I think we have to consider that Chris travelled to Korea. He didn't need to, as Jhope says they could have done it remotely. We know how much BTS love Coldplay. Also you can see Chris trying to learn Korean and including the different members . Neither of them needed the collab but seems more like a wanted collab and research was done into the messages behind what the groups believe in.

Totally agree..the fact that Chris travelled all the way to Korea says a lot but what impress me the most is he actually did his research about BTS and got to know their music, style and even added a dance break for "My Universe" Coldplay don't need to collab with anyone they are already well known, same goes for BTS they don't need to collab with anyone but they did it because they wanted to.

I get why you'd think that way, but it is somewhat sad that everyone near BTS is doubted for their ingenuity because we know how much influence they have. But honestly, Coldplay are very good people. Not even for a moment did I doubt him. He went all the way to South Korea just to record and direct properly and communicate with the boys. I believe, out of all the collaborations ever, this was THE most genuine one.

righttt, i mean everything is alr shown in the video there??? and like that’s two of the most genuine groups I’ve known coming together so why even ask that in the first place, coldplay wouldn’t be in this game for such a long time for no reason and bts isn’t the biggest k act and musical group for no reason. Idk if he even listened to them speaking in the documentary, both chris martin and bts spoke so highly of each other and showed mutual respect

Yeah, this and Boy with luv with Halsey because she went to Korea to be in the music video as well. Chris also went during the pandemic and had to be in a hotel for like 2 weeks I belive before meeting them for 2 days only and then go back home and if it wasn't genuin why would he do that as they said it could just be them recording on opposite sides of the world and never meet but he went there and you can also see how genuin Chris is with them, it's not for views he's doing this it's because he wanted to. And someone also said that remember that this isn't a Coldplay ft BTS or BTS ft Coldplay its Coldplay AND BTS it's their song both party owns the song but it's on Coldplays album yes but BTS will for sure sing this in a concert Im positive about that!

Let's face it, neither of them actually NEEDED this Collab. They've both made it big. So the fact they went to so much trouble to make the Collab tells me they WANTED it genuinely. Look at what Jimin said, Coldplay going all the way to Korea for them gave them a breath of fresh air. Korea has not been like the US during the pandemic, restrictions have been very strict there in comparison (and still are). The boys didn't get out or see people for so long, it must have meant so much to them. And this was back in April during even stricter restrictions. Coldplay will have had to pay thousands on arrival to Korea to isolate for 2 weeks before they even got to see BTS. Not just Chris Martin but the band and his whole team. If that's not a genuine want to do something like this then I don't know what is.

You're absolutely right! It was such a culture shock coming to Korea this fall straight from the US. For those who don't know, 2 week quarantine is pretty much mandatory, you can be max a group of 4 before 6pm, and only 2 people max. after 6pm. And the police really take their job seriously in enforcing covid policies. Its INCREDIBLY different.

Yeah once you add traveling during the pandemic (I believe that SK also had a 14 day quarantine) when as Hobi said it could all have been done remotely, I don't think groups who are BOTH at the scale they are taking chances like that for a publicity stunt. Now not to say they are both ignorant to the different fans who will have eyes on the groups but Coldplay and BTS don't need to garner more fans or interest. If this was a collab of HUGE GROUP and tiny group I would probably lean a little more into the big group is helping but this pairing needs no more fans, no more interest, it's not about money cause they both are HUGELY successful and Coldplay is notoriously picky when it comes to their music. This was a strange pairing that came about I would guess when they asked to sing Fix You and Chris did some research on who are these guys.

In the beginning Chris went with the story that "they" asked if Coldplay had a song for them. BTS' company is known to globally ask around for songs they could work with. The story went from just a song to a collab. It's more streamlined now, but if one would go with all interviews and comments, the videos are still out there. This is YT after all.

