Vocal Coach Reacts (1st time) to Dirty Loops - 'Next To You'

In this video, I react for the first time to the swedish band Dirty Loops performing “Next to You”. I analyze their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate Jonah Nilsson's vocal techniques and tell you what I think made it so great. This is an amazing tune and I am so glad I finally reacted to it!

Hello, gorgeous! I'm Lolli, your Fairy Voice Mother. I am a voice teacher & vocal anatomy nerd specialising in contemporary techniques. I have a degree in vocal performance, and I am studying for a masters degree in voice pedagogy. I sing all the time in styles such as pop, jazz, rock, metal, soul, Hindustani, Carnatic and I am constantly learning and practicing new vocal skills. I just bloody love singing. It's my favourite thing in the whole world, and because I love you, I want you to sing too. I believe everyone can sing, and my mission with this channel is to break down techniques that are so often portrayed as something to be exclusively accessed by people with a special talent. Well. Special talents can be learnt, and I am here to teach them to you.
For voice lessons, workshops and video submissions please check out my website www.thefairyvoicemother.com
I'm so excited to be a part of your singing journey, It's one that truly never ends.
Love you forever,
The Fairy Voice Mother x

Jonah is actually a pianist first, although he did a lot of choir singing growing up. But he really is every bit the monster on his instrument that the other two are. He did all the singing on this track though - Aron miming background vocals in the video is just for visuals.

Hey fairy godmother, this was one hell of a reaction! Not only did I love the fun things popping up all over your screen, in the way of flying Henrik kicks (the little ray of sunshine ;), fierce guys waiting for you to drop that a… word, etc. 🤣, but also how you let those three guys just slay you (2:34 😂). That’s what they do best, those three guys- slay people 🧨⚔️💥 I also appreciated your analysis of Jonah’s vocals -and yes, he does ALL of the vocal layers in this one, despite appearances. There is a whole story of how this came about, and others can tell it better than me… Here in this vid they’re just trolling us 😉 Yes, those vocals sound soo different at different times, -Jonah made sure they did just that :) Aron, the drummer, is vital in co-writing the tunes as well as often the basslines, -those amazing basslines 🧡 Not sure tho how much the basslines are Henrik’s writing in this piece. That funk and that groove are too good, like musical hot chocolate and musical dark chocolate -totally addictive, and as you’ve said, in the end it’s all constant layers of euphoria. The space and the contrasts they create in their pieces add so much, I feel. The secret sauce in their writing. And as you’ve also said, they hit you with something new every four bars. All three of them. And yeah, it’s only the three of them. My biggest wish would be to see another reaction to Dirty Loops from you. Educational, hilarious and full of genuine blown-awayness. Thanks 🙏

I never even paid serious attention to bass before I got hooked on DL - and became a huge fan of Henrik's. FYI: Jonah on the keys is doing all the vocals. His parents are choirmasters in Stockholm (?) and he has had classical music training. Aaron on drums arranged almost all the bass according to Henrik the bass player. All three attended the same music school. Henrik said in an interview his bass sound patches are managed by whatever it is they're using in their live performances to provide the click track, switch sound patches and trigger Jonahs prerecorded backing vocals. My guess is they're using a DAW (a macbook pro) which is more functional than a keyboard sequencer.

:D Fun fact: When the BIG CHOIR kicks in for the final two sections, Jonah created different voices and characters for each imagined singer in that choir and performed them that way. It really does sound like a proper choir since he avoids the "uniform" sound that normally comes from a singer doing all his own backing vocals. (Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, sometimes that is of course just what the arrangement needs.) Great stuff.

Not as much singing to react to there, but yo get the more of the bass player skills in it! He plays as if having four hands, you could say, and it would be partly true! At the very least, it will likely blow your mind. Just so you don't miss out unknowingly! You could of course react to other Dirty Loops songs as well, maybe Rock you. Great composition, and you get to (unfortunately, according to Aron or Henrik, can't remember) hear all three singing in it. Good job!!! Made my day!

If Coldplay and Nsync merged and hooked up with The Funk Brothers (Motowns band) this would be the result. Much Love❤❤❤

Love that you react to this! Your joy at something so well executed is contageous! They are the pride and joy of Sweden! 💙💛 Yes, a little Michael, a little Stevie! And of course it´s Toto and Queen revisited! Jonah (keyboardist) does all the choirs! They started off together young at the same music academy in Stockholm. ❤

Your reaction to Dirty Loops has to be THE most animated and enjoyable I have seen so far ( and I have watched dozens). The way you instantly and in real time convey that you get it, your insight and musical knowledge bring it all to the forefront. Kudos to your reaction and let's see you go all out into the rabbit hole of the 'Loopified'. The Cory Wong collabs will bring you even more joy !

Dirty Loops have the distinct ability to create huge reaction from critiques who understand musician’s music. You have it girl. You understand and know exactly what you are listening to.
