I discovered Lalah Hathaway when I was 15 years old. That was... Let's just say over 20 years ago. 🙃 My aunt was considering having me sing a Stevie Wonder song for a friend's wedding with her (You & I). I was having some trouble with a couple of parts of the song, so she had me listen to Hathaway's album, and told me if I can sing any one of this woman's songs I would be able to get the song I needed to sing for the wedding no problem. I wish I knew enough to tell her as a kid that it doesn't quite work that way lol. But, I did get the song eventually. 😄 I am glad to see a new generation discover the remarkably amazing talent that is Ms. Hathaway! How this woman never became as phenomenally well-known, world-renowned, and legend as her dad was is insane! She is among the likes of people like Billie Holliday, Aretha Franklin, Bill Medley, Linda Ronstadt, Nat King Cole, and so many others when it comes to the sheer phenomenal talent and ability that she possesses.

The very first "lick" she sings is a quote from EWF's live version of the classic song REASONS. (0:37) It's not trivial. I'm sure everyone in the audience got it. For some of us it touches a soulful nerve. I assure you that she can scat the whole solo verbatim. It's a classic interplay between Phillip Bailey and Saxophonist Son Myrick.

@LesageSinging Here is what I learned about the vocal note she does: 1) Polyphonic splitting (where your folds produce several independent fundamental pitches at once, this is achieved by either applying a certain tension on the folds so there are two or more partial vibrations at the same time or pushing "too much" into a breathy sound) --> there is several different splitting techniques, 1) the Lalah Hathaway breathy falsetto technique, 2) the Phil Minton grandpa voice technique and 3) the Eric Adams whistle scream technique. Or subharmonic distortion.

I appreciate the notes rere. The beatboxing community online has done some really impressive work distilling how to learn this technique, but no one has contributed thoughts behind the anatomical mechanics of the sound. Definitely good food for thought.

Look up Gospel Artist Keith Pringle. He naturally sings 2 notes at once. I sung with him once in highschool workshop in the late 80s.

You should listen to her father sing. Donny Hathaway. A song for you is… it is a spiritual experience… and I also would recommend “we need you right now” he was a talent that doesn’t get his just desserts.

Apologies if someone has already posted the term. The double note singing may be what's called: Polyphonic/Overtone Singing.