I would check Chris’s interview about my universe. Authenticity is oozing I paved mr Martin to do whatever he feels to do on his own term. It was said that fix you is a cover that permission is not easily granted by Coldplay. Army will tell you (words of Chris) BTS asks for a demo but they end up writing together the whole song And because they understand each other the rap verse were already ready when Chris mentioned them. To make it short, V asks for it. His dream He got the alien and Coldplay The interview only leaves me with the good impression that fandoms deserves their artists to be on stage And I love we got to see Yoongi at work J-Hope oh yes We keep saying that BTS is professional and efficient It’s a talented hard working team I’m glad Chris went to them If you hear his interview You will know the hassle was real Regulation are no joke.

I was taken aback when he asked that question, of how authentic everything was. I mean traveling all the way to the other side of the world during the pandemic, going through all the trouble the pandemic poses, I mean it can't be more authentic than that. I am curious as to what gave him an idea to question the authenticity. Both band stand and believe in the same things like togetherness, they certainly don't need a publicity stunt like that they are already legendary. So coming together like that can't get anymore authentic.

Weird cynicism from Justin. This question you asked wasn't even in my vicinity of thoughts when I first watched it. On the contrary, out of all the collaborations BTS has ever done, this was THE most genuine one! BTS members have mentioned that , even before their debut, Coldplay was their first ever concert they attended in person. Also, mind you this was just a 15 minute interaction that was shown while they spent maybe over 2 days together. There is a language barrier yet to me both artists welcomed each other well and fed off well. Maybe you haven't watched enough of BTS material to know their inherent personality of being shy and awkward during their interactions with other artists.

My thoughts exactly. I honestly stopped watching as soon as he asked our opinion on the genuineness. Like, this documentary was so positive, so that idea was the furthest thing from my mind, it wasn't even a thought. Yes, I know everyone is entitled to their opinion or to question whatever they want.......but usually that kind of reaction or questioning has to be brought on by something, and this film makes it quite clear that it's genuine, it's real. Army are pretty protective, and can tend to doubt people's intentions when it comes to BTS, but I haven't come across any that have questioned this collab. Idk I was kinda thrown off by Justin's attitude, a little confused by it.

I think the awkwardness of the smiles just comes from the fact that 1) Chris is in a foreign place where he doesn’t speak the language. 2) They’re meeting for the first time ever 3) BTS might be feeling pressure since they all look up to Coldplay. But considering who they all are as people, and the similar messages they spread with their music, it’s without a doubt a collab motivated by artistry.

Of course they want to make good music together and for the single to do well, wouldn't any professional performer, but that doesn't necessarily make their friendliness towards each other insincere? This was a very genuine collaboration in my opinion. My reasons are below, in no particular order. FYI, this won't be short. 1. There are several documented instances of members of BTS citing Coldplay as a major influence and wanting to work with them. And this goes back several years. 2. BTS and Coldplay are both extremely popular worldwide artists with longstanding careers. For example, they are the #1 (BTS) and #5 (Coldplay) most followed groups on Spotify. While yes, it could, and probably will, expand both of their fan bases, neither one of them NEEDS this collaboration. They each have millions of fans, many of which, like myself, already like/love both groups. 3. So much extra effort was put into making the song that would not have been necessary to make it just as successful. As was mentioned previously, there was no need for Chris and his team to go to SK. It is quite common, especially during these current conditions, for collaborations to be done remotely, even when all parties live in the same country. Add to that, the quarantine requirements and only having 2 days together. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, Halsey is the only other artist that worked with BTS in SK (it was for the MV, not the song) and there was very little question of whether their collaboration was authentic. 4. The fact that they created an MV together at all. Very few other collaborators made MVs with them, which again, was made even more difficult during this pandemic. 5. The values and messages BTS and Coldplay promote are very similar so it makes sense they would have a genuine respect for each other and want to work together. BTS's has always been very clear, and Coldplay is known for being extremely picky about who they even let cover their songs much less work with. And let's not forget Chis gave both his permission and blessing of their Fix You cover. 6. Would HYBE see this as a great business opportunity? Of course they would, they are in the business of making money, as they should be. And BTS are not ignorant of this fact. However, they have shown by their past actions that money is not their main motivation. I really like your comment. I had only heard one or two Coldplay songs, so when the collaboration was announced I looked for a few things finding that Chris Martin has a reputation for being humble, simple and down to earth, who else is like that? BTS. In addition to seeking to give a positive message with their songs, which BTS also does. He also supports an international humanitarian campaign that seeks to spread love for himself and for others (when he went to Korea he gave the boys buttons from that campaign), which coincides with BTS's Love My Self campaign. With all this, I really wanted to listen to his music, and so far I have liked it.

