you won’t read this comment, but I hope you do, because I would *love* to hear you react to what I believe is in Idina’s best live performance she has ever done. Nobody’s Side from the live performance of Chess. She really shows off when she can do in that performance. Dear Lord this was a BOOK, I’m sorry haha, I’m just super passionate about this topic, haha.

    Idina's philosophy in performing is as long as I hit around 50% of the notes that's fine. That's a horrible way for a professional to think. It takes a LOT of work to make her sound good on soundtracks. She would be great if she stopped going for belting roles. She may have been able to do it in Rent but not ever since without vocal aids. Not the best role model for any singer...Great role model in an acting aspect. Deserved her Tony fully! Straight plays would be a perfect fit for her.

    I don’t know why you’d pick a tv performance of all things. If you’re gonna critique her take on it-it being HER song to begin with, as she was the first to sing it- it’s only fair to look for the best performance you can find of her doing the song. I’m not even really a fan of Wicked; I’ve never seen the whole play. I’d still insist that judging ANYONE’S take on a classic like this, ESPECIALLY a performer with Idina’s legacy, deserves to be judged at her best.

    The best performances are all bootlegs from when she performed in Wicked. And she doesn’t react to bootlegs to avoid copyright. Plus, she doesn’t choose what videos she reacts to. It’s her community who recommends them.
