i'm not gonna talk about how good this perfomance is, vocally, because that's already given. i'm just here to state my frustration on people calling her "overrated" when she does all of these crazy things. she's not just an entertainer nor just a vocalist, she's excellent at both. people who do so are either just haters or racists because there's no acceptable reason to see her as one lol

The racist part is not necessarily true, as Black people some of us also have said she can’t sing. I think maybe they caught her on a bad day with a lot of dancing OR it’s when the anointing is missing in the gospel songs. I especially remember when she sang on the Oscar’s from the movie Selma. She didn’t have the anointing Ledsi had on the song. There was a meme of Shirley Caesar & a few other gospel greats. It said “you sound good but baby where’s the oil”. It made the rounds of #BlackTwitter.

Yes, Beyoncé's growl is something she's clearly spent some time perfecting. Its among the healthiest sounding distortion I've ever heard. It's like a filter she can put on and take off at will to color her voice and she can do it for days. Honestly, I suspect at this point it is actually easier and more comfortable for her than belting straight tone or pulling her chest voice up on a phrase without it. I notice her inserting it more into her live performances on certain phrases or notes along her bridge when compared to the studio recorded vocal of the record.

Beyonce is supernaturally EPIC in her voice, she's worked her ass off for over a decade in mastering her craft and honing her voice in ways that is soooooo freaking remarkable and perfect. SHE can sing high, low and everything in between. But she practiced and did the work necessary to perfect her voice and her entire performance in a way that she can sing any genre of music at the drop of a hat. Beyonce does her research, homework and puts in the hours, hours, months, months, years and years of work to perfect her voice and performance. The only person that does this or was a masterful visionary musically is Micheal Jackson. Micheal's voice is and was perfect which made him ICONIC. Beyonce is ICONIC. Period!!!

14:32 Bey finds the lyrics for Gary. 20:01 Bey is just giving Ed some reassurance 22:29 Beyonce's voice has a strong natural vibrato I don't think she's adding it to the growl - I think she's unable to mask it while growling because distortion already takes so much active effort