I don't think you could ever question the genuineness of this collab if you actually pay attention to anything the boys or Chris are saying in the documentary or their reactions to each other. This was based on pure respect and love for music which is surprisingly a very rare thing in the industry so this was a joy to watch. Neither Coldplay or BTS need each other for anything. They're both artists who sell out stadiums worldwide in seconds. That's a true metric of success in my opinion. How many people are willing to go through the stress of waiting, queueing and fighting for tickets just to see you perform for a couple of hours because of how much joy you give them and both Coldplay and BTS have that.

I don't think I understand or if this question is needed in the first place. Every musician creates music with some mindset and then comes the strategies and efforts to make it happen. and there is no double meaning in the documentary. BTS asked Coldplay for a collab. Chris Martin waited until he had a perfect song he could actually do with BTS that could align with their and his ideology.

Moreso, after watching this documentary. Armys find this the most genuine collab there is. These are artists who are both legends. They are giving off positivity in their music. Both gained so much especially the fans with this collab. At this time in the middle of pandemic, where they can do it remotely, why the hassle of seeing each other for this. I don’t know if you are reading what Chris and BTS was saying. Your question just rubbed me off in an unpleasant way.

I think bts usually is always genuine in their side. The artist they collab with? Maybe not so much with their true intentions... Ex: I think this Coldplay collab was genuine from bts (I don’t doubt that, I never doubted that ) but also from Chris . I think this is the most genuine collab bts has done where both sides really mutually respect eachother Let’s take the Nicki collab. I think this was more a dream thing for bts as they are huge Nicki fans. They love hip hop and rap. I didn’t doubt they were thrilled. But I kind of doubt Nicki really knew bts music all that well. So in that sense I think it was more one sided. Let’s look at Megan. Megan SAID she was a fan and she liked them and Megan is a sweetheart for sure so I’ll take her word for it. But Megan does a lot of out the box things (like she collabed with maroon 5 I think) so yeah. But again idk if she knows bts music like that (we don’t know!!!) I think the one collab where bts didn’t seem like it was THAT genuine was chain smokers. I kind of doubt they were that big of fans of them and that was like 2017 when they were still on their American come up. So yeah that’s my 2 cents

At a certain point too, does it even matter if the collab is "genuine"? The music business is business after all. This is work, this is their career/job. Working with other artists is working with a coworker/colleague. It's not a requirement for coworkers to like each other or be besties in order to still do good work. I think Chris Martin/Coldplay do genuinely like BTS, but if it was just a business transaction, then in reality that's actually ok too. The only thing that's an actual problem is if, for example, Coldplay did this collab with BTS and then goes around the industry bad mouthing BTS and lying about his experience working with them or something ridiculous like that.

Give or take a couple years. Haven't heard much before Viva La Vida days (2008). By this point, we were in middle school. But even still, I've only ever heard how down to Earth and humble Chris Martin is. He believes in change and that music truly transcends borders. That there shouldn’t be any gatekeeping to music and the possitive possibilities it can bring. I can tell he's hyper aware of the influence Coldplay and other artists like BTS have. No wonder they're so fond of...and nervous to be around...each other. Not sure of any other international collaborations Chris has done. However, he did a song with a Nigerian artist named Burna Boy called Monsters You Made. It's beautiful. Impactful artists helping impactful artists.

@whatacuteTae Why does it matter what motivated the collaboration? Business is business - even in the music industry. Why demonize Coldplay for doing a collaboration w/ BTS when they've done other collaborations w/ artists who were big names at the time & also with some of the group's biggest influences when they were young? Also, it seems like a decent number of those collaborations they've done have been through their humanitarian efforts. I think Coldplay had a bit of the best of both worlds when they collabed w/ BTS - the groups both have a similar message they support, they like at least some of each other's music, & they are both big names (regardless of recent or historic album sales, so please don't bring up clout on either / both sides) in their industry. What I found admirable & authentic about the collaboration was the fact that the music expressed both groups' music styles & meshed so well. I could hear the Coldplay influences & I could hear the BTS influences as well. To see the mutual respect they each had for each other & having fun while working on this song for 2 days was a joy. Business relationships are not always so easy - especially when there is a language barrier. Appreciate it for what we have been given - a piece of musical history that reflects both artists equally.

And in Coldplay's album release Chris said he heard that Jin had asked them for a song, and so he thought about it, decided to, and started to write one for them, and someone on their side, maybe a producer decided they should record it together instead. You can defend BTS all you want, but you are missing big pieces of information that are publicly known. You can't say BTS didn't want to work with Coldplay when two members have asked three times - that we know of. Let them enjoy working with someone they're fans of. Coldplay can grow and learn and become fans of BTS if they weren't already.

why would it not be genuine? strategic for what? these are the two biggest groups in the world at this moment in time with two dedicated followings of listeners who seriously adore their discographies. neither of them need clout from the other, i promise you that. bts wanted to make a song with coldplay and approached them first - they've been speaking about it for years because they adore coldplay and their music - and now it finally became a reality. chris didn't know much about bts at first so that's why he said he didn't see it coming but he later literally said their ideologies and idea of music match up, and that bts has a diverse range of melodies and genres, so it all worked out perfectly. and why wouldn't it? also, if chris wasn't genuinely feeling this project and did it for business (if that's what you were aiming for) - he didn't have to fly all the way to korea and endure their mandatory self-quarantine just for two days of recording - he would have sent his vocals and melody via email and be done with it. i don't like your shady questioning of their collaboration.. what were you trying to say there?

Chris has been nothing but kind and respectful towards them, he flew all the way to Korea during massive restrictions when it could've easily been done remotely, the boys seem genuinely happy around him. They even made sure to meet up with Coldplay *again* when they recently went to New York despite their busy schedule. They usually don't meet up with fake celebrities more than once, so them wanting to meet Coldplay again and spend time with them means they genuinely like them. Plus BTS brought hanbok (traditional Korean outfits) as gifts for Coldplay, that alone speaks volumes to how much they like them, and Coldplay have worn them multiple times since. Also BTS recently did a virtual interview with Chris Martin where you can again see the mutual respect, and they specifically wanted to be interviewed by him! I don't know why you would question BTS' input into this either, they have been massive fans of Coldplay for years. They mentioned their songs as early as 2014, they were listening to Coldplay's songs and talking about how good they were in Bon Voyage 2016, some of the members went to a Coldplay concert in 2017, they have mentioned them countless times as a dream collab. They have been genuine fans for a long time. BTS have been subjected to so many fake celebrities, so much prejudice and rudeness, they have incredible bullshit detectors at this point. As fans we know by their reactions how comfortable they are, and they all seemed very happy during this collab. Their friendship with Chris seems very respectful and genuine, I haven't seen any reason to doubt that?

Please be more humble and more kind and just be happy and enjoy music. BTS and COLDPLAY make such great music with such great messages and I am more than happy about this colab. Enjoy the music and stop overthinking things! Love & respect! 😊🤗

I think it's the best collaboration. They have this mutual respect for eachother. They are giants in their own way. So if Chris took the trouble to travel all the way there to do it this way says it all. They have the same vibes, same intentions & you could feel the chemistry between the two. It's history right there. Love them together.

Yeah, everything in collaboration is a strategy but it doesn’t mean theres no authenticity on it. This collaboration (for me) is authentic and with the feeling of connection and excitement it wasn’t forced. BTS admired Coldplay, its a great thing they got to work with them and that just made me so happy. They’re grateful of the experience and appreciative of the opportunity. Coldplay’s a great band and as well their messaging synonymous of BTS. It maybe a strategy (business wise) but still both groups are having fun and they both got the advantages. They have created an anthem, The Universe which a lot of people feel so hopeful about the song. My 90 yr old grandma is feeling the song and was jamming listening to the song not knowing who the artists were. That alone is so meaningful, both groups sent their message across so well, thats the most important. 💜

I have never doubted about this collab' authenticity and never seen any person questioning other than you, I find your question very weird. All the people who saw this collab (even non-fans) talked about how genuine this collab is, they are the most sincere artists I have ever seen. I think this is the most genuine collab they've ever done, I don't get why you questioned it. I'm actually really shocked by your question. I haven't seen any bad thing about coldplay and haven't seen a single fan (from both sides) who questioned the authenticity of this collab. Neither of these groups need this collab cause both are rich and globally famous. Chris is the sweetest, you can definitely see his sincerity just by looking the way he sits on the floor of the studio, trying to learn korean, even the way he smiles. I'm not even talking about him going to korea (although it's very hard to get there in this pandemic) they were only allowed for two days. As Jhope said it could've done remotely but they wanted to make it more "together" like the song' message. I don't know why you're being negative about this collab, we as fans saw nothing negative about it, both groups are respectful to each other. At one point I am questioning how genuine are your reactions to BTS cause it looks like you don't even know them

This is the most genuine collaboration BTS have ever had. Chris flew to Korea, quarantined, researched BTS discography and each members' individual tones, included Korean lyrics, a rap section and dance break just for BTS even though they asked for the collaboration in the first place. He could easily have just given BTS a ft section and called it a day like everyone else. But he allowed them to be themselves on the song and treated them with so much kindness and respect. He made sure meeting their childhood hero was a dream come true for our boys.

They are also working very closely on a large project under huge time constraints. I would imagine they are very nervous. It would be odd if they weren't.

They have said on multipule occasions that they have all been huge fans of Coldplay and I don't think they would fake their happiness for the sake of promoting a new song. As for Coldplay they are one of the biggest bands and have been around a long time. They don't need this collaboration to promote their band as their carer is already long standing and cemented to as one of the greatest. Coldplay didn't need to travel all they way to Korea as jhope says it could have done remotely. I think chris Martian is very genuine and holds a lot of admiration and respect for the boys and their music. BTS does so many different types of collabs but Halsey, lauv, Max, and coldplay, and a few of the others are really one of the few that actually treat them as they are...like artists. He gave them so much respect. He studied their dancing, their music, he obviously studied their voices because he was able to pick who he thought went best with each chorus and he had them help write his lyrics and listened to them and their suggestions and continually praised their ability and it really just warmed my soul. And he even went to SK. He legit flew all the way over there. He went through 2 weeks of mandatory and isolated quarantine. Like, it is one person per room, you are stuck alone by yourself for that time, took the covid testing you have to do it twice fyi, and then proceeded to abide by their covid rules without complaint. He was only there for 2 days but he went through all of that just to record for 2 days. It is amazing.

Honestly, I could write thousands of words on how and why this is authentic. But I think the easiest way to tell, aside from the obvious fact that Chris went to Korea and went through all of their intense restrictions bc of Covid, is that they were laughing and smiling in the studio. Genuinely laughing and smiling and just having fun overall. It's a beautiful thing to see, especially after everything that both individual artists have gone through, and the amount they obviously respect and admire each other. And additionally, you heard what the boys said about Coldplay and what Chris said about BTS. If I'm absolutely positive about one thing, it's that BTS don't say things they don't mean. They may leave details out, or not say anything at all, of course, but they never, ever say things that they don't mean. Ever.

As an army and a coldplay fan for years, there’s no doubt in my mind that this collab was genuine and authentic. Tbh, this collab wasn’t needed and I say that in the sense that both bands are so well off, they didn’t need to collab but they did so because they both genuinely love each other as artists and they know it would bring people a lot of joy. The fact that Chris traveled all the way to South Korea when he didn’t need to at all, shows how much he wanted this. It’s the way he loves them and cares for them, so much that in the Global Citizen Live concert, he said “I can’t do this without them.” He loves BTS’ message, their philosophy in life and everything that they stand for, which in many ways, it’s the same way he views his life and his philosophy is very similar. When BTS covered Fix You, everyone knew Chris just doesn’t let anyone cover his songs unless he knows that they are trying to send a strong powerful message, let alone Fix You which is one of the most beautiful and meaningful songs to Coldplay. Some artists have taken advantage of BTS bc of their fans, one being Jason Derulo, but Coldplay, you can definitely tell they admire BTS for what they do and they really care for them, no doubt in my mind about that.

Tbh your reaction kinda irks me.... Like Chris is a huge artist and he went all the way to korea to do this, he learned their names and a bit of korean to communicate with them and he did the best bts interview ive seen since theyve become popular. As for bts, they dont do anything they dont 100% believe in and theyve been saying for years how much they admire and love coldplay. Most of the artists bts collabd with didnt even bother actually meeting them yet even learning their names.

For me, this collab feels like the most genuine and real collab BTS has ever done with any western artist. I get that while going through this whole My Universe experience.

I think this is more genuine than most collabs they did with other artists. When we look at past western artists like Nicki Minaj, Sia, Jason Derulo, Charlie XCX, Charlie Puth etc weren't as sincere. The fact that he was flew to korea and learnt to sing in Korean really shows how genuine it is. The way he was certain and planned out which line each member was going to sing in. It really shows he did his research on their voices and he knew which tone he wanted for each part. The fact that he understands the messages behind BTS songs shows he also put effort into looking at translations as well as acknowledge the unusual musical structure. While Kpop may not be for everyone, but it doesn't mean they should be disrespected and disregarded as artists.

You doubted their authenticity when you thought chris diss them at the global cetizen live, but actually chris did not. I am an Army for real.

I feel that this collab was indeed very authentic, BTS has "commercial" collabs and as you said there's NOTHING wrong with that, it's literally artists supporting each others career, win-win situations. One of those that I enjoyed a lot was the MeganXButter lately, it was more of a commercial collab, still I loved it and because of the collab they were able to met each other afterwards too... But this Coldplay one I feel like it was more genuine in the mindset that they wanted to create something together, and do it together...

@whatacuteTae Yeah, I never said that they didn't "needed" 😅 collabs are always beneficial for both artists (some more than others lol), but at the end of the day I still feel like it was very authentic, specially since BTS were the ones to reach out first ... Using my prior example for the Butter remix, Megan didn't needed the collab (or the clout), nor BTS, even so their collab felt more commercial than this Coldplay one... I guess is just about how they present the work to us...

@whatacuteTae Totally!! We just saw what they wanted to show us , but I'm aware of that 😅 Don't worry, I'm not those blind gullible fans... My opinion still stands tho...

Can I just say I love how respectful Justin is with not pausing the video too often or talking that much while the video is playing so the people who are watching for the first time can listen to both his reaction and the video. Love it!

7:27 SERIOUSLY? THEIR COLLABORATION WAS 100% GENUINE; there is NO room for questioning because you can see the RAW genuineness of it.

And I think that both sides really wanted this collab. Chris took the time to travel to Korea to meet them in person. He also hinted that he watched some of their earlier MVs. I have to say this is my all-time favorite BTS collab.

It really irritated me that you asked that question because both Chris and BTS really liked each other.
